  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-01-30
  • ISBN : 1351187295
  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Film and Modern American Art written by Katherine Manthorne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the 1890s and the 1930s, movie going became an established feature of everyday life across America. Movies constituted an enormous visual data bank and changed the way artist and public alike interpreted images. This book explores modern painting as a response to, and an appropriation of, the aesthetic possibilities pried open by cinema from its invention until the outbreak of World War II, when both the art world and the film industry changed substantially. Artists were watching movies, filmmakers studied fine arts; the membrane between media was porous, allowing for fluid exchange. Each chapter focuses on a suite of films and paintings, broken down into facets and then reassembled to elucidate the distinctive art–film nexus at successive historic moments.

Book Hollywood on the Hudson

Download or read book Hollywood on the Hudson written by Richard Koszarski and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Edison invented his motion picture system in New Jersey in the 1890s, and within a few years most American filmmakers could be found within a mile or two of the Hudson River. They planted themselves here because they needed the artistic and entrepreneurial energy that D. W. Griffith realized New York had in abundance. But as the going rate for land and labor skyrocketed and their business grew more industrialized, most of them moved out. The way most historians explain it, the role of New York in the development of American film ends here. In Hollywood on the Hudson, Richard Koszarski rewrites an important part of the history of American cinema. During the 1920s and 1930s, film industry executives had centralized the mass production of feature pictures in a series of gigantic film factories scattered across Southern California, while maintaining New York as the economic and administrative center. But as Koszarski reveals, many writers, producers, and directors also continued to work here, especially if their independent vision was too big for the Hollywood production line. East Coast filmmakers-Oscar Micheaux, Rudolph Valentino, Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur, Paul Robeson, Gloria Swanson, Max Fleischer, and others-quietly created a studio system without back-lots, long-term contracts or seasonal production slates. They substituted "newsreel photography" for Hollywood glamour, targeted niche audiences instead of middle-American families, ignored accepted dramatic conventions, and pushed the boundaries of motion picture censorship. Rebellious and unconventional, they saw the New York studios as laboratories, not factories-and used them to pioneer the development of new technologies (from talkies to television), new genres, new talent, and ultimately, an entirely new vision of commercial cinema.

Book Colonial America on Film and Television

Download or read book Colonial America on Film and Television written by Bertil O. Österberg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early history of American settlement, pioneering, and independence is marked by fascinating characters and events often shrouded in legend. Filmmakers have sought to capture these characters, as diverse as Daniel Boone, Francis Marion and Pocahontas, and events, as disparate as the Lost Colony, the Boston Tea Party and the French and Indian War. This comprehensive filmography provides production information and commentary on all films and television episodes set during the years between the first settlements in the future United States and the fledgling country's War of 1812 with Britain. Films are arranged alphabetically, and a detailed introduction provides a thorough overview of the period, with references to films chronicling specific events.
