Download or read book Ad vivum written by Thomas Balfe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term ad vivum and its cognates al vivo, au vif, nach dem Leben and naer het leven have been applied since the thirteenth century to depictions designated as from, to or after (the) life. This book explores the issues raised by this vocabulary and related terminology with reference to visual materials produced and used in Europe before 1800, including portraiture, botanical, zoological, medical and topographical images, images of novel and newly discovered phenomena, and likenesses created through direct contact with the object being depicted. The designation ad vivum was not restricted to depictions made directly after the living model, and was often used to advertise the claim of an image to be a faithful likeness or a bearer of reliable information. Viewed as an assertion of accuracy or truth, ad vivum raises a number of fundamental questions in the area of early modern epistemology – questions about the value and prestige of visual and/or physical contiguity between image and original, about the kinds of information which were thought important and dependably transmissible in material form, and about the roles of the artist in that transmission. The recent interest of historians of early modern art in how value and meaning are produced and reproduced by visual materials which do not conform to the definition of art as unique invention, and of historians of science and of art in the visualisation of knowledge, has placed the questions surrounding ad vivum at the centre of their common concerns. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late medieval and early modern Europe, textual and visual records of disaster and mass death allow us to encounter the intense emotions generated through the religious, providential and apocalyptic frameworks that provided these events with meaning. This collection brings together historians, art historians, and literary specialists in a cross-disciplinary collection shaped by new developments in the history of emotions. It offers a rich range of analytical frameworks and case studies, from the emotional language of divine providence to individual and communal experiences of disaster. Geographically wide-ranging, the collection also analyses many different sorts of media: from letters and diaries to broadsheets and paintings. Through these and other historical records, the contributors examine how communities and individuals experienced, responded to, recorded and managed the emotional dynamics and trauma created by dramatic events like massacres, floods, fires, earthquakes and plagues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated in literature and Hollywood movies, the lives of the Ancient Egyptian queens have become synonymous with power, beauty, and glory. Cleopatra, Nefertiti, Nefertari and Hatchepsut are as well known today as they were in life. As the wives, mothers, or daughters of pharaohs, their influence on three thousand years of ancient Egyptian history is indisputable. This book offers a unique and heretofore unexplored insight into the key role they played and unveils the true nature of their political and spiritual influence, which was very different from the cliched portrayals most readers are familiar with. Some of the questions answered in this book include: What was the real status of the Egyptian queens? What was the status of second wives and concubines? What was their role in religious celebrations? What was their beauty regime?
