Book Corporate Financing and Governance in Japan

Download or read book Corporate Financing and Governance in Japan written by Takeo Hoshi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-01-31 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Takeo Hoshi and Anil Kashyap examine the history of the Japanese financial system, from its nineteenth-century beginnings through the collapse of the 1990s that concluded with sweeping reforms. Combining financial theory with new data and original case studies, they show why the Japanese financial system developed as it did and how its history affects its ongoing evolution. The authors describe four major periods within Japan's financial history and speculate on the fifth, into which Japan is now moving. Throughout, they focus on four questions: How do households hold their savings? How is business financing provided? What range of services do banks provide? And what is the nature and extent of bank involvement in the management of firms? The answers provide a framework for analyzing the history of the past 150 years, as well as implications of the just-completed reforms known as the "Japanese Big Bang." Hoshi and Kashyap show that the largely successful era of bank dominance in postwar Japan is over, largely because deregulation has exposed the banks to competition from capital markets and foreign competitors. The banks are destined to shrink as households change their savings patterns and their customers continue to migrate to new funding sources. Securities markets are set to re-emerge as central to corporate finance and governance.

Book Illusions of Liberalization

Download or read book Illusions of Liberalization written by Benn Steil and published by Chatham House (Formerly Riia). This book was released on 1995 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapidly rising share prices in the 1980s served to hide significant inefficiencies in the Japanese securities markets, many of which derive directly from the operation of the regulatory system. While these inefficiencies are becoming increasingly costly and transparent in the more sober market environment of the 1990s, the regulatory structure at the heart of the problem remains fundamentally untouched. The European Community, meanwhile, is working to construct a Community-wide regulatory umbrella for securities markets, and is in danger of succumbing to the most damaging tendency of the Japanese authorities. This is to view the markets not in terms of their ultimate services, but rather in terms of the interests of incumbent service providers. Directives which are supposed to facilitate free and open cross-border competition are instead being used to protect Member State producer interests.

Book Scarcity Effects of Quantitative Easing on Market Liquidity Evidence from the Japanese Government Bond Market

Download or read book Scarcity Effects of Quantitative Easing on Market Liquidity Evidence from the Japanese Government Bond Market written by Mr.Fei Han and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative easing could improve market liquidity through many channels such as relaxing bank funding constraints, increasing risk appetite, and facilitating trades. However, it can also reduce market liquidity when the increase in the central bank’s holdings of certain securities leads to a scarcity of those securities and hence higher search costs in the market. Using security-level data from the Japanese government bond (JGB) market, this paper finds evidence of the scarcity (flow) effects of the Bank of Japan (BOJ)’s JGB purchases on market liquidity. Moreover, we also find evidence that such scarcity effects could dominate other effects when the share of the BOJ’s holdings exceeds certain thresholds, suggesting that the flow effects may also depend on the stock.
