Book Survival Strategies

Download or read book Survival Strategies written by George G. Wynne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published 1979, this is a most unusual contribution to comparative urban systems. It examines Paris and New York in terms of future prospects for each city in the face of draconian social, economic, and political changes, and takes as axiomatic that the struggles of New York and Paris are those of super cities: namely struggles to survive as world centers and not just as national metropolitan areas of worth. The volume covers such vital areas as planning for older cities like Paris and New York, problems in the internal management system of each city, the relationship between inner cities and suburbs, and issues involved in regional planning in which the two world cities provide models for their nations and the world as a whole. The work is unusual in that it not only appraises organizational issues, but sociological and architectural ones as well. Hence, the issue of blacks in New York, or Arabs in Paris, is addressed with considerable candor and insight. The relationship between substandard housing in each of the cities is examined with the clear understanding of the racial dynamics at work in each of these centers. This work gives intellectual and practical substance to Gottman's notion of megalopolis, and places in sharp comparative relief problems which all too often are seen as local and parochial in character. This volume represents the first world-cities approach to real world cities, and as such, is a pioneering effort that will be greeted with great enthusiasm by scholarly and general readers alike. The authors gathered for this effort represent leading practitioners from both France and the United States, and hence the volume is a joy to read no less than to ponder.

Book Strategies for Survival

Download or read book Strategies for Survival written by William Dusinberre and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategies for Survival conveys the experience of bondage through former enslaved people's own words. The source of this landmark content is a remarkable series of interviews conducted in Virginia in 1937 by WPA workers. Most of the interviewers were themselves Black; as a result, the subjects spoke with exceptional candor. William Dusinberre explores these interviews to re-create for the modern reader enslaved people's strategies for survival within the severe constrictions bondage imposed upon their lives. Religion and escape were the chief ways of coping with the indignity of family disruption, contempt, and the harsh realities of slavery. We see great creativity and variety in such responses to oppression, but we are forced to acknowledge the dispiriting realties of enslaved existence and the limits of enslaved people's resistance and agency.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Octavia Butler, here is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help to shape the futures we want. Change is constant. The world, our bodies, and our minds are in a constant state of flux. They are a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, Emergent Strategy teaches us to map and assess the swirling structures and to read them as they happen, all the better to shape that which ultimately shapes us, personally and politically. A resolutely materialist spirituality based equally on science and science fiction: a wild feminist and afro-futurist ride! adrienne maree brown, co-editor of Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements, is a social justice facilitator, healer, and doula living in Detroit.

Download or read book Beyond Survival written by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformative justice seeks to solve the problem of violence at the grassroots level, without relying on punishment, incarceration, or policing. Community-based approaches to preventing crime and repairing its damage have existed for centuries. However, in the putative atmosphere of contemporary criminal justice systems, they are often marginalized and operate under the radar. Beyond Survival puts these strategies front and center as real alternatives to today’s failed models of confinement and “correction.” In this collection, a diverse group of authors focuses on concrete and practical forms of redress and accountability, assessing existing practices and marking paths forward. They use a variety of forms—from toolkits to personal essays—to delve deeply into the “how to” of transformative justice, providing alternatives to calling the police, ways to support people having mental health crises, stories of community-based murder investigations, and much more. At the same time, they document the history of this radical movement, creating space for long-time organizers to reflect on victories, struggles, mistakes, and transformations.

Book The Working Woman s Legal Survival Guide

Download or read book The Working Woman s Legal Survival Guide written by Steven Mitchell Sack and published by Legal Strategies. This book was released on 1997-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women have special needs and job concerns. This book was written to save you money and aggravation". In the course of writing 14 other legal books, mostly dealing with labor subjects, it became clear to Steven Mitchell Sack that many workers are unable to obtain valuable legal advice and strategies at a low cost. The desire to provide such information for the people who need it most prompted him to write this practical, easy-to-follow guide for working women. Female workers enjoy a unique status in the eyes of the law. As a protected class, you cannot be discriminated against on the basis of your sex, or harassed on the job. Unfortunately, many women are not aware of their rights and how to use them effectively. This book was written to give them the edge. The author addresses specific job issues that pertain primarily and sometimes exclusively to women. It contains practical strategies in areas where women are commonly misinformed or exploited, including pregnancy, child care, discrimination, sex harassment, equal pay and overtime issues, part-time positions, and problems affecting consultants and independent contractors. The text is easy to read and includes checklists, sample letters, plus actual agreements and documents used by employment lawyers. It also contains lists of agencies, groups, and organizations to contact for additional assistance. The glossary will help you understand important legal terms and concepts.

Book The Routledge Handbook of International Critical Social Work

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of International Critical Social Work written by Stephen A. Webb and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of International Critical Social Work is a companion volume to the Routledge Handbook of Critical Social Work. It brings together world-leading scholars in the field to provide additional, in-depth and provocative consideration of alternative and progressive ways of thinking about social work. Critical social work is increasingly involved in a global conversation, and as a subfield of social work it is rapidly becoming an interdisciplinary field in its own right and promoting novel forms of political activism. The Handbook showcases the global influences and path-breaking ideas of critical social work and examines the different stances taken on important political and ethical issues. It provides the first complete survey of the vibrant field of critical social work in a rich international context. This definitive volume is one of the most comprehensive source books on crucial social work that is available on the international stage and an essential guide for anyone interested in the politics of social work. The Handbook is divided into sever sections • Thinking the Political • Politics and the Ruins of Neoliberalism • Negotiating the State: Resistance, Protest and Dissent • Race, Bordering Practices and Migrants • Post Colonialism, Subaltern and the Global South • Critical Feminism, Sexuality and Gender Politics • Posthumanism, Pandemics and Environment The Handbook is comprised of 46 newly written chapters (and one reprint) which concentrate on differences between European and American contributions in this field as well as explicitly identifying the significance of critical social work in the context of Latin America. It provides a further vital trajectory of intellectual practice theory via interdisciplinary discussion of areas such as biopolitics, critical race theory, boundaries of gender and sexuality, queer studies, new conceptions of community, issues of public engagement, racism and Roma people, ecological feminism, environmental humanities and critical animal studies. The Handbook is an innovative and authoritative guide to theory and method as they relate to policy issues and practice and focus on the primary debates of today in social work from a critical perspective, and will be required reading for all students, academics and practitioners of social work and related professions.
