Book Something on my Mind

Download or read book Something on my Mind written by Sharon Sorour-Morris and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2010-12-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kate Jowell was the director of the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business - the first woman to hold such office in South Africa - when, at the age of 59, she was diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s disease. Attractive, glamorous and hard-working, she had, up till then, been a brilliant thinker whose high-profile career included being one of the first editors of women’s magazine Fair Lady, and establishing herself as a labour specialist at the height of industrial unrest in the 1980s, when she became a pioneering consultant and a highly regarded business academic. Sharon Sorour-Morris met Kate Jowell at the end of 2002 and spent the following year working closely with her, recording her devastating mental decline and capturing the memories of those who were closely involved in her life. Kate’s poignant story reveals the havoc this insidious disease wreaks not only on the sufferer’s life, but also on family, friends, colleagues and caregivers. It also recounts a fascinating social history, as Kate’s life crossed that of many well-known personalities: Albie Sachs, Jenny le Roux, Gorry Bowes Taylor, Sydney Baker, Sue MacGregor, former President FW de Klerk, Denis Worrall, George Ellis and Mamphela Ramphele, among others, as well as interesting international academics such as Robert Rotberg. While Kate’s story is a tragic one, it is not without inspiration and hope: an account of a remarkable woman who lived her life with optimism and who faced the prospect of losing her mind with extraordinary dignity and courage. This is her true legacy.

Book In the Company of Diamonds

Download or read book In the Company of Diamonds written by Peter Carstens and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the 1925 discovery of diamonds in the semi-desert of the northwest coast of South Africa, De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. virtually proclaimed its dominion over the whole region. In the town of Kleinzee, the company owns all the real estate and infrastructure, and controls and administers both the town and the industry. Peter Carstens's In the Company of Diamonds draws a stark and startling portrait of this closed community, one that analyzes the power and hegemonic techniques used to acquire that power and maintain it. As a prototypical company town, Kleinzee is subordinated to the industry and will of the owners. Employees and workers are variously differentiated and ordered according to occupation, ethnic variation, and other social criteria, a pattern reflected most markedly in the allocation of housing. Managers live in large, ranch-style houses, while contract workers are lodged in single-sex compounds. As a community type, company towns like Kleinzee are not entirely unique, and Professor Carstens successfully draws a number of structural parallels with other closed and incomplete social formations such as Indian reservations, military bases, colleges, prisons, and mental hospitals.

Book Into Kokerboom Country

Download or read book Into Kokerboom Country written by Phyllis Jowell and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into Kokerboom Country tells the story, with many fascinating historical photographs previously unpublished, of the Jewish pioneers who, like the kokerboom, dug their roots into the sandy soil of Namaqualand. They transformed their situation from penniless immigrants to established citizens and in the process left 'diep spore' in this remote and isolated region of South Africa. It is a chronicle about a small group of immigrants who sought freedom and economic opportunity in a remote and arid corner of South Africa. Their determination to succeed in carving out a life for themselves and their families is described in a history spanning 120 years, from the mid-1850s to the late 1970s. The Namaqualand Jewish story epitomises the trials, triumphs, challenges and joys of so many Jewish communities throughout the country, and indeed the world. It celebrates the rich cultural history and moral substance of these early pioneers, who remained committed to their Jewish traditions under extremely difficult circumstances. With evocative photographs, original research and colourful memoirs, this is an extraordinary account of courage, fortitude and acculturation.
