Book Ten Giants of Jazz

    Book Details:
  • Author : David R. Bubsey
  • Publisher : Cognella Academic Publishing
  • Release : 2012-03-26
  • ISBN : 9781621311577
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Ten Giants of Jazz written by David R. Bubsey and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ten Giants of Jazz" is an anthology that explores the seminal contributions of a variety of great jazz artists. Although the expression giants of jazz is not new, this book takes the approach that certain artists are so closely linked to certain genres, that to tell their stories is to tell the (hi)story of jazz itself. Some of the jazz giants featured in this text are Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie. The book also discusses Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and John Coltrane. By learning about these artists, readers will also learn about genres of jazz. The book begins with Early New Orleans and Chicago jazz, then moves on to swing/big-band music, bebop, Latin, hard bop, cool, modal, fusion, and free form/avant-garde jazz. The final chapter presents a discussion of jazz today and the vibrant promise of its future. The numerous book excerpts provide a lively, engaging, narrative-oriented reading experience for students. Recommended listening and viewing examples available on YouTube give students the chance to see the artists and hear the music, bringing the written word to life in a meaningful way. The variety of selections on each artist and related genre gives students a well-rounded understanding that moves beyond the typical memorization of names, genres, instruments and song titles.Of special note for both students and professors are the end-of-chapter inserts, which make suggestions for further reading and listening, provide definitions of key terms, and give additional information to enhance understanding and deepen knowledge. "Ten Giants of Jazz" is an excellent introduction for students who have little or no knowledge of jazz, and no previous musical training. David R. Bubsey is a professional trombonist on the faculty of East Tennessee State University where he teaches the history of jazz. He holds the B.M.E. degree from The Ohio State University, the M.M. degree from Butler University, and is presently a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at the University of Kentucky. His scholarly interest is the music of the twentieth century. He has over nineteen years of experience in music education, and his performance experiences over the past thirty years include a wide variety of settings such as symphony orchestra, brass quintet, theater orchestra, and jazz big band. While a member of the prestigious United States Army Field Band in Washington D.C., he performed with the Jazz Ambassadors on their 1989 tour of India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glorious Days and Nights is a personal account of the fifty-year career of jazz photographer Herb Snitzer, with a special focus on his years in New York City from 1957 to 1964. A photojournalist for Life, Look, and Fortune, Snitzer was the photo editor and later associate editor of the influential jazz magazine Metronome. During the 1960s, politics, race, and social strife and unrest swirled in Snitzer's life as a working artist. But throughout the bus boycotts, demonstrations, civil and racial unrest, what remained constant for him was jazz. Snitzer recalls what it was like to go on the road with these musicians. His reflections run the gamut from serious meditations on his development as a young photographer working with musicians already of great stature to more conversational recollections of casual moments spent having fun with the jazz artists many of whom became close friends. This book includes Snitzer's very best jazz photographs. He reveals the essences of the artists, their struggles, joys, and pains. A number of Snitzer's jazz images have become iconic, including Louis Armstrong with the Star of David, Lester Young at The Five Spot Café in New York City, John Coltrane reflected in a mirror, Thelonious Monk with piano keys reflected in his sunglasses, and Miles Davis at Newport. With eighty-five black-and-white images of jazz giants, Glorious Days and Nights provides a long-awaited testimony to the friendships and artistry that Snitzer developed over his remarkable career.

  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 0520285417
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Loft Jazz written by Michael C. Heller and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York loft jazz scene of the 1970s was a pivotal period for uncompromising, artist-produced work. Faced with a flagging jazz economy, a group of young avant-garde improvisers chose to eschew the commercial sphere and develop alternative venues in the abandoned factories and warehouses of Lower Manhattan. Loft Jazz provides the first book-length study of this period, tracing its history amid a series of overlapping discourses surrounding collectivism, urban renewal, experimentalist aesthetics, underground archives, and the radical politics of self-determination.
