Book excerpt: Gaze has an incredible power. Even our auditory perception of space is influenced by gaze and experimental studies have also shown that in social interactions a steady gaze is a sure asset and that the eyes can change the answer of our partner (Keating, Mazur, Segall 1977). The eyes are even more important in the first contact with somebody, as many experts have observed that the first 30 seconds and the first 4 minutes of an encounter have crucial significance (Zunin 1976). In these cases many times we get answers from other people that in reality we create unconsciously. It has also been experimentally proved that the effectiveness of certain therapies can be directly related to the gaze interaction (Harrigan, Oxman e Rothental 1985). Other experimental studies have shown that our logical mind is reduced and emotions are felt more intensely when somebody looks at us intensively. In hypnotism, the effects of the hypnotic gaze inductions are noteworthy. However, we should also consider that there are two types of inductions referred to as "hypnotic gaze induction." In the first one, the use of the eyes is intermixed with words. In the second type, the most powerful and mysterious, no words at all are used, just the eyes and sometimes the hands. How we practice it in our school is as a completely non verbal technique. It is called "fascination." Behind it there is a very ancient secret school, that we can trace back to the Ancient Romans' time and even before. Aristotle, Plutarcus, Plinius, Marsilius Ficinus, Simone Maiolo, and even St. Thomas, Albertus Magnus and many others acknowledged the existence of such a power. Even the Greek tradition of the power of the Medusa is connected to it.

  • Author : Alan Dundes
  • Publisher : Univ of Wisconsin Press

Book excerpt: The evil eye--the power to inflict illness, damage to property, or even death simply by gazing at or praising someone--is among the most pervasive and powerful folk beliefs in the Indo-European and Semitic world. It is also one of the oldest, judging from its appearance in the Bible and in Sumerian texts five thousand years old. Remnants of the superstition persist today when we drink toasts, tip waiters, and bless sneezers. To avert the evil eye, Muslim women wear veils, baseball players avoid mentioning a no-hitter in progress, and traditional Jews say their business or health is "not bad" (rather than "good"). Though by no means universal, the evil eye continues to be a major factor in the behavior of millions of people living in the Mediterranean and Arab countries, as well as among immigrants to the Americas. This widespread superstition has attracted the attention of many scholars, and the twenty-one essays gathered in this book represent research from diverse perspectives: anthropology, classics, folklore studies, ophthalmology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, sociology, and religious studies. Some essays are fascinating reports of beliefs about the evil eye, from India and Iran to Scotland and Slovak-American communities; others analyze the origin, function, and cultural significance of this folk belief from ancient times to the present day. Editor Alan Dundes concludes the volume by proffering a comprehensive theoretical explanation of the evil eye. Anyone who has ever knocked on wood to ward off misfortune will enjoy this generous sampling of evil eye scholarship, and may never see the world through the same eyes again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the reason magnetism is so powerful is probably because it activates our enteric brain, corresponding to the solar plexus and our hara center. Most of existing therapies and methods work as there it is just one brain, the brain in our head that rules our body, but this is not true.If we want true healing we must activate a second brain that many times we even don't suppose to have. The two centers of solar plexus and hara are connected, and normally for stabilizing the person in the hara we must pass through a procedure of activation at the height of the solar plexus. You must realize that the enteric brain controls the majority of the functions of the physical body and, above all, that is it which created and which continues to nourish the brain1. If it ceases to do so a person becomes incapable of activity, he has a headache or feels drowsy and cannot think any more. Cutting-edge research is currently investigating how the second brain mediates the body's immune response; after all, at least 70 percent of our immune system is aimed at the gut to expel and kill foreign invaders.
