Book Mama s Boy

Download or read book Mama s Boy written by Dustin Lance Black and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This heartfelt, deeply personal memoir explores how a celebrated filmmaker and activist and his conservative Mormon mother built bridges across today’s great divides—and how our stories hold the power to heal. • Adapted as an HBO documentary now streaming on HBO Max. “A beautifully written, utterly compelling account of growing up poor and gay with a thrice married, physically disabled, deeply religious Mormon mother, and the imprint this irrepressible woman made on the character of Dustin Lance Black.” —Jon Krakauer, bestselling author of Missoula and Under the Banner of Heaven Dustin Lance Black wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for Milk and helped overturn California’s anti–gay marriage Proposition 8, but as an LGBTQ activist he has unlikely origins—a conservative Mormon household outside San Antonio, Texas. There he was raised by a single mother who, as a survivor of childhood polio, endured brutal surgeries as well as braces and crutches for life. Despite the abuse and violence of two questionably devised Mormon marriages, she imbued Lance with her inner strength and irrepressible optimism. When Lance came out to his mother at age twenty-one, she initially derided his sexuality as a sinful choice. It may seem like theirs was a house destined to be divided—and at times it was. But in the end, they did not let their differences define them or the relationship that had inspired two remarkable lives. This heartfelt, deeply personal memoir explores how a mother and son built bridges across great cultural divides—and how our stories hold the power to heal.

Book Excavations at Nemea The early Hellenistic Stadium

Download or read book Excavations at Nemea The early Hellenistic Stadium written by Darice Elizabeth Birge and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1974, under the direction of Stephen G. Miller, the Classics Department of the University of California, Berkeley, has been excavating at Nemea, one of four sites in Greece of ancient athletic games and festivals. This second volume in theExcavations at Nemeaseries presents the Early Hellenistic stadium, used to celebrate the games from around 330 to 271 b.c. The presentation of remains includes findings on related structures--the entrance tunnel, with its ancient graffiti, and the Apodyterion, or undressing room, used by the athletes who competed--as well as on the track, the hydraulic system, the seating for judges and spectators, the starting line, the starting mechanism, and the turning post for foot races. All the structures and artifacts are set into the broader context of other contemporaneous stadia. The contributing authors provide insight into the Games at Nemea by analyzing the coins found at the site and relating them to the makeup of the crowds and by giving a human dimension to the Games by focusing on an inscription honoring the death of a Lydian there. The architectural remains at Nemea give a "stop action" picture of the stadium and the activities associated with it at the beginning of the Hellenistic era. They represent evidence of an entertainment industry that began to develop, in both theatrical performances and athletic contests, in the time of Alexander the Great--one that set apart professional performers from citizen spectators, a separation that also reflected changes in Hellenistic education and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, Hollywood has learned the secret of how to captivate our minds through the art of make-believe. Life in our world has become so unpredictable and uncertain, that it has become hard to distinguish between real-life and make-believe. It's time for God's true people to "wake up," and distance themselves as much as possible from the perils of a negative world; and take time to live a life filled with hope and promise. Putting our trust in God, loving and enjoying our families, respecting others and showing appreciation to our friends can put us in the frame of mind to continuously thank God for the precious time He has allowed us on this earth. Thomas Vincent Murphy has been involved in the music industry as a writer, arranger, producer and performer. He has been a major part of many music projects and productions. His peers, the public and the critics have given him high marks; but his desire to please God keeps him humble in a world filled with arrogant people. He has worked closely with radio and television for years by writing jingles, music for television commercials seen worldwide, being music director for a television program, and by hosting and being the executive producer of his own radio programs. His Christian variety program "Murph's Positive Reflections" is being heard worldwide in individual markets and by advanced satellite technology and the internet. He enjoys broadcasting his 'live" weekly program from "The Broadcast Center" in NW Florida each Sunday; which is a varied version of the worldwide program. As a newspaper columnist, he's able to reach people with positive messages each week through his writings. Thomas is thankful to God for his family, many blessings, gifts and opportunities.

Book excerpt: Publisher's Note: From a Black Perspective is the beginning manifestation of several collective dreams. Volume One, "The Blood," features five up and coming authors. As a whole, the project is a gathering of entertaining, inspirational, and educated voices modeled after the collective creative literary power of the long-celebrated Harlem Renaissance. From a Black Perspective is a celebration of the diversity within the black literary community. It serves as an antithesis to the notion that the black community is monolithic in our interests, values, political views, and the genres in which we write but rather a people as varied as the hues of our skin. This three-part anthology affords Rainbow Room Publishing, LLC to fulfill one of its primary objectives: providing a vehicle and platform to facilitate the publication of as many diverse and otherwise underrepresented voices as possible. Your support of this project further enables the publication of each contributing author's individual creative and publishing efforts while supporting numerous black voices. We invite you to embark with us on this three-part literary journey and encourage you to reserve space on your bookshelves for Volume Two, "The People," highlighting more talented writers as well as more individual works from each of these published authors in 2021 and Volume Three, "The Homeland" in 2022.
