Book excerpt: Knowing why you were created is as important to you as breathing. Do you know that God sent you to this earth equipped with a specific purpose? Just imagine how exhilarating it would be to wake up every morning cognizant of the "why" of your creation. For most of us, purpose is birthed out of an uncomfortable place. Those places comprise our experiences, fears and situational circumstances that mask our ability to hear the voice of God. Who Me? Are You Calling Me? portrays some of the Bible greats and how their lives parallel with ours. It outlines the stages of the call and how they processed through them to ultimately allow themselves to be thrust into their God ordained purpose.

Book The Site of the Social

    Book Details:
  • Author : Theodore R. Schatzki
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2002-01-01
  • ISBN : 0271023716
  • Pages : 319 pages

Download or read book The Site of the Social written by Theodore R. Schatzki and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by Heidegger’s concept of the clearing of being, and by Wittgenstein’s ideas on human practice, Theodore Schatzki offers a novel approach to understanding the constitution and transformation of social life. Key to the account he develops here is the context in which social life unfolds—the "site of the social"—as a contingent and constantly metamorphosing mesh of practices and material orders. Schatzki’s analysis reveals the advantages of this site ontology over the traditional individualist, holistic, and structuralist accounts that have dominated social theory since the mid-nineteenth century. A special feature of the book is its development of the theoretical argument by sustained reference to two historical examples: the medicinal herb business of a Shaker village in the 1850s and contemporary day trading on the Nasdaq market. First focusing on the relative simplicity of Shaker life to illuminate basic ontological characteristics of the social site, Schatzki then uses the sharp contrast with the complex and dynamic practice of day trading to reveal what makes this approach useful as a general account of social existence. Along the way he provides new insights into many major issues in social theory, including the nature of social order, the significance of agency, the distinction between society and nature, the forms of social change, and how the social present affects its future.

Book excerpt: The Flower Lover follows Richard Garcia as he looks into the disappearance of a rare, cultivated, orchid. Garcia's queries lead him to uncover a clandestine group that is selling weapons illegally. Thematically, The Flower Lover covers the tacit approval of government and duplicity of multinational corporations in destabilizing third world nations. There is a desire within us all to be heroic. We say we must be valiant but shirk the responsibility before the magnitude of the task. Not Richard Garcia. He has foibles, but idealism drives him to ferret out corruption. The Flower Lover has a complex, convoluted plot, and is fast-paced and cinematic. It keeps readers excited and turning pages all the way to the end.
