Book Playing from the Rough

Download or read book Playing from the Rough written by Jimmie James and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of one man’s quest to become the first person to play each of America’s 100 greatest golf courses in a single year, an odyssey that brings him face to face with the gulf between his impoverished childhood in the Jim Crow South and the successful executive he became. When he set out to play each of Golf Digest’s America’s 100 greatest golf courses in one year, Jimmie James knew he was attempting the impossible. But then again, he’d spent his entire life defying the odds. James was born invisible. His birth certificate, long since filed away in some clerk’s office in East Texas, recorded facts about him that were deemed most relevant in the late 1950s: “colored” and “illegitimate.” His great-great-grandmother was enslaved, and his early life was confined by the privation and segregation of the late Jim Crow-era South. Four decades later—having put himself through an HBCU and determinedly risen through the executive ranks at ExxonMobil—he embarked on his journey to play the 100 greatest golf courses in the United States. In a single year. From the first tee at Augusta National, the distance between the world he grew up in and the world of extreme privilege to which he’d now managed to gain access was impossible to ignore. Playing from the Rough is a remarkable memoir of race, class, family, and the power of perseverance, as James braids his love of golf with reflections on the path that took him from childhood poverty to the most exclusive and opulent golf courses in America.

Book America s Gift to Golf

Download or read book America s Gift to Golf written by Herbert Warren Wind and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dean of American golf writers pays tribute to the nation’s greatest tournament Over the course of his forty-year career at the New Yorker and Sports Illustrated, Herbert Warren Wind covered the game of golf from many different angles, providing readers with eloquent insights on the iconic courses of Scotland as well as Bing Crosby’s lifelong love affair with the sport. But no aspect of golf was closer to Wind’s heart, or more intimately associated with his name, than the annual Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Course. Recounting Arnold Palmer’s victory in 1958, Wind coined the phrase “Amen Corner” to describe the fateful stretch of golf course including the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the first Augusta National Invitation, held in 1934, Wind eloquently recounted a half-century’s worth of highlights, from Bobby Jones’s original vision of an informal competition between his old friends and the game’s rising stars, to Ben Crenshaw’s impressive defeat of Tom Watson in the 1984 tournament. Full of the grand traditions—including green jackets, purple azaleas, and white jumpsuits—and dramatic moments that have made the Masters the most entertaining of the four major championships, America’s Gift to Golf brings the history of this majestic tournament to vivid life and testifies to the enduring legacy of Herbert Warren Wind.

Book A Golf Story

Download or read book A Golf Story written by Charles Price and published by Triumph Books. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after its original publication in 1986, "A Golf Story" was heralded as one of the classics of golf literature. It is a book that intertwines three immortal subjects--Bobby Jones, Augusta National, and the Masters Tournament--into one compelling narrative. These three stories are inextricably linked; together, they form a fascinating backdrop to an April drama that is unique in the annals of golf and that, like Jones himself, transcends sports. Using firsthand experiences with Augusta National and the Masters Tournament that date back to 1948, Charles Price spent three years weaving together this historic story and, in an unprecedented move, Augusta National opened its guarded archives for his research, thereby making this book the first authorized history of both the club and the tournament.

Book excerpt: This book is about Edward Ted Ray who was born in the village of Gorey, on the east coast of the island of Jersey near Grouville, which was the nursery of many famous golfers, including the legendary Harry Vardon. Ted was one of the biggest stars in professional golf, considered a mighty driver of the golf ball and a prince of putters. He won the Open Championship in 1912, the US Open in 1920, and many other prestigious tournaments in Great Britain and mainland Europe. He played for Great Britain against the USA in 1921 at Gleneagles and in 1926 at Wentworth. He was the player captain of the Great Britain team in the first ever Ryder Cup match of 1927. Ted would also represent England against Scotland on nine occasions in their annual team matches, as well as Englands nonplaying captain in the 1930s. Ted Ray toured the USA, along with Harry Vardon, in 1913 and 1920 to promote and popularize golf in the Americas. He, like many of the greats of the game, is one of the forgotten men of golf. The book endeavors to spotlight a golfer who is now a distant memory and one that has inexplicably never been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Book Be the Pine Be the Ball

  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2018-04-27
  • ISBN : 1984516884
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book Be the Pine Be the Ball written by Paul J. Zingg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the landscapes and memory of golf and examining the games nature and appeal, this collection of seventy-two haiku poems and essays aims to lead readers to a fuller appreciation of the culture and history of golf and a deeper awareness of a players place in the game. Be the Pine, Be the Ball also reveals the compelling beauty and power of haiku, the most popular poetic form in the world. Through the brevity of its style, precise language, and ability to reveal how ordinary moments and elements of our lives are pathways to a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us, haiku can have both a meditative and consequential effect on the reader. A key to the connection between haiku and golf is that both foster powers of concentration and detailed observation with a related reduction of distractions. Both seek to cultivate a more tranquil and disciplined mind and to translate that condition into how a life is lived and a game is played.
