Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Witnesses That Jesus Is the Christ Indeed, to be truly consistent, we should give no instruction at all; since all instruction, in so far as it is received, gives a decided bias to the mind. If a man believes his religion to be true, it is the thing of all others which he is bound to enforce on the mind of his pupil; if he does not believe the religion he professes to be true, then, certainly, he had better leave religious instruction to be communicated by some one else. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Witnesses That Jesus Is the Christ It has been a common complaint of infidels, and opposers of the truth as it is in Jesus, that men have never been left unbiassed in the matter of religion; that parents and teachers have always been urgent to enforce their own dogmas on the youthful mind; and that thus men grow up disposed to retain and defend these dogmas, instead of dispassionately examining them, in order to ascertain their truth or falsehood. But if this objection were sustained, it would be inconsistent to confine it to religion; on the same principle we ought not to bias the opinions of a youth in regard to matters moral, economical, or political; but leave him, on all such subjects, to form his axioms and code of laws after his own fashion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Trial of the Witnesses, or the Resurrection of Jesus: Considered, on Principles Understood and Acknowledged Equally by Jews and Christians However, not to insist upon these minute differences, as it is of little importance for us to enquire from what partien lar spot Jesus ascended into heaven, provided the fact be proved by a suficient number of credible witnesses. I beg once more to observe, that the testimony of Matthew and John, is the chief thing we ought to attend to, as no other could be received in a Court of justice; and that they should be silent Upon the subject, is certainly very remarkable. If they saw him ascend into heaven, they could not omit to mention it, the omission, as we said before, would be very culpable; and if this argument appears of great weight in the case of Lazarus, how infinitely more important does it not appear, when applied to Christ's ascension into heaven? Besides, is it possible that Matthew and John, who were eye witnesses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Witnesses to the Historicity of Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Witnesses to the Historicity of Jesus Classic Reprint written by Arthur Drews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witnesses to the Historicity of Jesus The present work is an abbreviated and amended version, for English readers, of the volume which the author recently published as the second part of The Christ-Myth (English translation, 1910, Fisher Unwin). The author described this part as "an answer to his opponents, with special reference to theological methods," and dealt in the early part of it with the theological critics who had assailed the results and the methods adopted by him. It will be seen that the fault of method is entirely on the side of the opponents, and that theologians can maintain the historical reality of Jesus on methodical arguments only when their methods are pre-arranged to load to that result. It is not the author's intention wholly to omit the points of this controversy, as in this respect there is no difference between the theologians of Germany and those of other countries. The chief aim of the work, however, is to collect, examine, and refute the arguments which are advanced on the theological side for the historicity of Jesus. In spite of their arrogant behaviour, the German theologians have not been able to produce one single decisive reason for the historicity of Jesus. It remains to be seen whether the English authorities can adduce better proof of the validity of the Christian belief than their German colleagues have done. Besides doing this necessary critical work, it is hoped that the book may also provide a better explanation of the rise of the Christian religion than historical theology, as it is called, has yet afforded. Book Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist

Download or read book Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist written by Brant Pitre and published by Image. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory exploration of the Jewish roots of the Last Supper that seeks to understand exactly what happened at Jesus’ final Passover. “Clear, profound and practical—you do not want to miss this book.”—Dr. Scott Hahn, author of The Lamb’s Supper and The Fourth Cup Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as: What was the Passover like at the time of Jesus? What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah? What was Jesus’ purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover? And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, “This is my body… This is my blood”? To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous Manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys—the Passover, the Manna, and the Bread of the Presence—have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus’ presence in “the breaking of the bread.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Jewish Social Life in the Days of Christ Throughout, my constant object has been to illustrate the New Testament history and teaching. Even the Scripture Index at the close will show in how many instances this has been attempted. Most earnestly then do I hope, that these pages may be found to cast some additional light on the New Testament, and that they will convey fresh evidence - to my mind of the strongest kind - and in a new direction, of the truth of those things which are most surely believed among us. And now it only remains at the close of these investigations once more to express my own full and joyous belief in that grand truth to which all leads up - that christ IS the end OF the law for righteousness TO every one that believeth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial of the Witnesses of the Resurrection of Jesus It may easily be imagined that this opened a door to much dispute, and determined the conversation for the remainder of the evening to this subject. The dispute ran through almost all the particulars mentioned in Woolston's pieces; but the thread of it was broken by several digressions, and the pur suit of things which were brought accidentally into the discourse. At length one of the company said, pleasantly, Gentlemen, you don't argue like law. Yers; if I were judge in this cause, I would hold you better to the point. The company took the him, and cried, they should be glad to have the cause reheard, and him to be the judge. The gentlemen who had. Engaged with mettle and spirit in a dispute which arose accidentally, seemed very unwilling to be drawn into a formal controversy; and especially the gentleman who argued against Woolston, thought the matter grew too serious for him, and excused himself from undertaking a con troversy in religion, of all others the most momen tous: But he was told, that the argument should be confined merely to the nature of the evidence. Book Jesus the Divine Messiah

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus, the Divine Messiah: An Address to JewsThat he was to be a man, is evident from the primeval promise in Eden, where he is described as the seed of the woman, as also from the assurances elsewhere recorded, that he should be the offspring of Abraham, and the son of David. But this point is admitted by the Jews. And need not be fauber insisted upon. Their Scriptures, however, speak with much distinctness of a higher nature. He was to be the Son of God in a sense which supposes equality and indeed oneness with God. The names and the attributes of humanity are ascribed to him, and we know him to be a man. In like manner are we taught his Divinity, by the ascription to him of the names and attributes, the works and glory which are peculiar to God.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
