He was one of Prime Minister Michael Manley’s closest confidantes, in and out of power, and he advised every Jamaican premier and prime minister from Norman Manley to Bruce Golding, with only one exception. That one exception resulted in a sidelining that had a blowback that set Jamaica back decades and that sealed his family’s business’s fate. This is a story of race, class, and power in postcolonial Jamaica. This work is a critique of leadership and governance practices, and uses as a reference point some specific practice or set of practices. Thus, in addition to political leaders and the political processes, the justice system, the education system, the private sector, the church have all been included as part of the conversation on how we can lead in more accountable, morally courageous, transparent, and uplifting ways.

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of twelve empowered female leaders in organizations in Kingston, Jamaica, to discover what has contributed to their rise to leadership position. Leadership position was defined as Director, Chief Executive Officer, President, General Manager, or other senior executive position. Five themes emerged from an analysis of the collected data. These themes were used to develop an empowerment model for Jamaican women. The term empowerment may mean different things to different persons. However, irrespective of those differences, at the heart of empowerment is the word power, which plays an integral role in the empowerment process.

It also pays attention to practices devoid of racial content but which equally helped to sustain a society stratified by race and colour, such as voting qualifications. Case studies on the labour market, education, the family and legal system, among other areas, demonstrate the extent to which race and colour shaped social relations in the island in the decades preceding and following independence and argue that racial discrimination was a public secret - everybody knew it took place but few dared to openly discuss or criticise it. The book ends with an examination of race and colour in contemporary Jamaica to show that race and colour have lost little of their power since independence and offers some suggestions to overcome the silence on race to facilitate equality of opportunity for all.
