A place where cooking food is considered an art form, one can only imagine what a lip-smacking treat is awaiting a man in love with authentic food. Jodhpur is one such city that offers sumptuous and simply irresistible delicacies, leaving you asking for more. Of all the cuisines in the world, this one is one of the most aromatic and colorful, one that has evolved from the kitchens of the Marwar kingdom, which was renowned for age-old traditions of hospitality and food. The city’s cultural tapestry takes in simple folk to highly cultivated classical music and dance, in its own distinct style. Not everyone gets invited to the kitchen of the Royal family of Jodhpur to see how their food is custom made. Book excerpt: Only two months to freedom. A jigsaw of around 565* princely states. At the stroke of midnight on 15 August 1947, India could emerge as a united nation. Or disintegrate into several pieces. On 3 June 1947, Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy of India, makes a historic announcement. After two centuries of being a colony, India would finally become an independent nation on 15 August 1947. Yet there is no India as we know it today, only a patchwork of territories forming British India, and kingdoms ruled by maharajas and nawabs who had pledged their allegiance to the British Crown. The rulers are given three choices: accede to India, join Pakistan, or remain free. While many of the nearly 600 rulers unite with India, some with larger kingdoms decide to either wait for a better bargain, negotiate terms for joining Pakistan, or use the opportunity to give flight to their lofty ambitions. As the sun is poised to set on the British Empire, the future of India hangs in the balance. What unfolds in those nerve-racking last days of the Raj? In a gripping account, highlighting the key events and personalities of the time, this thoroughly researched book introduces young adults and older readers to the dramatic saga of how a great nation was forged. *For why 565, see page i

Book MORE JOURNEYS OF A LIFETIME

Download or read book MORE JOURNEYS OF A LIFETIME written by Len Coates and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I wrote my first book, Journeys of a Lifetime, in 2004, it reflected how dreams of mine, of visiting unknown places in the United Kingdom, countries across the North Sea in Europe, and seemingly far off continents of America, Africa, Asia, and Australia became reality. That was mainly due to the advent of air travel, package holidays, and the massive growth of international travel in the second half of the twentieth century. Nine years on from that book, my traveling has continued, and in that time, having seen the arrival of grandchildren, naturally they have joined in some of the journeys. Although places visited in that time include some return trips to old favorites, this book reflects only the new places visited. In particular India, the Middle East, the Far East, and nearer home Eastern Europe, all are featured more this time. Also, as we now have an Aussie part of the family, naturally Australia is also a regular destination. Although the United Kingdom is much smaller in area than the others, it is packed with wonderful places to visit, so trips at home are still often on the itinerary. In addition, cruising has taken off in the last decade a bit like package deals to Europe did in the 1960s and has added a new dimension to the journeys made. Cruises are featured several times in this book. More Journeys of a Lifetime reflects the further growth in long-haul travel and the massive increase of cruising. Hope you enjoy my further travels around this small world of ours, going on from those early dreams of mine and continuing to do so!

Book Ghost Train to the Eastern Star

Download or read book Ghost Train to the Eastern Star written by Paul Theroux and published by Emblem Editions. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Bestseller In Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, Theroux recreates an epic journey he took thirty years ago, a giant loop by train (mostly) through Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, China, Japan, and Siberia. In short, he traverses all of Asia top to bottom, and end to end. In the three decades since he first travelled this route, Asia has undergone phenomenal change. The Soviet Union has collapsed, China has risen, India booms, Burma slowly smothers, and Vietnam prospers despite the havoc unleashed upon it the last time Theroux passed through. He witnesses all this and more in a 25,000 mile journey, travelling as the locals do, by train, car, bus, and foot. His odyssey takes him from Eastern Europe, still hungover from Communism, through tense but thriving Turkey, into the Caucasus, where Georgia limps back toward feudalism while its neighbour Azerbaijan revels in oil-driven capitalism. As he penetrates deeper into Asia’s heart, his encounters take on an otherworldly cast. The two chapters that follow show us Turkmenistan, a profoundly isolated society at the mercy of an almost comically egotistical dictator, and Uzbekistan, a ruthless authoritarian state. From there, he retraces his steps through India, Mayanmar, China, and Japan, providing his penetrating observations on the changes these countries have undergone. Brilliant, caustic, and totally addictive, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star is Theroux at his very best.
