Book Japan s Options for the 1980s

Download or read book Japan s Options for the 1980s written by Radha Sinha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan’s economic success since the 1950s created a range of serious domestic and international problems which threaten the stability of the country. Within Japan at the start of the 1980s there was a strong mood on the right for remilitarization to give the nation the super-power status her economic performance justified. Outside Japan, there was increasing pressure from the West to make her conform to Western strategic interests. Against the background of these crucial issues the book analyzes the economic, political and military options open to Japan. Focussing on the interconnecting themes of foreign harassment and domestic economic disorder, the author points out many areas of similarity between Japan of the 1930s and Japan of the 1980s.

Book excerpt: An international team of ten specialists in Japanese and American foreign relations address the crucial question: what role should Japan play in international affairs? This question has not found a fully satisfactory answer since the forced opening to foreign contacts in the mid-nineteenth century. Having copied foreign models and achieved a series of stunning successes -- and some failures -- in many aspects of private and public life, Japan today stands at a pinnacle of economic power and affluence. Despite this, both economics and politics are undergoing major strains and changes during the 1990s, and the quest for true internationalization is fraught with problems and only partially fulfilled. This book is a joint project of the American University in Washington and Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto.

Book Japan s Stagnant Nineties

Download or read book Japan s Stagnant Nineties written by Mr.Ramana Ramaswamy and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses a vector autoregression (VAR) approach to identify the driving forces of the growth slowdown in Japan during the 1990s. Negative shocks to both residential and nonresidential investment are shown to have been important determinants of the slowdown. Despite the collapse in asset prices, negative shocks to private consumption were relatively small. A surprising conclusion is that trends in public consumption had a dampening impact on activity in the 1990s. The VAR estimations do not support the counterfactual conjecture that activity in Japan would have been significantly weaker in the absence of the expansionary shift in fiscal policy.

Book excerpt: Under the new world order, Japan's international business activity is being organised through tight networks that link banks, industrial corporations and trading companies and that are displacing onto Asia their main domestic problems. Since the US and Europe are refusing to fulfil that function, Japan is forming a new three-zone strategy in which production, marketing and finance are tightly coordinated within each zone but in which there is also an overall shift away from North America and Europe towards Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of Japan's foreign policy at the time of great transformation-cum-transition after World War II is analysed and considered from two angles: a Japan adrift, with an opportunistic, short-term pragmatism, and a Japan determinedly and tenaciously steadfast to its national interests. Inoguchi provides fascinating and balanced accounts of Japan's foreign policy at a time when its premises are seemingly undermined and its domestic and international underpinnings eroding. The emergence of the concept of 'comprehensive security' in Japanese national security policy led to the creation of a Ministerial Council on Comprehensive Security. This body was expected to provide the impetus for a more co-ordinated, comprehensive and rational approach to Japan's security needs than was evident in the past.
