Book Trade and Investment Relations Among the United States Canada and Japan

Download or read book Trade and Investment Relations Among the United States Canada and Japan written by Robert Mitchell Stern and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989-11-03 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic futures of the United States, Canada, and Japan are tightly linked by the extremely powerful trade network these nations share. Yet because of trade and domestic policies aimed at preserving economic and, some argue, cultural integrity, there has at times been considerable friction among the three nations. Much of the recent trade animus of the U.S. has been aimed Japan, the country with the largest trade surplus with the United States. Canada, the largest trade partner of the U.S., maintains fiscal policies which resemble those of Japan, but has not been the focus of similar concern. Since the actions of each nation reverberate throughout the network, a full and accurate understanding of these complex relations will be essential if ongoing trade negotiations, policymaking, and international relations are to be constructive. The papers in this volume were developed from a conference that addressed the need to discover which structural determinants and policies shape the close economic ties among these nations. Leading experts on trade and macroeconomics from all three countries examine disproportionate saving rates, exchange rate volatility, varying industrial policies and levels of financial innovation, the effects of present tax policies and proposed reforms, and the dynamism of major Pacific nations and the leadership role Japan may play in U.S. relations with that region. Several important conclusions are reached by the contributors. They assert that Japan's trade barriers are relatively low overall and are comparable to those maintained by the United States and Canada, and that divergent fiscal policies have been the major source of macroeconomic imbalances between the United States and other major countries in the 1980s. They also conclude that current trade imbalances may persist for some time. The analyses offered here are likely to prove influential in future policymaking and will be of interest to a wide audience, including academic economists, government officials, and students of theoretical and policy issues of international trade, investment, and finance.

Book Corporations and International Lawmaking

Download or read book Corporations and International Lawmaking written by Stephen Tully and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical model of international lawmaking posits governments as exclusively authoritative actors. However, commercially-oriented entities have long been protagonists within the prevailing international legal order, concluding contracts and resolving disputes with governments. Is the international legal personality of corporations undergoing further qualitative transformations ? Corporations influence the State practice constitutive of custom and create, refashion or challenge normative rules. The corporate willingness to fill legal lacunae where governments do not exercise their full regulatory responsibility is also observable through resort to alternative legal mechanisms. Corporations moreover contribute directly to treaty negotiations and occupy crucial roles during subsequent implementation. Indeed, an analysis of the access conditions and participatory modalities for non-State actors could support a right to participate under common international procedural law. Their substantive contributions are also evident when corporations participate in enforcing international law against governments through national courts, diplomatic protection (including the WTO) and arbitration (including NAFTA). However, the practice of intergovernmental organizations reveals several challenges including managing corporate interaction with developing country governments and other non-State actors. Acknowledging corporate contributions also has important implications for national regulatory autonomy, the ability of governments to mediate contested policy issues, the democratic legitimacy of the contemporary lawmaking process and an understanding of consent as the underlying basis for international law.

Book Japanese Manufacturing Investment in Europe

Download or read book Japanese Manufacturing Investment in Europe written by Roger Strange and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese manufacturing investment in the European Community has grown dramatically over the last twenty years. At first, instances of investment were few, concentrated in a small number of industrial sectors. But since the mid-1980's there has been a surge of investment in a much wider range of industries. This volume details the growth of Japanese manufacturing investment in Europe in fourteen industrial sectors. The impact of Japanese competition and direct investment on European industries is considered in the context of the emergence of the three major trading blocs: the United States, Japan and the EC. Roger Strange concludes by making important policy recommendations, and arguing for the need for a new theoretical framework for assessing the political economy of foreign direct investment.

Book Japanese Direct Foreign Investments

Download or read book Japanese Direct Foreign Investments written by Karl Boger and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1989-08-22 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's remarkable penetration into foreign markets in industries ranging from automobiles to semiconductors has fueled great interest in Japanese foreign investment. Japan now exerts tremendous influence over the international economy. Backed by statistics and theory, this definitive work examines Japanese direct foreign investments around the world and across various industries since World War II. It explores Japan's overseas acquisitions in all corners of the globe, the internationalization of its financial services industry and the roots of its foreign investment including the rebuilding of its economy after World War II and its success in technological domination of key industries. The study begins with a general theoretical and historical overview of Japanese overseas investment. It then focuses on individual regions and countries in the world including the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Ocean region. Particular attention is addressed to the United States and Southeast Asia, the areas where most of Japan's overseas investments are concentrated. This work will be of interest to economists, businessmen, historians, scholars, and students of international business or economics. Businessmen and economists will find this book especially valuable with its leads on Japanese economic and corporate success.

Book Trade Finance and Developing Countries

Download or read book Trade Finance and Developing Countries written by Sheila Page and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1990 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents a detailed analysis of the past performance of a large range of developing countries. They are used to examine the opportunities facing other countries in the 1990s. Analysis of the successes of the Newly Industrialising countries has always emphasized the important role of exports-a view reinforced by the problems faced by those countries who have pursued inward-looking strategies and by the impact of the debt crisis in the 1980s. The author shows how national policies have not simply responded to external opportunities, but have used them and adapted their own strategies to international conditions. She also demonstrates the increasing importance of financing constraints. The reduction in the availability of external finance and the restrictions on the type available places a serious limitation on the choice of trade policies and therefore on industrial and development strategies that can be pursued.
