Book The New Testament as Literature A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book The New Testament as Literature A Very Short Introduction written by Kyle Keefer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-24 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words, phrases, and stories of the New Testament permeate the English language. Indeed, this relatively small group of twenty-seven works, written during the height of the Roman Empire, not only helped create and sustain a vast world religion, but also have been integral to the larger cultural dynamics of the West, above and beyond particular religious expressions. Looking at the New Testament through the lens of literary study, Kyle Keefer offers an engrossing exploration of this revered religious text as a work of literature, but also keeps in focus its theological ramifications. Unique among books that examine the Bible as literature, this brilliantly compact introduction offers an intriguing double-edged look at this universal text--a religiously informed literary analysis. The book first explores the major sections of the New Testament--the gospels, Paul's letters, and Revelation--as individual literary documents. Keefer shows how, in such familiar stories as the parable of the Good Samaritan, a literary analysis can uncover an unexpected complexity to what seems a simple, straightforward tale. At the conclusion of the book, Keefer steps back and asks questions about the New Testament as a whole. He reveals that whether read as a single document or as a collection of works, the New Testament presents readers with a wide variety of forms and viewpoints, and a literary exploration helps bring this richness to light. A fascinating investigation of the New Testament as a classic literary work, this Very Short Introduction uses a literary framework--plot, character, narrative arc, genre--to illuminate the language, structure, and the crafting of this venerable text. About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

Book Teaching English at Japanese Universities

Download or read book Teaching English at Japanese Universities written by Paul Wadden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by leading English-language educators in Japan, this Handbook provides an in-depth guide for the new generation of teachers at Japanese universities. In clear, accessible prose, it offers practical and detailed advice on effective classroom pedagogy, student motivation, learning styles, classroom culture, national language policy, career opportunities, departmental politics, administrative mindset, and institutional identity. Its four sections—The setting, The courses, The classroom, and The workplace—examine issues faced by university language teachers as well as challenges confronted by the increasing number of scholars teaching English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) courses. Firmly grounded in contemporary teaching method and theory, the Handbook’s 23 chapters also acknowledge the influence of diverse movements such as World Englishes, global issues, gender, and positive psychology. Its three appendices contain information on organizations, books, journals, and websites particularly useful for Japanese university educators; explanation of types and rankings of schools; ways to learn more about individual institutions for job-hunting; and detailed information on the structure (and Japanese titles) of faculty and non-teaching staff at the typical university. This Handbook is an invaluable resource for anyone teaching, or aspiring to teach, at a Japanese university.

Matteo 28:18-20 "18. E Gesu, accostatosi, parlo loro, dicendo: Ogni potesta m'e stata data in cielo e sulla terra. 19. Andate dunque, ammaestrate tutti i popoli, battezzandoli nel nome del Padre e del Figliuolo e dello Spirito Santo, 20. insegnando loro d'osservar tutte quante le cose che v'ho comandate. Book The Japanese Translations of the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book The Japanese Translations of the Hebrew Bible written by Doron B. Cohen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese Translations of the Hebrew Bible: History, Inventory and Analysis, the first book of its kind in English, recounts the story of the translation of the Bible into Japanese, with particular focus on the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). It includes a detailed inventory of both full and partial OT translations into Japanese, describing the history of their making and the identity of the translators. Numerous quotations from the various translations are compared with the Hebrew original and with other versions, and analyzed linguistically and theologically. The analysis exposes the ways in which translators sought to bridge the wide linguistic and cultural gaps between the Hebrew Bible and Japan, and the ways in which their translations reflect certain aspects of Japanese society and the place of the Bible in it.
