Book Cancer Treatment and Survival Site Specific Registries in Japan

Download or read book Cancer Treatment and Survival Site Specific Registries in Japan written by Watanabe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-11-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japan, the diagnosis and effects of treatment of cancer patients is tracked and evaluated through a registry of the patients. Rather than a demographic or population-based tracking, the Japanese medical community has developed a number of site-specific cancer registries. The registries are administered by the research group or association of medical specialists for the site-specific area. Their promotion of the registries has resulted in national improvements in the diagnosis, surgical techniques, and treatments for cancer. This monograph provides, from each site-specific registration committee, a description, history, number of patients and their clinical characteristics, survival rates by TNM stage, and their time trends in relation to the development of diagnostic methods and elaboration of new treatment. Through greater knowledge has come greater understanding for the medical community of the current diagnostic and therapeutic results for many Japanese cancer patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mutagenic Effects of Environmental Contaminants investigates the mutagenic consequences of environmental contaminants, such as pesticides, industrials, food additives, drugs, and biologicals, as well as the possible relationships between mutagenesis and carcinogenesis. It describes the monitoring of chemical mutagens in the environment and the ways that genetic mutations cause disease in humans. Organized into 14 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the current burden of human genetic disease and the biochemical mechanisms of mutation. It then discusses practical and feasible methods that use a variety of organisms to screen potential mutagenic agents, increased mutation rates in human populations, mutagens that are currently used commercially, and the interrelationships between mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and teratogenicity. The reader is also introduced to genetic toxicology, detection of chemically induced mutations in experimental animals, and chromosome and somatic mutations in humans. This book is a valuable resource for scientists, policymakers, and administrators of environmental programs.

Download or read book Morris Hepatomas written by Harold Morris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1960, Dr. Van R. Potter and Dr. Henry Pitot (at McCardle Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin), Dr. Tetsuo Ono (then at McCardle Laboratory and now at the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo, Japan) and Dr. Harold P. Morris (then at the National Cancer Institute and now at Howard University, Washington, D. C. ) decided that an experimental cancer model would be an invaluable tool to examine neoplastic changes in cells. Since they were study ing the various highly specific metabolic processes which are unique to liver tissues, they determined that a transplantable liver cancer model would be the ideal system to work with. This system would provide for comparison of normal liver tissue of the non-tumor bear ing animal, the tumor bearing animal's (host) liver and the liver cancer. Dr. Morris undertook a series of rat studies employing several chemicals known to cause liver cancer. Soon the first Morris hepatomas (#3683, 3924A, 5123) were being studied by several labs. During the next 18 years, Dr. Morris developed and transplanted numerous strains of hepatomas of which no two were identical. These tumors ranged from the very slowly-growing, highly differentiated cancer tissues, e. g. , 96l8A which is a diploid tumor containing gly cogen and a "nearly normal" complement of enzymes, to a large group of rapidly-growing, poorly differentiated cancer tissues, e. g.

  • Author : Mitsumasa Nishi
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 4431683283
  • Pages : 451 pages

Download or read book Gastric Cancer written by Mitsumasa Nishi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastric cancer is still the most common cause of cancer death in the world, although in most countries, with the notable exception of the United States, its incidence is slowly declining. In statistical terms, gastric cancer is therefore the most formidable of cancer types, and its control is a pressing issue. Recent evidence indicates that the conversion of normal cells to so-called "clinical cancer" is the prerequisite for a multistage process which is intimately associated with an accumulation of multiple gene alterations including both oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes. Gastric cancer is no exception, in that it reveals multiple gene changes whose scenario differs, depending on their occurrence in intestinal-type or diffuse-type gastric cancers. This book was planned for publication by the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer in order to shed light on basic research and clinical practice in gastric cancer. The individual chapters, written by a variety of experts, contain numerous new topics related to all aspects of the disease, including epidemiology, experimental carcinogenesis, pathology, biology, diagnosis, and treatment. It is hoped that this book will be of use in basic research, pathological diagnosis, early detection, and therapy of gastric cancer. We would like to thank the staff of Springer-Verlag Tokyo for the excellent technical production.
