Download or read book Jamaica written by Kenneth E. Ingram and published by Oxford, England : Clio Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaica is one of a chain of islands -- the West Indian archipelago -- which encircles the Caribbean Sea. Its earliest indigenous people, the Tainos, succumbed to the arrival of western Europeans, inaugurated by the encounter with Columbus in 1494. Spanish rule gave way in 1655 to some 300 years of English colonial rule involving nearly two centuries of plantation slavery. The country finally gained independence in 1962. Jamaica has made some notable contributions in the international arena. Perhaps best known are its contributions in the world of sport, popular music (reggae) and in its development of distinctive forms of dance-theatre and folk music. This wide-ranging volume is a fully revised and updated edition of the work which was first published in 1984.

Download or read book Vere written by William Manning and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third book of William Manning looks back at experiences gained while living in Vere, and includes relevant information during important periods in the history of Jamaica. The Tate & Lyle Corporation of England, which owned The West Indies Sugar Company, operated two sugar making organizations in Jamaica; Frome in Westmoreland, and Monymusk in Vere, Clarendon. Vere was a major producer of cane sugar in Jamaica. The Monymusk group played a major part in the life of people who lived in the area and was an important contributor to social development programs. Vere flourished as long as sugar flourished. Extant to the economic development in Vere, was a unique system of education, where funds from an ancient charitable bequest, provided high school scholarships to a number of nine to eleven year old students, and vocational or technical scholarships to older students who did the Jamaica Local examinations. To be awarded a scholarship, the student was required to be born in Vere or have some family connection to the old parish, which included that part which was annexed to become part of Manchester.
Download or read book The History of Mining and Geological Surveys in Jamaica written by Suresh Bhalai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining and geological survey work in Jamaica goes back several hundred years and was initiated by the Europeans when they colonized the Island. The year 2019 marked 160 years since the first Government-commissioned Geological Survey of Jamaica. This is one of the oldest survey activity of this type in the World! This book seeks to commemorate this heritage. It is one of the first books of its kind examining the evolution of the mineral sector and geological survey work of Jamaica, set in the framework of the Country's history of over 500 years. The Reader will explore a relatively unfamiliar side of the Country's development, linked to popular historical stories that shaped the Nation. The information presented are mostly documented in dated academic literature that are not gauged for a wide audience. This book however, aims to make this information accessible for a wider readership such as students, amateur scientist, non-professionals or anyone who wishes to learn about the rich history and heritage, and the contributions to national development from Europe and much later, North America.
