Book excerpt: A deeply moving recasting of one of the most controversial characters in American literature, Huckleberry Finn’s Jim Written in the great literary tradition of novels of American slavery, My Jim is told in the incantatory voice of Sadie Watson, an ex-slave who schools her granddaughter with lessons of love she learned in bondage. To help her granddaughter confront the decisions she needs to make, Sadie mines her memory for the tale of the unquenchable love of her life, Jim. Sadie’s Jim was an ambitious young slave and seer who, when faced with the prospect of being sold, escaped down the Mississippi with a white boy named Huck. Sadie is suddenly left alone. Worried about her children, convinced her husband is dead, reviled as a witch, and punished for Jim’s escape, Sadie’s will and her love for Jim, even in absentia, animate her life and see her through. Told with spare eloquence and mirroring the true stories of countless slave women, My Jim re-creates one of the most controversial characters in American literature. A nuanced critique of the great American novel, My Jim stands on its own as a haunting and inspiring story about freedom, longing, and the remarkable endurance of love.

Book excerpt: The author’s parents, James Eulis Creasy and Nancy Hemington, grew up in two very different cultures, but they were both from hardworking, loving, and humble families, sharing a common religion, with teetotalers as matriarchs. The two families were brought together by the greatest cataclysm in history, World War II, and eventually by the love between one family’s oldest child and the other family’s youngest. The Creasys from Alabama had nine children, six boys and three girls. The Hemingtons from Hampshire, England had four children, two sons and two daughters. Both of the English brothers and three of the American brothers served in the military. As the odds would have it, one of the five was killed in action. Ironically, the two English sisters faced considerable risk of death or injury by simply being inhabitants of a community located near the German’s plum target of Southampton, England. Herein lie their stories.

Book excerpt: Kidding Around with the King of Comedy Jim Carrey is used to being laughed at. In fact, he thrives on entertaining others. As a precocious young boy, he practiced pulling faces in the bathroom mirror -- a talent that would later prove to be instrumental in his success -- and performed self-created skits for his family. Unfortunately, his life wasn't one smooth cruise to the top. The Canadian-born funnyman's rags-to-riches tale is the stuff dreams are made of. Since his early smash hit Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the blockbuster movie roles just keep on coming. But Carrey isn't content simply to play it safe and stick with the slapstick comedy roles he knows and performs so confidently. In fact, with releases such as The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, Carrey has challenged himself creatively and shown audiences that he is capable of demonstrating sensitivity and immense dramatic range. With his latest hit move, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, this shooting star's future just keeps getting brighter!

Book excerpt: It's time to look seriously at child's play. In 2017, award-winning author-photographer Nancy Farese visited Bangladesh to photograph the Rohingya refugee crisis, and she saw firsthand the toll of extreme trauma and the most violent tendencies of humankind. She also saw, everywhere, on the edge of every frame, children at play, following their instinctual drive to adapt, socialize, and heal, in defiance of the darker forces all around them. This documentary photography book by Farese focuses on child's play in fourteen countries. Play is where we learn creativity, collaboration, and the emotional flexibility to survive in a chaotic and ambiguous world. She invites us to consider how this universal activity-and the concept of "free play" as a self-motivated and joyful exploration-is threatened by the unrelenting forces of technology, consumerism, and even overparenting.Potential Space offers a global view of a mundane activity that powerfully shapes who we are both as individuals, and as a society. Play is also where we lose ourselves in time yet find ourselves most fully alive. However, in our modern world free play is under threat, redefined by the converging forces of technology, consumerism, and even overparenting. Farese looks at children's play through a wide lens, providing a look within, and beyond, the challenges of our time toward a more hopeful and resilient perspective. We know it when we see it, anywhere in the world; the beauty of play is that it becomes both a window and a mirror, providing an opening for empathy, and peace.

Book Morality Mortality

    Book Details:
  • Author : F. M. Kamm
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1998-05-07
  • ISBN : 0198024010
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Morality Mortality written by F. M. Kamm and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-05-07 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is death bad for us, even on the assumption that it involves the absence of experience? Is it worse for us than prenatal nonexistence? Kamm begins by considering these questions, critically examining some answers other philosophers have given. She explores in detail suggestions based on our greater concern over the loss of future versus past goods and those based on the insult to persons which death involves. In the second part, Kamm deals with the question, "Whom should we save from death if we cannot save everyone?" She considers whether and when the numbers of lives we can save matter in our choice, and whether the extra good we achieve if we save some lives rather than others should play a role in deciding whom to save. Issues such as fairness, solidarity, the role of random decision procedures, and the relation between subjective and objective points of view are discussed, with an eye to properly incorporating these into a nonconsequentialist ethical theory. In conclusion, the book examines specifically what differences between persons are relevant to the distribution of any scarce resource, discussing for example, the distribution (and acquisition) of bodily organs for transplantation. Kamm provides criticism of some current procedures for distribution and acquisition of a scarce resource and makes suggestions for alternatives.
