Download or read book Art of the 20th Century written by Karl Ruhrberg and published by Taschen. This book was released on 2000 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original edition of this ambitious reference was published in hardcover in 1998, in two oversize volumes (10x13"). This edition combines the two volumes into one; it's paperbound ("flexi-cover"--the paper has a plastic coating), smaller (8x10", and affordable for art book buyers with shallower pockets--none of whom should pass it by. The scope is encyclopedic: half the work (originally the first volume) is devoted to painting; the other half to sculpture, new media, and photography. Chapters are arranged thematically, and each page displays several examples (in color) of work under discussion. The final section, a lexicon of artists, includes a small bandw photo of each artist, as well as biographical information and details of work, writings, and exhibitions. Ruhrberg and the three other authors are veteran art historians, curators, and writers, as is editor Walther. c. Book News Inc.

Download or read book Keep It Moving written by Rachel Rivenc and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetic art not only includes movement but often depends on it to produce an intended effect and therefore fully realize its nature as art. It can take a multiplicity of forms and include a wide range of motion, from motorized and electrically driven movement to motion as the result of wind, light, or other sources of energy. Kinetic art emerged throughout the twentieth century and had its major developments in the 1950s and 1960s. Professionals responsible for conserving contemporary art are in the midst of rethinking the concept of authenticity and solving the dichotomy often felt between original materials and functionality of the work of art. The contrast is especially acute with kinetic art when a compromise between the two often seems impossible. Also to be considered are issues of technological obsolescence and the fact that an artist’s chosen technology often carries with it strong sociological and historical information and meanings.
Download or read book 1946 1968 written by Timothy Stroud and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new title of the 5-volume series covering the fundamental events and pivotal works of international art in the 20th century. With the third volume, this history of art goes past the halfway mark of the 20th century to enter the contemporary sphere. The book relates how artists reacted to the greatest tragedy of the 20th century and responded to the advent of the society of mass communication and consumption, to the moulding of the world in which we find ourselves ever more deeply immersed today. The collapse and rebirth of Europe, the years of the Cold War and the evolution leading to the upheavals of 1968 are fundamental themes of this third volume.

Download or read book Niki Jean Posters written by Niki de Saint-Phalle and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The poster art of Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely is the last body of work of both artists that remains largely unknown to the general public. Shown here for the first time, in magnificent color, are all 41 of Niki's posters as well as 87 by Jean that, along with their joint projects, produce an invaluable catalogue raisonne of the graphic art of this unforgettable couple." "While Jean Tinguely's posters originally seemed like construction sketches for his kinetic objects, they later developed into rotating abstract color compositions. And, within a short time, Niki's posters became playgrounds for her Nanas. Well-padded and acrobatic, sometimes winged or merely a torso, they danced around the advertising columns of the world until the '90s."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Sculpture P Z index written by Antonia Boström and published by Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the influence of Enlightenment and Romantic-era theories of the mind on the writings of Godwin and Shelley and examines the ways in which these writers use their fiction to explore such psychological phenomena as ruling passions, madness, the therapeutic value of confessions (both spoken and written), and the significance of dreams. Unlike most studies of Godwin and Shelley, it does not privilege their masterworks--for the most part, it focuses on their lesser-known writings. Brewer also considers the works of other Romantic-era writers, as well as the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophical and medical theories that informed Godwin's and Shelley's presentations of mental states and types of behavior.
