During recuperation, he found he had the ability to learn to play various musical instruments, and with his vocal ability, he was able to perform like a professional. He eventually reintegrated into as normal a life as possible. Along the way, he found the joys of love and the depths of extreme sadness. After leaving the military, he searched new locations for a place he could live in and found happiness—his private paradise. He found it and lost it a few times, but his music was always there to help him through the sad times. It also proved to be very entertaining to others, especially young women, and as a bonus, it was very profitable. He even learned to speak a foreign language. He made friends wherever he went. Some were very solid, long-lasting friendships, and others were very shallow and fleeting. Many people said he was the nicest man you would ever know. In the end, will there be a happy ever after?

Book Bleating in Southern California

Download or read book Bleating in Southern California written by Yingtien A. Shih and published by Andy Shih. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As R. W. Emerson says, by necessity, by proclivity, and by delight, we all quote. As B. Disraeli says, the wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated by quotations. Confucius and Lao-tzu are famous philosophers in ancient China, who still have a great influence over modern Chinese. Besides, many Chinese proverbs and idioms also keep swaying modern Chinese. A lot of Western proverbs and quotations also make a dent in modern Chinese. One of the main purposes of my book is to promote the understanding between the East and the West. My book consists of hundreds Chinese and Western quotations and proverbs, which are witty, inspirational, self-improving, or humorous. As the Talmud says, a quotation at the right moment is like bread to the famished. G. B. Shaw says, " I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversation." As R. W. Emerson says, conversation is an art in which a man has all mankind for competitors. Pierre de Beaumarchais says, " It isn't necessary to understand things in order to argue about them. Everyone has got a right to say or do whatever he or she prefers, which could honor or humiliate him or her, you know. Life is changeable. Don't grieve for the past. Learn from the past and improve. Don't fear the future. Challenging the present problems, you'll have a sweet memory and make a better prepara- tion for the future. My book also shows the pronunciations of pinyin Chinese. The complete title of my book is " A WINTER-BORN SHEEP BLEATING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA" because I was born in 1943, named "yang2 nian2" meaning the "year of sheep" according to Chinese zodiac. In Southern California, a remarkably multicultural area where I've lived for more than 30 years, the grass flourishes in rainy winter. As F. Allen says, California is a fine place to live in--if you happen to be an orange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the two billion YouTube views for “Gangnam Style” would indicate, South Korean popular culture has begun to enjoy new prominence on the global stage. Yet, as this timely new study reveals, the nation’s film industry has long been a hub for transnational exchange, producing movies that put a unique spin on familiar genres, while influencing world cinema from Hollywood to Bollywood. Movie Migrations is not only an introduction to one of the world’s most vibrant national cinemas, but also a provocative call to reimagine the very concepts of “national cinemas” and “film genre.” Challenging traditional critical assumptions that place Hollywood at the center of genre production, Hye Seung Chung and David Scott Diffrient bring South Korean cinema to the forefront of recent and ongoing debates about globalization and transnationalism. In each chapter they track a different way that South Korean filmmakers have adapted material from foreign sources, resulting in everything from the Manchurian Western to The Host’s reinvention of the Godzilla mythos. Spanning a wide range of genres, the book introduces readers to classics from the 1950s and 1960s Golden Age of South Korean cinema, while offering fresh perspectives on recent favorites like Oldboy and Thirst. Perfect not only for fans of Korean film, but for anyone curious about media in an era of globalization, Movie Migrations will give readers a new appreciation for the creative act of cross-cultural adaptation.

Book Studies on Graphene Based Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications

Download or read book Studies on Graphene Based Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications written by Je Min Yoo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents various applications of graphene-based nanomaterials, especially in biomedicine. Graphene and its derivatives have gained enormous attention from scientists in all fields of study due to many unprecedented properties. The initial scientific attention was focused on the development of transparent flexible electrodes by exploiting two-dimensional graphene film’s extraordinary electrical and physical properties. Recently, given an increasing evidence of dispersed graphene-based nanomaterials’ biocompatibility, researchers have endeavored to employ these materials in other studies relevant to biomedical technologies. In this respect, the thesis provides a comprehensive review on the synthesis, toxicity, and a few of the key biomedical applications in the first chapter. The following chapter discusses the use of a graphene film as a novel catalyst to oxidatively destroy phenols, which are known to be potentially mutagenic and carcinogenic. Finally, and most importantly, the last chapter introduces the therapeutic role of graphene quantum dots, the smallest graphene-based nanomaterials, for Parkinson’s disease. The results are promising for the use of graphene quantum dots as the basis of future clinical drug candidates for neurodegenerative disorders.

Book Pathetic Literature

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eileen Myles
  • Publisher : Grove Press
  • Release : 2022-11-15
  • ISBN : 0802157173
  • Pages : 595 pages

Download or read book Pathetic Literature written by Eileen Myles and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An utterly unique collection composed by the award-winning poet and writer, a global anthology of pieces from lesser-known classics by luminaries like Franz Kafka, Samuel R. Delany, and Gwendolyn Brooks to up-and-coming writers that examine pathos and feeling, giving a well-timed rehab to the word “pathetic” “Literature is pathetic.” So claims Eileen Myles in their provocative and robust introduction to Pathetic Literature, a breathtaking mishmash of pieces ranging from poems to theater scripts to prose to anything in between, all exploring the so-called “pathetic” or awkwardly-felt moments and revelations around which lives are both built and undone. Myles first reclaimed the word for a seminar they taught at the University of California San Diego in the early 2000s, rescuing it from the derision into which it had slipped and restoring its original meaning of inspiring emotion or feeling, from the Ancient Greek rhetorical method pathos. Their identification of “pathetic” as ripe for reinvention forms the need for this anthology, which includes a hearty 106 contributors, encompassing canonical global stars like Robert Walser, Jorge Luis Borges, Rumi, and Gwendolyn Brooks, literary libertines like Dodie Bellamy, Samuel R. Delany, and Bob Flanagan, as well as extraordinary writers on the rise, including Nicole Wallace, Precious Okoyomon, and Will Farris. Wrenching and discomfiting prose by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, Jack Halberstam, and Porochista Khakpour rubs shoulders with poems by Natalie Diaz, Victoria Chang, Lucille Clifton, and Ariana Reines, and butts up against fiction from Chester Himes, Djuna Barnes, Chris Kraus, and Qiu Miaojin, among so many others, including Myles’s own opening salvo of their 1992 presidential campaign. The result is a completely anomalous and uplifting anthology that encourages a fresh political discourse on literature, as well as supplying an essential compendium of pained, awkward, queer, trans, gleeful, and ever-jarring ways to think differently and live pathetically on a polarized and fearful planet.
