Download or read book Direct Foreign Investment written by Kyoshi Kojima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct foreign investment and the activities of multinational corporations are new dynamic elements in the international economy. This book identifies, theoretically and practically, a Japanese model of multinational business operations which has characteristics differing from the American or "anti-trade oriented" type, and casts light on important policy implications concerning direct foreign investment and multinational corporations. By developing a macroeconomic approach to direct foreign investment, instead of the prevalent explanation from the viewpoint of business administration and industrial organisation, this study adds to current knowledge of the multinational corporation. It endeavours to bridge the gap of separated treatments between international trade and foreign investment, and presents an integrated theory from the viewpoint of a dynamic reorganisation in the international division of labour. The book also includes two introductory surveys on the survey of international division of labour and foreign investment.

This Handbook provides a state-of-the-field overview for students and researchers of Japanese. The volume also serves to introduce Japanese politics to readers less familiar with Japan. The volume is divided into two parts, roughly corresponding to domestic Japanese politics and Japan's international politics. Within the domestic politics part, there are four distinct sections: "Domestic Political Actors and Institutions," covering the Japanese Constitution, electoral systems, prime minister, Diet, bureaucracy, judiciary, and local government; "Political Parties and Coalitions," covering the Liberal Democratic Party, coalition government, Kōmeitō, and the political opposition; "Policymaking and the Public," covering the policymaking process, public opinion, civil society, and populism; and, "Political Economy and Social Policy," covering industrial, energy, social welfare, agricultural, monetary, and immigration policies, as well as social inequality. In the international relations part, there are four sections: "International Relations Frameworks," covering grand strategy, international organizations, and international status; "International Political Economy," covering trade, finance, foreign direct investment, the environment, economic regionalism, and the linkage between security and economics; "International Security," covering remilitarization, global and regional security multilateralism, nuclear nonproliferation, naval power, space security, and cybersecurity; and, "Foreign Relations" covering Japan's relations with the United States, China, South Korea, ASEAN, India, the European Union, and Russia. Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan written by Ralph Paprzycki and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment in Japan presents a detailed examination of recent trends of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) and their impact on the Japanese economy. Historically much less open to foreign trade and investment than other major economies, Japan experienced an unprecedented jump in FDI inflows around the turn of the millennium. This book looks at the profound changes in Japan that made this jump possible and considers foreign firms' potential contribution to productivity and overall economic growth. Detailed case studies illustrate that in certain sectors the presence of foreign firms already is a key factor shaping industry dynamics. Yet, despite recent changes, resistance to inward FDI remains strong and the government could do much more if it were committed to attracting FDI. Overall, Japan continues to appear reluctant to embrace fully, and therefore seems unlikely to benefit even more substantially from, globalization.

This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the relationship between Japanese FDI outflows, domestic and foreign fixed investment, and the exchange rate. The results indicate that aggregate FDI outflows have been driven by investment in Japan and the exchange rate, while the geographic distribution of such investment has been influenced by foreign economic conditions. We also find that FDI outflows have a temporary impact on exports but a permanent effect on imports. We find no evidence that behavior with respect to East Asia differs from that with respect to North America or Europe.

Download or read book Regionalism and Rivalry written by Jeffrey A. Frankel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Japan's newfound economic power leads to increased political power, there is concern that Japan may be turning East Asia into a regional economic bloc to rival the U.S. and Europe. In Regionalism and Rivalry, leading economists and political scientists address this concern by looking at three central questions: Is Japan forming a trading bloc in Pacific Asia? Does Japan use foreign direct investment in Southeast Asia to achieve national goals? Does Japan possess the leadership qualities necessary for a nation assuming greater political responsibility in international affairs? The authors contend that although intraregional trade in East Asia is growing rapidly, a trade bloc is not necessarily forming. They show that the trade increase can be explained entirely by factors independent of discriminatory trading arrangements, such as the rapid growth of East Asian economies. Other chapters look in detail at cases of Japanese direct investment in Southeast Asia and find little evidence of attempts by Japan to use the power of its multinational corporations for political purposes. A third group of papers attempt to gauge Japan's leadership characteristics. They focus on Japan's "technology ideology," its contributions to international public goods, international monetary cooperation, and economic liberalization in East Asia.

Download or read book Japanese Direct Foreign Investments written by Karl Boger and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1989-08-22 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's remarkable penetration into foreign markets in industries ranging from automobiles to semiconductors has fueled great interest in Japanese foreign investment. Japan now exerts tremendous influence over the international economy. Backed by statistics and theory, this definitive work examines Japanese direct foreign investments around the world and across various industries since World War II. It explores Japan's overseas acquisitions in all corners of the globe, the internationalization of its financial services industry and the roots of its foreign investment including the rebuilding of its economy after World War II and its success in technological domination of key industries. The study begins with a general theoretical and historical overview of Japanese overseas investment. It then focuses on individual regions and countries in the world including the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Ocean region. Particular attention is addressed to the United States and Southeast Asia, the areas where most of Japan's overseas investments are concentrated. This work will be of interest to economists, businessmen, historians, scholars, and students of international business or economics. Businessmen and economists will find this book especially valuable with its leads on Japanese economic and corporate success.
