Download or read book The Silver of Malta written by Alaine Apap Bologna and published by Midsea Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue was compiled to compliment one of Patrimonju's most prestigious exhibitions, Silver of Malta. The nine hundred and ninety-five entries consist of silver items created by Maltese and foreign silversmiths that settled in Malta, ranging from mid 16th Century till the 19th Century. These objets d'art commissioned by the Maltese, the Knights and also by the British residents, became highly collectable items of exceptional craftsmanship of an international standard. The wide variety of exhibits included silver for banqueting and tea tables, the famous oil lamps (lampieri), glove trays (guantieri), salvers (sootocoppe), scent flasks (Balsamini), snuff-boxes, jewelry and several others. Religious silver was also exhibited but restricted to items used in the house or house chapel. The catalogue is forwarded by a synoptic essay on the Influence of European Silver on the Maltese Art of Silversmithing, and includes an exhaustive Glossary and an illustrated section to the Makers' Marks of all the recorded silversmiths producing silver in Malta. Alaine Apap Bologna is an art historian and connoisseur, who specialised in silver and objets d'art at Christie's Geneva becoming the head of the silver and watch departments.

Download or read book Literary Brooklyn written by Evan Hughes and published by Holt Paperbacks. This book was released on 2011-08-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, here is Brooklyn's story through the eyes of its greatest storytellers. Like Paris in the twenties or postwar Greenwich Village, Brooklyn today is experiencing an extraordinary cultural boom. In recent years, writers of all stripes—from Jhumpa Lahiri, Jennifer Egan, and Colson Whitehead to Nicole Krauss and Jonathan Safran Foer—have flocked to its patchwork of distinctive neighborhoods. But as literary critic and journalist Evan Hughes reveals, the rich literary life now flourishing in Brooklyn is part of a larger, fascinating history. With a dynamic mix of literary biography and urban history, Hughes takes us on a tour of Brooklyn past and present and reveals that hiding in Walt Whitman's Fort Greene Park, Hart Crane's Brooklyn Bridge, the raw Williamsburg of Henry Miller's youth, Truman Capote's famed house on Willow Street, and the contested streets of Jonathan Lethem's Boerum Hill is the story of more than a century of life in America's cities. Literary Brooklyn is a prismatic investigation into a rich literary inheritance, but most of all it's a deep look into the beloved borough, a place as diverse and captivating as the people who walk its streets and write its stories.

Download or read book Ruskin s Venice written by Sarah Quill and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This title was first published in 2000: John Ruskin's three-volume "The Stones of Venice" (1851-3) remains massively influential in art and architecture. To mark the centenary of Ruskin's death, this illustrated guide links Ruskin's descriptions of individual buildings with a photograph of the architecture and sculpture as it is today. Much of Ruskin's prose is reproduced, together with many of his drawings and watercolours and a number of 19th-century engravings. Sarah Quill's photographs identify the details described by Ruskin and show the extent to which the city's architecture has survived, or changed, since first publication of "The Stones of Venice". The opening chapter provides an introduction to Ruskin's involvment with Venice and to the periods and styles of Venetian architecture."--Provided by publisher.
Download or read book David Wojnarowicz written by David Breslin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the late 1970s, David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992) created a body of work that spanned photography, painting, music, film, sculpture, writing, and activism. Largely self-taught, he came to prominence in New York in the 1980s, a period marked by creative energy, financial precariousness, and profound cultural changes. Intersecting movementsgraffiti, new and no wave music, conceptual photography, performance, and neo-expressionist paintingmade New York a laboratory for innovation. Wojnarowicz refused a signature style, adopting a wide variety of techniques with an attitude of radical possibility. Distrustful of inherited structuresa feeling amplified by the resurgence of conservative politicshe varied his repertoire to better infiltrate the prevailing culture. Wojnarowicz saw the outsider as his true subject. Queer and later diagnosed as HIV-positive, he became an impassioned advocate for people with AIDS when an inconceivable number of friends, lovers, and strangers were dying due to government inaction. Wojnarowiczs work documents and illuminates a desperate period of American history: that of the AIDS crisis and culture wars of the late 1980s and early 1990s. But his rightful place is also among the raging and haunting iconoclastic voices, from Walt Whitman to William S. Burroughs, who explore American myths, their perpetuation, their repercussions, and their violence. Like theirs, his work deals directly with the timeless subjects of sex, spirituality, love, and loss. Wojnarowicz, who was thirty-seven when he died from AIDS-related complications, wrote: To make the private into something public is an action that has terrific ramifications.
