Download or read book Between Art and Anthropology written by Arnd Schneider and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Art and Anthropology provides new and challenging arguments for considering contemporary art and anthropology in terms of fieldwork practice. Artists and anthropologists share a set of common practices that raise similar ethical issues, which the authors explore in depth for the first time. The book presents a strong argument for encouraging artists and anthropologists to learn directly from each other's practices 'in the field'. It goes beyond the so-called 'ethnographic turn' of much contemporary art and the 'crisis of representation' in anthropology, in productively exploring the implications of the new anthropology of the senses, and ethical issues, for future art-anthropology collaborations. The contributors to this exciting volume consider the work of artists such as Joseph Beuys, Suzanne Lacy, Marcus Coates, Cameron Jamie, and Mohini Chandra. With cutting-edge essays from a range of key thinkers such as acclaimed art critic Lucy R. Lippard, and distinguished anthropologists George E. Marcus and Steve Feld, Between Art and Anthropology will be essential reading for students, artists and scholars across a number of fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thought-provoking essays brought together in Engaging Affects, Thinking Feelings: Social, Political and Artistic Practices balance critical thinking with creative opportunities to imagine new possibilities. With an international breadth that crosses continents and an interdisciplinary orientation that connects diverse scholarly fields, this collection is ambitious in its scope. At the same time, the essays focus on the small details, embodied traces, and intimate spaces of experience often overlooked or devalued within dominant discourses. Exploring diverse issues and methodologies, the contributions here share a willingness to pay close attention to vulnerable subjects that challenge readers to think beyond the rational and binary limits of academic knowledge. As such, the authors simultaneously engage readers’ intellects and emotions as they write passionately about subjects ranging from war, food, sexuality, geography, social media, poetry, photography, and philosophy. The result is a text that offers diverse ways of mobilizing an array of affect theories in relation to specific sites of interpretation, activism, and creativity.
Download or read book The Ethics of Photojournalism in the Digital Age written by Miguel Franquet Santos Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delving into the complexities of contemporary reportage, this book draws from moral philosophy and histories of photojournalism to understand the emergence of this distinct practice and discuss its evolution in a digital era. In arguing that the digitization of photography obliges us to radically challenge some of the traditional conceptions of press photography, this book addresses the historic opposition between artistic and journalistic photographs, showing and challenging how this has subtly inspired support for a forensic approach to photojournalism ethics. The book situates this debate within questions of relativism over what is ‘moral’, and normative debates over what is ‘journalistic’, alongside technical debates as to what is ‘possible’, to underpin a discussion of photojournalism as an ethical, moral, and societally important journalistic practice. Including detailed comparative analyses of codes of ethics, examination of controversial cases, and a study of photojournalism ethics as applied in different newsrooms, the book examines how ethical principles are applied by the global news media and explores the potential for constructive dialogue between different voices interested in pursuing the best version of photojournalism. A targeted, comprehensive and engaging book, this is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and students of photojournalism, as well as philosophy, communications and media studies more broadly.
Download or read book The Exform written by Nicolas Bourriaud and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of the influential Relational Aesthetics examines the dynamics of ideology Leading theorist and art curator Nicolas Bourriaud tackles the excluded, the disposable and the nature of waste by looking to the future of art—the exform. He argues that the great theoretical battles to come will be fought in the realms of ideology, psychoanalysis and art. A “realist” theory and practice must begin by uncovering the mechanisms that create the distinctions between the productive and unproductive, product and waste, and the included and excluded. To do this we must go back to the towering theorist of ideology Louis Althusser and examine how ideology conditions political discourse in ways that normalize cultural, racial and economic practices of exclusion.

Download or read book Torre David written by Urban-Think Tank (Firm) and published by Lars Muller Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torre David, a 45-story skyscraper in Caracas, has remained uncompleted since the Venezuelan economy collapsed in 1994. Today, it is the improvised home to more than 750 families living in an extra-legal and tenuous squat, that some have called a "vertical slum." Urban-Think Tank, the authors of TORRE DAVID: INFORMAL VERTICAL COMMUNITIES, spent a year studying the physical and social organization of this ruin-become home. Richly illustrated with photographs by Iwan Baan, the book documents the residents' occupation of the tower and how, in the absence of formal infrastructure, they organize themselves to provide for daily needs, with a hair salon, a gym, grocery shops, and more. The authors of this thought-provoking work investigate informal vertical communities and the architecture that supports them and issue a call for action: to see in informal settlements a potential for innovation and experimentation, with the goal of putting design in service to a more equitable and sustainable future. Download or read book Exile and Cultural Hegemony written by Sebastiaan Faber and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Francisco Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War, a great many of the country's intellectuals went into exile in Mexico. During the three and a half decades of Francoist dictatorship, these exiles held that the Republic, not Francoism, represented the authentic culture of Spain. In this environment, as Sebastiaan Faber argues in Exile and Cultural Hegemony, the Spaniards' conception of their role as intellectuals changed markedly over time. The first study of its kind to place the exiles' ideological evolution in a broad historical context, Exile and Cultural Hegemony takes into account developments in both Spanish and Mexican politics from the early 1930s through the 1970s. Faber pays particular attention to the intellectuals' persistent nationalism and misplaced illusions of pan-Hispanist grandeur, which included awkward and ironic overlaps with the rhetoric employed by their enemies on the Francoist right. This embrace of nationalism, together with the intellectuals' dependence on the increasingly authoritarian Mexican regime and the international climate of the Cold War, eventually caused them to abandon the Gramscian ideal of the intellectual as political activist in favor of a more liberal, apolitical stance preferred by, among others, the Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset. With its comprehensive approach to topics integral to Spanish culture, both students of and those with a general interest in twentieth-century Spanish literature, history, or culture will find Exile and Cultural Hegemony a fascinating and groundbreaking work.
Download or read book Imatge devoci i identitat a l poca moderna written by Sílvia Canalda and published by Edicions Universitat Barcelona. This book was released on 2014-08-31 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
