Download or read book Emancipation Poverty The Ashkenazi Jews of Amsterdam written by K. Sonnenberg-Stern and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-01-27 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive study examining the impact of emancipation on the lives of Amsterdam's Jews. The enactment of equality in 1796 failed to provide these Jews with similar rights and opportunities as the non-Jews; two-thirds of Amsterdam's Jewish community remained poor for much of the nineteenth century. Even though the declaration of emancipation should have provided the Jews with legal and social equality, the Dutch authorities continued to retain their perception of the Jews as a separate and different group of predominantly uncultured paupers and never made it their priority to remove all restrictive measures.

Download or read book Jerusalem on the Amstel written by Lipika Pelham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Amsterdam was a cosmopolitan "carnival of nations:" French Huguenots, North African merchants, Spanish Moriscos--and Iberian New Christians, formerly Jewish families forcibly converted to Catholicism, now fleeing the Inquisition and rediscovering their ancestral faith. This is the extraordinary tale of Amsterdam's prosperous Sephardi community during the Dutch Golden Age. Trading, writing, publishing, staging plays and being painted by Rembrandt, this Nação (Nation) of formerly wandering Jews not only settled but thrived, enjoying high status and unparalleled freedom. At a time when Dutch Catholics were repressed and Jews elsewhere were confined to the ghetto, this community dared to nurture the 'Hope of Israel', sowing the seeds of Zionism. Lipika Pelham charts the captivating history of Amsterdam's Jews, from their integral role in the Dutch economic miracle and the Enlightenment to a somber coda in 1942, when the Nazis herded them into the "Jewish Theater" for deportation to the camps. But this was not the death of the resilient Nação--Pelham also seeks out its descendants in present-day Amsterdam, offering poignant reflection on the meaning of nationhood, the Holocaust and what remains of Jerusalem on the Amstel.

Download or read book Sephardic Playwrights of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries in Amsterdam written by Haydee Litovsky and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holland was the first of the Lower countries to give refuge to Marranos (crypto-Jews) from Spain who opted to return to open observance of Judaism. The city of Amsterdam became the center of Jewish hope in the seventeenth century. It was in this city that a number of Sephardic playwrights brought about a renaissance of Jewish drama. Although there is an abundance of scholarly research in the field of the Spanish Comedia and its main representatives in Spain, no critic or scholar has dealt with the small but important group of Sephardic playwrights who, following the footsteps of Lope, developed the Spanish Comedia in Amsterdam. This study analyzes the plays of these Sephardic playwrights: Miguel Levi de Barrios, Rehuel Jessurun, Moses Zacuto and David Franco Mendes. Contents: The Conversos of Spain and The Jews of Amsterdam; Comedias de Capa y Espada (Cloak and Sword Plays); Oriental/Captive Plays; Autos Sacramentales; Biblical Plays
