Book excerpt: Wonderful pages filled with the music of Jared's Song each character a single instrument intertwining with the others creating a symphony in words with adventurous passages, delicate movements, funny and sometimes sad melodies, resounding battles, heart stopping moments and dramatic tragedy. Elrek's Rise the third book in the series, is an amazing original story about Jared 'a legend in his own lifetime' and his son Elrek's life and adventures, the characters in the books leap into life before your eyes and are so easy to relate to even if you have not read the first books you will soon feel that the characters are more like members of your own family and you join the story with its unexpected twists and turns taking you by surprise and immersing you in the experience. Extract from book Someone above laughed and said something quite disgusting, and an arrow clanged off of Elrek's breastplate. "I'll take that as a refusal, then." He shouted. He had his standard take his horse away after he'd dismounted, and had four hundred Gold dismount, discard lances, and advance on foot with swords and shields. Elrek then approached the large gates of the castle and placed his hands against them and closed his eyes. This was Jared's trick, only sort of in reverse.

Book Bugsy Siegel

Download or read book Bugsy Siegel written by Michael Shnayerson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the notorious Jewish gangster who ascended from impoverished beginnings to the glittering Las Vegas strip "[A] brisk-reading chronicle of Siegel’s life and crimes."—Tom Nolan, Wall Street Journal "Fast-paced and absorbing. . . . With a keen eye for the amusing, and humanizing detail, [Shnayerson] enlivens the traditional rise-and-fall narrative."—Jenna Weissman Joselit, New York Times Book Review In a brief life that led to a violent end, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel (1906–1947) rose from desperate poverty to ill‑gotten riches, from an early‑twentieth‑century family of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants on the Lower East Side to a kingdom of his own making in Las Vegas. In this captivating portrait, author Michael Shnayerson sets out not to absolve Bugsy Siegel but rather to understand him in all his complexity. Through the 1920s, 1930s, and most of the 1940s, Bugsy Siegel and his longtime partner in crime Meyer Lansky engaged in innumerable acts of violence. As World War II came to an end, Siegel saw the potential for a huge, elegant casino resort in the sands of Las Vegas. Jewish gangsters built nearly all of the Vegas casinos that followed. Then, one by one, they disappeared. Siegel’s story laces through a larger, generational story of eastern European Jewish immigrants in the early‑ to mid‑twentieth century.

Book The Hidden History of Coined Words

Download or read book The Hidden History of Coined Words written by Ralph Keyes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful word-coinages--those that stay in currency for a good long time--tend to conceal their beginnings. We take them at face value and rarely when and where they were first minted. Engaging, illuminating, and authoritative, Ralph Keyes's The Hidden History of Coined Words explores the etymological underworld of terms and expressions and uncovers plenty of hidden gems. He also finds some fascinating patterns, such as that successful neologisms are as likely to be created by chance as by design. A remarkable number of new words were coined whimsically, originally intended to troll or taunt. Knickers, for example, resulted from a hoax; big bang from an insult. Casual wisecracking produced software, crowdsource, and blog. More than a few resulted from happy accidents, such as typos, mistranslations, and mishearing (bigly and buttonhole), or from being taken entirely out of context (robotics). Neologizers (a Thomas Jefferson coinage) include not just scholars and writers but cartoonists, columnists, children's book authors. Wimp originated with a book series, as did goop, and nerd from a book by Dr. Seuss. Coinages are often contested, controversy swirling around such terms as gonzo, mojo, and booty call. Keyes considers all contenders, while also leading us through the fray between new word partisans, and those who resist them strenuously. He concludes with advice about how to make your own successful coinage. The Hidden History of Coined Words will appeal not just to word mavens but history buffs, trivia contesters, and anyone who loves the immersive power of language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-Winner of the 2022 Harry M. Ward Book Prize From celebrated historian John Ferling, the underexplored history of the second half of the Revolutionary War, when, after years of fighting, American independence often seemed beyond reach. It was 1778, and the recent American victory at Saratoga had netted the U.S a powerful ally in France. Many, including General George Washington, presumed France's entrance into the war meant independence was just around the corner. Meanwhile, having lost an entire army at Saratoga, Great Britain pivoted to a “southern strategy.” The army would henceforth seek to regain its southern colonies, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, a highly profitable segment of its pre-war American empire. Deep into 1780 Britain's new approach seemed headed for success as the U.S. economy collapsed and morale on the home front waned. By early 1781, Washington, and others, feared that France would drop out of the war if the Allies failed to score a decisive victory that year. Sir Henry Clinton, commander of Britain's army, thought “the rebellion is near its end.” Washington, who had been so optimistic in 1778, despaired: “I have almost ceased to hope.” Winning Independence is the dramatic story of how and why Great Britain-so close to regaining several southern colonies and rendering the postwar United States a fatally weak nation ultimately failed to win the war. The book explores the choices and decisions made by Clinton and Washington, and others, that ultimately led the French and American allies to clinch the pivotal victory at Yorktown that at long last secured American independence.

Book Passing Thru a Composite Story

Download or read book Passing Thru a Composite Story written by Veredigno Atienza and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-08-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story of boys who went to school together from 1954 to 1971 at the Ateneo de Manila University. They are ADMU 198 (the sum of GS62, HS66, Coll70, and BSME71). Classmates who joined them for at least a year but graduated ahead, behind or not at all have also been included as part of ADMU 198. This is their composite autobiography, if there is such a genre. They contributed their respective recollections and impressions, and these were pooled together in what is hopefully a meaningful whole. I totally wash my hands of responsibility for anything libelous, scandalous, obscene, depraved, coarse, tasteless, irreverent, inane, opinionated, seditious or anything that is simply outrageous, and worth distancing one's self from. I was initially made editor or coordinator of this project under duress and in the absence of my own free will. I would have quit if only it was not so much fun to engage in such muck.

Book Jews and the American Slave Trade

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nation of Islam's Secret Relationship between Blacks and Jews has been called one of the most serious anti-Semetic manuscripts published in years. As Saul Friedman definitively documents in Jews and the American Slave Trade, historical evidence suggests that Jews played a minimal role in the transatlantic, South American, Caribbean, and antebellum slave trades. Friedman elucidates the role of American Jews toward the great nineteenth-century moral debate, the positions they took, and explains what shattered the alliance between these two vulnerable minority groups in America. Saul S. Friedman is a professor of Jewish and Middle Eastern history at Youngstown State. He has written five award-winning documentaries and many articles and books on Jewish history, including: Holocaust Literature, The Oberammergau Passion Play, Terein Diary of Gonda Redlich, and Without Future: The Plight of Syrian Jewry.
