The most important aspect of his work is an attempt to resolve unanswered questions in the existing research about the religiosity-inmate misconduct relationship using a national sample of inmates and rigorous statistical techniques. His basic thesis is that the mixed findings across studies may be attributed to issues concerning selection bias and/or contextual differences in religiosity across facilities. The findings from the studies indicate that selection bias could result in an underestimation of the magnitude of the religiosity-misconduct relationship, but the results fail to support the impact of contextual religiosity effects on misconduct.

Jail and prison ministry is not for the naïve in matters that may sabotage or weaken the intended purpose of those religious volunteers who seek to bring the hope of the gospel into the dark places that are our jails and prisons.

During this study, several men from The Jesus House ministry location were observed and interviewed on the lives they now lead after getting saved or finding Christ while in prison and being released to a faith-based aftercare facility. This study examined the mission and vision leaders of this ministry believed while interviewing participants and staff about their personal stories, and why they chose to help ex-offenders reintegrate into society. Furthermore, this study investigated the current rehabilitation programming to see where Christian programming can be integrated as a model to aid in the rehabilitation and re-entry of prisoners. Another part of the study examined the structure of this program to see how it has become successful in changing the lives of many returning citizens. The main questions this study sought to explore are: What are the common reasons for recidivism? How did The Jesus House help to change these men’s lives? What program elements were most effective in life transformation? Lastly, how can this program help to reduce recidivism as a model for other programs? The purpose of this ethnographic study was to see if a relationship exists between finding Christ in prison and not becoming a repeat offender. By examining the lives of former prisoners, it helped to determine a framework upon which to build a religious model of re-entry in modern American society. Drawing from three years of on-site research, this book utilizes survey analysis along with life-history interviews of inmates and staff to explore the history, purpose, and functioning of the Inmate Minister program at Louisiana State Penitentiary (aka "Angola"), America’s largest maximum-security prison. This book takes seriously attributions from inmates that faith is helpful for "surviving prison" and explores the implications of religious programming for an American corrections system in crisis, featuring high recidivism, dehumanizing violence, and often draconian punishments. A first-of-its-kind prototype in a quickly expanding policy arena, Angola’s unique Inmate Minister program deploys trained graduates of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in bi-vocational pastoral service roles throughout the prison. Inmates lead their own congregations and serve in lay-ministry capacities in hospice, cell block visitation, delivery of familial death notifications to fellow inmates, "sidewalk counseling" and tier ministry, officiating inmate funerals, and delivering "care packages" to indigent prisoners. Life-history interviews uncover deep-level change in self-identity corresponding with a growing body of research on identity change and religiously motivated desistance. The concluding chapter addresses concerns regarding the First Amendment, the dysfunctional state of U.S. corrections, and directions for future research.

In spite of the fact that religious thinking and activity have been a part of the American correctional system from its inception, very little has been written about how Christians ought to exercise their faith in prison. The tradition has been for chaplains and volunteers to come into the institutions and provide services for the inmates creating a "take it or leave it" approach to ministry. Meanwhile, the Bible calls all Christians to be active in exercising their faith by doing the work of ministry together. These facts are aligned to strongly suggest that an evaluation of the current state of affairs be taken and that corrective measures be suggested and applied. This project suggests that one way to equip incarcerated men and women to better function as members of an active community of faith is by training them to read, pray, and apply significant passages of the Bible together. the focal passage for this study is Ephesians 5:1-21, and the correctional setting is the Satellite Prison Camp of the Federal Medical Center, Carswell -- a federal female prison in Fort Worth, Texas. The project intends to transform the Christian community by challenging the ladies to become more than a collection of individuals, who simply gather to hear the Word; they are challenged to accomplish it as the body of Christ present in the institution.

In Prison Religion, law and religion scholar Winnifred Fallers Sullivan takes up these and other important questions through a close examination of a 2005 lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a faith-based residential rehabilitation program in an Iowa state prison. Americans United for the Separation of Church and State v. Prison Fellowship Ministries, a trial in which Sullivan served as an expert witness, centered on the constitutionality of allowing religious organizations to operate programs in state-run facilities. Using the trial as a case study, Sullivan argues that separation of church and state is no longer possible. Religious authority has shifted from institutions to individuals, making it difficult to define religion, let alone disentangle it from the state. To get the help I needed while in jail gave me hope not only for me but also for those who may be reading this to get help from the trap of sexual addiction. The purpose of these journals is to inspire them that God is not only real, but he is also a loving God and will help them change if they are willing to do so, and that there is actually a system of incarceration, called right living community, as a rehabilitation approach to serving a sentence rather than just doing hard time. I am hoping that maybe, just maybe, that anyone reading this can be averted from committing a senseless sexual crime against another because they now have hope and can work up the courage to get the help they need. Finally, this book is also for any victim of sexual offences committed against them so that they can receive inner healing and possibly even work up the ability to forgive their perpetrator for their horrendous acts. I have discovered that forgiveness sets the one doing the forgiving free emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, more so than the one being forgiven. These journals also show that there is a road map to getting specific help; the fact that proper counseling; good cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) courses; support groups such as AA, NA, SAA, and Celebrate Recovery, and even taking an amazing course developed by my chaplain that is called Spiritual Perspective on Sexuality as a means to receiving better emotional wholeness and well-being, making better decisions and developing better thinking patterns. Be set free. Receive healing. Experience transformation. Watch miracles flow!
