This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were the Sephardic Jews of the Ottoman Empire? What lasting lessons does their spiritual life provide for future generations? “How did the Judeo-Spanish-speaking Jews of the Ottoman Empire manage to achieve spiritual triumph? To answer this question, we need to have a firm understanding of their historical experience.... We need to be aware of the dark, unpleasant elements in their environments; but we also need to see the spiritual, cultural light in their dwellings that imbued their lives with meaning and honor.” —from Chapter 1, “The Inner Life of the Sephardim” In this groundbreaking work, Rabbi Marc Angel explores the teachings, values, attitudes, and cultural patterns that characterized Judeo-Spanish life over the generations and how the Sephardim maintained a strong sense of pride and dignity, even when they lived in difficult political, economic, and social conditions. Along with presenting the historical framework and folklore of Jewish life in the Ottoman Empire, Rabbi Angel focuses on what you can learn from the Sephardic sages and from their folk wisdom that can help you live a stronger, deeper spiritual life.

Download or read book Portuguese English Bilingual Bible The Gospels written by King James Version Almeida Recebida and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Gospels, volume five, of the Portuguese English Bilingual Bible book series. It is in English and Portuguese, two of the top ten most widely spoken languages on Earth. It is the King James Version and Almeida Recebida translations, good and accurate translations for learning either language, as well as having a correct and reliable translation from the received texts of the Holy Bible itself. The translators relied on "formal equivalence" to preserve phrasing and literal content from the Hebrew and Greek documents. This present volume is divided in columns for each language, with each corresponding verse line matching its equal on the opposite side of the page. The font size and style is easy to read. Typo's and the rare instance of missing information (such as superscriptions above psalms and colophons ending epistles) have been translated from English to Portuguese, and in some cases Hebrew into Portuguese, by Alan Lewis Silva, who has lovingly and carefully edited this wonderful book.

Download or read book Grammar of the Mexican Language written by Horacio Carochi and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary native language of central Mexico before and after the Spanish conquest, Nahuatl was used from the mid-sixteenth century forward in an astounding array of alphabetic written documents. James Lockhart, an eminent historian of early Latin America, is the leading interpreter of Nahuatl texts. One of his main tools of instruction has been Horacio Carochi's monumental 1645 Arte de la lengua mexicana, the most influential work ever published on Nahuatl grammar. This new edition includes the original Spanish and an English translation on facing pages. The corpus of examples, source of much of our knowledge about vowel quality and glottal stop in Nahuatl, is presented once in its original form, once in a rationalized manner. Copious footnotes provide explanatory commentary and more literal translations of some of Carochi's examples. The volume is an indispensable pedagogical tool and the first critical edition of the premier monument of Nahuatl grammatical literature.
Download or read book Dependence Independence and Death written by William James and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dependence, Independence, and Death: Toward a Psychobiography of Delmira Agustini depicts the life of Uruguayan poet Delmira Agustini (1886-1914) based on her poems and other writings. These works give evidence of two constructs related to a psychological conflict in her life. The first is a dependence/independence dichotomy, thematized as a polarized love relationship between speaker and Other, who can represent two individuals or dual aspects of the poet's self. The second involves the poet's fascination with death, which becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when she is murdered by her ex-husband at the age of twenty-seven.

Download or read book The Guitar of God written by Ronald E. Surtz and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, Spanish literary historiography has virtually ignored hundreds of women who wrote between 1500 and 1700. Most of them wrote to record, defend, and disseminate their spiritual visions, for despite the general disempowerment of Spanish women, female visionaries enjoyed considerable authority. This book recovers and examines the visionary experiences of Mother Juana de la Cruz, the most famous of these women during her lifetime and for two centuries afterwards. Born of peasant stock, she became abbess of a Franciscan convent and a mystic who was visited not only by Cardinal Cisneros, but by Emperor Charles V himself. Ronald E. Surtz places Mother Juana's visions in the religious and social context of the age and discusses such pertinent biographical elements as the nun's own androgyny. His focus is on the questions of gender, power, and authority, so pertinent to our own age. The Guitar of God will be of particular interest to scholars and students of late medieval Spanish culture, religion, and history, and women's studies.
