Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hazel Cherokee and Booth Dixon had been good friends since college. Booth would do anything for her. Hazel had the unpleasant task of visiting her father one last time in jail to find out Grandma’s last wishes, and she needed some muscle in case her dad got out of hand. He was a mean man and deserved everything he was getting. Booth couldn’t make it, but he’d send one of his brothers… As soon as Jayden came into the room, he stared at her like he’d never seen a woman before. She was getting annoyed with him because he just kept staring. “I’m a woman. Haven’t you ever seen one before?” He nodded, then grinned. “You’re not all that charming if that’s what you’re going for. Sit down and keep an eye on my father. That’s what you’re here for, isn’t it?” “Yes. I’ll protect you with my life.” She said that they’d have him chained up. She doubted that it would ever go that far. “You never know. Some people are stupider than you think. But he won’t touch you. I swear it on my mother’s heart.”

Book Reimagining School Discipline for the 21st Century Student

Download or read book Reimagining School Discipline for the 21st Century Student written by John A. Williams III and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regularly, schools and their personnel enact school disciplinary practices without considering how to harness the engagement of students, practitioners, and communities to enact transformative changes that reduce if not eliminate punitive school discipline approaches. Reimagining School Discipline for the 21st Century centralizes the assets and strengths of historically marginalized students and the professional knowledge of school personnel as possible avenues to implement solutions to eliminate school discipline disproportionality. Rather than redressing the issues of school discipline disproportionality overall, this book examines the existence of school on student groups who, according to research and national and state reports, are afflicted the most: African American, Latinx, Native American, and LGBTQ+ population. A confluence of these identities can exacerbate such disproportionality, which based on the literature decreases the academic growth of students. However, situated within these disparities are opportunities to better and critically engage students based on their cultural, racial/ethnic, and social emotional learning assets. The significant feature of this book lies in its purpose and audience reach. Each chapter was written based on the scholar’s affinity to that student group or practitioner’s affiliation to that specific profession. This provides a genuine perspective and knowledge based on first hand experiences concerning school discipline and applicable approaches to remedy such issues. Additionally, all the chapters articulate the pressing issue of school discipline according to their group, and explicates best-practices to best serve the assets of students in K-12 school settings. As this book is situated, the intended audience is for the following stakeholders, policy makers, social workers, school counselors, school administrators, teachers, and community organizers who want to make impactful and socially-just changes in their school(s) immediately.

But for this New York socialite, the orchard is a chance to prove to my family—and myself—that I can do more, be more. I may not exactly know what I want out of life yet, but I’m determined to stick to something. And no, I’m not talking about the crabby bee farmer next door. Here’s what I know: if I can’t tough out one full month of a rooster waking me at sunrise, a poolhall parrot with a foul mouth, and a llama that swings both ways, not only will I lose my self-respect, I’ll lose my trust fund too. What I don’t know is why my neighbor with the bad attitude and a whole lot of sexy seems hellbent on sending me home. Well, he can buzz the hell off. At least until I accidentally stumble into his apiary, and things start to get a whole lot stickier...

Book Phoenix Zones

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hope Ferdowsian
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-04-06
  • ISBN : 022647609X
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Phoenix Zones written by Hope Ferdowsian and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-04-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few things get our compassion flowing like the sight of suffering. But our response is often shaped by our ability to empathize with others. Some people respond to the suffering of only humans or to one person’s plight more than another’s. Others react more strongly to the suffering of an animal. These divergent realities can be troubling—but they are also a reminder that trauma and suffering are endured by all beings, and we can learn lessons about their aftermath, even across species. With Phoenix Zones, Dr. Hope Ferdowsian shows us how. Ferdowsian has spent years traveling the world to work with people and animals who have endured trauma—war, abuse, displacement. Here, she combines compelling stories of survivors with the latest science on resilience to help us understand the link between violence against people and animals and the biological foundations of recovery, peace, and hope. Taking us to the sanctuaries that give the book its title, she reveals how the injured can heal and thrive if we attend to key principles: respect for liberty and sovereignty, a commitment to love and tolerance, the promotion of justice, and a fundamental belief that each individual possesses dignity. Courageous tales show us how: stories of combat veterans and wolves recovering together at a California refuge, Congolese women thriving in one of the most dangerous places on earth, abused chimpanzees finding peace in a Washington sanctuary, and refugees seeking care at Ferdowsian’s own medical clinic. These are not easy stories. Suffering is real, and recovery is hard. But resilience is real, too, and Phoenix Zones shows how we can foster it. It reveals how both people and animals deserve a chance to live up to their full potential—and how such a view could inspire solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our time.
