This poetry reflects to reflect modern, urban black poplar culture. His poems transmit a new black self- confidence. The aim of this paper is to give reasons for those assumptions by analyzing a jazz poem closely. The poem that is to be analyzed is called „Railroad Avenue“ and was published first in 1926.

But American poetry, too, has been vitally motivated by the example of jazz musicians and their ideas of personal sound and spontaneous composition. Working from this crucial connection between arts, Charles Hartman shows how music like that of Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman, and poems by Robert Creeley, Michael Harper, David Antin, Philip Levine, Ai, and Jackson Mac Low, illuminate each other. Juxtaposing musicians and poets, he also explores the equivocal boundary between oral and written art. His study then extends to songs by popular artists such as Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, and the Roches, whose work combines words and music directly and literalizes the idea of voice. Applying close-reading techniques to jazz and adapting Bakhtin's theory of dialogue, Hartman confronts the tangled issues of improvisation and composition, originality, authenticity, disguise, and recognition. Applying prosodic analysis to emphasize the musicality of African American poetic performance, she examines the gendered meanings evident in collaborative performances and in the criticism, images, and sounds circulating within jazz cultures. Jones also considers poets who participated in contemporary venues for black writing such as the Dark Room Collective and the Cave Canem Foundation, including Harryette Mullen, Elizabeth Alexander, and Carl Phillips. J. Anderson III, son of the brilliant composer, Thomas Anderson Jr., asserts that jazz became in the twentieth century not only a way of revising old musical forms, such as the spiritual and work song, but also a way of examining the African American social and cultural experience. He traces the growing history of jazz poetry and examines the work of four innovative and critically acclaimed African American poets whose work is informed by a jazz aesthetic: Stephen Jonas (1925?–1970) and the unjustly overlooked Bob Kaufman (1925–1986), who have affinities with Beat poetry; Jayne Cortez (1936– ), whose work is rooted in surrealism; and the difficult and demanding Nathaniel Mackey (1947– ), who has links to the language writers. As I wrote each poem, the lines sang themselves into fragments, time was displaced, and reharmonization occurred. What started as one thing gradually became another. The remaining poems were written with the song lines of a place or event or the rhythms of the road as guide. I wrote as a voyeur watching life from a safe distance, an eavesdropper, a marginalien. The links between poetry and improvised music are as ancient as language itself, and telling stories in new ways is fundamental to human existence. It is not a choice. I hope that I have captured the essence of the musicians world and the marginaliens found along the way.

In intersecting and complementary ways, Hughes, Henderson, Sanchez, and Baraka fashioned their griotism from theorizations of artistry as political engagement, and, in turn, formulated a Black aesthetic based on jazz performativity –a series of jazz-infused iterations that form a complex pattern of literary, musical, historical, and political moments in constant cross-fertilizing dialogues with one another. This form of poetic call-and-response is essential for it allows the possibility of intergenerational dialogues between poets and musicians as well as dialogical potential between song and politics, between Africa and Black America, within the poems. More importantly, these jazz dialogisms underline the construction of the Black Aesthetic as conceptualized respectively by the griotism of Hughes, of Henderson, and of Sanchez and Baraka.
