Book excerpt: I became homeless after I got out of the Army and decided to use that time to walk across America. After a few months of living on the road, I realized that I needed some kind of motivation to keep me going. I then began raising money for different charities, as well as being an advocate for showing the positive effects that being outdoors can have on PTSD. As time went on, I became obsessed with making a positive difference through hiking. Three years later, I had inadvertently crossed the entire country three times. Although it may sound like an altruistic stroll through the park, each day presented itself with new and unforeseen challenges. Besides battling hunger, dangerous wildlife, harsh weather conditions, and loneliness, I also had to deal with the fact that most people were unaware of my good intentions. So, not only do you get to follow along on an epic adventure with all its daily struggles, but my journey also unveils what it was like to be homeless in America without any special treatment. Book Jake Gaither America s Most Famous Black Coach

Download or read book Jake Gaither America s Most Famous Black Coach written by George E. Curry and published by Dodd Mead. This book was released on 1977 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alonzo S. (Jake) Gaither, former head football coach and athletic director of Florida A&M, was named to the Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1975, the first coach of a predominantly black college to be so honored. It was deserved recognition of an incredible career. "I like my boys ag-ile, mo-bile, and hos-tile," Gaither was fond of saying, and apparently they were. In twenty-five years of coaching at Florida A&M, Gaither won 85 percent of his games and never had a losing season. When he retired in 1973, his record of 203-36-4 was better than that of any active coach in the country. Over the years his teams won six national black collegiate championships and every conference title except three - twenty-two out of twenty-five. He also produced at least one All-America player every years except one, and through the years sent over twenty-five of his players to the pros. Gaither was selected small college Coach of the Year three times - by the Associated Press in 1961, by the American Football Coaches Association in 1962, and by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in 1969. In addition he was awarded two of the highest honors given for coaching, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award and the Walter Camp Award. Here, in an absorbing biography of the man who became a football legend, is the story of how he did it. --From the book jacket.

In fact, he's on a mission to convince the American people that they need a new 'tech-savvy" Constitution. According to John's calculations, such a version would be more effective, save billions of dollars in taxes, and could even establish a form of government closer to pure democracy. With the secret help of an ambitious senator and his brilliant chief of staff, Payton starts a movement called 'Reengineering America." The group is dedicated to pressuring Congress to pass a Constitutional Amendment mandating that a second Constitutional Convention rewrite the document. But Payton's unlikely crusade captures the attention of sinister and powerful forces both in and outside the government. Some want to stop him at any cost-while others want to ensure he succeeds for their own nefarious purposes. Unable to distinguish friend from foe, John Payton must ultimately put his fortune- and his life-at risk trying to convince a dubious nation it's time to modernize a 200 year old system of government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This History of the criticism of The Sun Also Rises shows not only how Hemingway's first major novel was received over the decades, but also how different critical modes have dominated different decades, and what, besides tenure, critics of different eras looked for in it. As such, it shows what has interested critics, how they have reinterpreted the novel, and how they have seen the characters playing different roles. Thus the novel becomes a mirror, reflecting not only Paris and Spain in 1925, but us.

Book Key Texts in American Jewish Culture

Download or read book Key Texts in American Jewish Culture written by Jack Kugelmass and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key Texts in American Jewish Culture expands the frame of reference used by students of culture and history both by widening the "canon" of Jewish texts and by providing a way to extrapolate new meanings from well-known sources. Contributors come from a variety of disciplines, including American studies, anthropology, comparative literature, history, music, religious studies, and women's studies. Each provides an analysis of a specific text in art, music, television, literature, homily, liturgy, or history. Some of the works discussed, such as Philip Roth's novel Counterlife, the musical Fiddler on the Roof, and Irving Howe's World of Our Fathers, are already widely acknowledged components of the American Jewish studies canon. Others-such as Bridget Loves Bernie, infamous for the hostile reception it received among American Jews+ may be considered "key texts" because of the controversy they provoked. Still others, such as Joshua Liebman's Piece of Mind and the radio and TV sitcom The Goldbergs, demonstrate the extent to which American Jewish culture and mainstream American culture intermingle with and borrow from each other.

Book The Rise of Central American Film in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book The Rise of Central American Film in the Twenty First Century written by Mauricio Espinoza and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How an overlooked film industry became a cinematic force The first book in English dedicated to the study of Central American film, this volume explores the main trends, genres, and themes that define this emerging industry. The seven nations of the region have seen an unprecedented growth in film production during the twenty-first century with the creation of over 200 feature-length films compared with just one in the 1990s. This volume provides a needed overview of one of the least explored cinemas in the world. In these essays, various scholars of film and cultural studies from around the world provide insights into the continuities and discontinuities between twentieth- and twenty-first-century cinematic production on the Isthmus. They discuss how political, social, and environmental factors, along with new production modes and aesthetics, have led to a corpus of films that delve into issues of the past and present such as postwar memory, failed revolutions, trauma, migration, popular culture, minority populations, and gender disparities. From Salvadoran documentaries to Costa Rican comedies and Panamanian sports films, the movies analyzed here demonstrate the region’s flourishing film industry and the diversity of approaches found within it. The Rise of Central American Film in the Twenty-First Century pays homage to an overlooked cultural phenomenon and shows the importance of regional cinema studies.
