Book Winter of Frozen Dreams

Download or read book Winter of Frozen Dreams written by Karl Harter and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of Barbara Hoffman is a tale of money, men, and the Madison, Wisconsin, massage parlor where a biochemistry major turned into a murderer. On a freezing Christmas morning, a distraught young man named Gerald Davies led Madison police to Tomahawk Ridge, where they found the body of Harold Berge, naked, bloody, and beaten. Davies insisted that he hadn’t killed the man, but that he and his fiancée had simply buried the corpse in a snowbank. The investigation confirmed that the victim had died in the apartment of Barbara Hoffman—a young woman who had dropped out of the University of Wisconsin and had worked at Jan’s Health Studio, a local massage parlor. She and Davies, whom she met at Jan’s, had recently become engaged. The circumstances were suspicious already. But when the police discovered that Berge was Hoffman’s ex-lover, that he had signed over his house and an insurance policy to her—and that Davies had also made her his beneficiary—they began to suspect that Davies might also be in danger . . . The police kept him under watch, but eventually had to stop surveillance. Soon after, Davies turned up dead in his bathtub, a Valium bottle nearby, in an apparent suicide. But, an accomplished student of chemistry, Hoffman knew how tricky it could be to detect cyanide poisoning. It would take a dedicated effort by detectives to sort out the truth about the highly intelligent masseuse, her work in the shadowy local sex trade, and the real circumstances that led two of her clients to their deaths. Winter of Frozen Dreams is the full story of the case that would become a sensational televised trial and inspire a film of the same name starring Thora Birch. It’s a “snappy read” by an author with a “talent for sleuthy description and psychological insight” (Kirkus Reviews).

Book Dreams of Peace and Freedom

Download or read book Dreams of Peace and Freedom written by Jay Winter and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the monstrous projects of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and others in the twentieth century, the idea of utopia has been discredited. Yet, historian Jay Winter suggests, alongside the “major utopians” who murdered millions in their attempts to transform the world were disparate groups of people trying in their own separate ways to imagine a radically better world. This original book focuses on some of the twentieth-century’s “minor utopias” whose stories, overshadowed by the horrors of the Holocaust and the Gulag, suggest that the future need not be as catastrophic as the past. The book is organized around six key moments when utopian ideas and projects flourished in Europe: 1900 (the Paris World's Fair), 1919 (the Paris Peace Conference), 1937 (the Paris exhibition celebrating science and light), 1948 (the Universal Declaration of Human Rights), 1968 (moral indictments and student revolt), and 1992 (the emergence of visions of global citizenship). Winter considers the dreamers and the nature of their dreams as well as their connections to one another and to the history of utopian thought. By restoring minor utopias to their rightful place in the recent past, Winter fills an important gap in the history of social thought and action in the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic explores the connections between science and art, the process of creativity, and ultimately the fragility of human existence. “A magical, metaphysical realm ... Captivating, enchanting, delightful.” —The New York Times Einstein’s Dreams is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by Albert Einstein in 1905, about time, relativity and physics. As the defiant but sensitive young genius is creating his theory of relativity, a new conception of time, he imagines many possible worlds. In one, time is circular, so that people are fated to repeat triumphs and failures over and over. In another, there is a place where time stands still, visited by lovers and parents clinging to their children. In another, time is a nightingale, sometimes trapped by a bell jar. Now translated into thirty languages, Einstein’s Dreams has inspired playwrights, dancers, musicians, and painters all over the world. In poetic vignettes, it explores the connections between science and art, the process of creativity, and ultimately the fragility of human existence.

Book excerpt: The #1 bestselling book on work life balance. It's time. Time to reclaim your life. Time to reclaim your potential. Time to start thriving, not just surviving. The traditional Bucket List is outdated. In today’s fast-paced world, simply writing down fleeting wishes isn't enough. You need a strategic, structured approach to turn your aspirations into actionable plans and make your dreams come true within the next 6-18 months. This book reveals the approaches that powered great achievements like Elon Musk building Tesla, the Apollo 11 moon landing, and Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition, demonstrating how these stories and more all use the same concepts and principles that form the backbone of the Dreams List method. Imagine if you could turn an Apollo 11-level of dream into reality and design a life that aligns with your deepest desires. In just three years, with an income no higher than that of a police officer, nurse, or entry-level accountant, Alex Funk did this. He took 86 flights, bought two investment properties, completed a marathon on a treadmill, medaled in a bodybuilding contest, and crossed off 252 other dreams from his list—all before his 23rd birthday. This journey started in 2020, amidst the global pandemic, when he made the unconventional choice to drop out of college and return to his thousand-person hometown. Crafting this remarkable life wasn’t a product of financial leverage but of this revolutionary concept: The Dreams List. The Dreams List is a powerful tool for articulating and pursuing deeply resonant goals. It's not just about listing dreams; it's a methodical approach to breaking down lofty aspirations into manageable, actionable steps. Book Analyzing a Long Dream Series

Download or read book Analyzing a Long Dream Series written by Michael Schredl and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing a Long Dream Series provides an extraordinary insight into the richness and variability of dreams, considering over 12,000 dreams that have been recorded for more than 30 years. Internationally recognized dream scientist Michael Schredl opens up his own personal dream series, offering a unique window into the interplay between waking life and dreaming. The book considers a huge range of dream topics, including family, friends, schoolmates, colleagues, erotic dreams, alongside the appearance of everyday objects. It also discusses rarer themes such as pain perception, temperature perception, and typical dreams about toilets, exams, and teeth. As the author is both the dreamer and the researcher, questions like why we dream about topics we have never experienced in waking life – for example, about the pain of being shot in the stomach – can be addressed, shedding light on the creative nature of dreams. The in-depth analyses provided in this book attempt to answer the field's most profound questions: why do we dream every night, and why do we dream in such creative ways about the issues that are important to us in waking life? The dreams analyzed question existing dream theories such as simulation theories, and the author proposes a function of recalled dreams for creative problem solving and provides ideas for future research. This fascinating book is an essential read for all dream researchers and students of the psychology of dreams.

From hope, to love, to doom, to a new beginning, herein lies a broad range of insight from a whole new perspective. The prophecies are simple and straight forward, written from a first-hand perspective.
