Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God, Sexuality and the Self is a new venture in systematic theology. Sarah Coakley invites the reader to re-conceive the relation of sexual desire and the desire for God and - through the lens of prayer practice - to chart the intrinsic connection of this relation to a theology of the Trinity. The goal is to integrate the demanding ascetical undertaking of prayer with the recovery of lost and neglected materials from the tradition and thus to reanimate doctrinal reflection both imaginatively and spiritually. What emerges is a vision of human longing for the triune God which is both edgy and compelling: Coakley's théologie totale questions standard shibboleths on 'sexuality' and 'gender' and thereby suggests a way beyond current destructive impasses in the churches. The book is clearly and accessibly written and will be of great interest to all scholars and students of theology.

Book excerpt: The IRA’s spectacular 1983 breakout from the Maze Prison was the biggest jailbreak in UK penal history. It was the culmination of a long and valiant tradition of escape bids by Irish republican prisoners, who saw it as their moral duty to escape, attempting to do so in increasingly daring and audacious ways. Spanning the period 1865–1983, this collection features escapes on land, air and sea, including bomb blasts, tunnel escapes, mass breakouts and helicopter airlifts. Jailbreak is a fascinating chronicle, with each chapter featuring a history altering jailbreak, such as Éamon de Valera’s cunning rescue from Lincoln Jail in 1919, the ‘Greatest Escape’ of 112 anti -Treaty prisoners from Newbridge Barracks in 1922 and the epic helicopter airlift of IRA leaders from Mountjoy Prison in 1973. In this hugely entertaining book, James Durney deftly records twenty-three action-packed factual accounts of daring rescues, incredible escape bids and jailbreaks that raised the morale of nationalist Ireland and defied the might of empires and governments.

This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the folklore of World War II, the memory of those heroes who staged 'Great Escapes' from POW camps still endures. But what of the other side of the coin: the villains and jack-the-lads who painstakingly plan their escapes and await their moment at great personal risk? For the first time, Prison Break, tells the stories of all the most ruthless and desperate bad boys and chancers who broke out of gaol and into the annals of criminal history. While no one applauds the escape of a murderer or predator, such men are invariably recaptured within a short time. But in Paul Buck's definitive study of Notorious Prison Escapes, we share the military-style planning and minute-by-minute tension of more 'respected' convicts: those whose major economic or political crimes provide both the criminal support network and the audacious temperament needed to escape from heavy sentences, and maximum security conditions

Download or read book Escape from Dannemora written by Michael Benson and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was one of the biggest crime stories of the decade - two deadly killers, desperate and on the run. After months of planning, Ricky Matt and David Sweat cut, chopped, coerced, and connived their way out of a maximum-security prison in the wilderness of upstate New York and managed to elude police for three weeks, sending the region into lockdown and keeping the entire country on edge. The media called it "a bold escape for the ages," and veteran true-crime writer Michael Benson leads us along the story's every wild path to dig out a tale of adventure, psychology, sex, and brutality. Escape from Dannemora examines the strange case of Joyce Mitchell, the long-time prison employee who had a sexual relationship with at least one of the killers, and who smuggled them tools and aided in the escape, while they cooked up a plan to kill her husband. In the end, Benson looks closely at conditions at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY, a crumbling Gothic pile now under investigation for charges of drug trafficking and brutality.

Book excerpt: “Toward the end of the 20th century, the prevailing prayers of Christians around the world made a profound impact on bringing down the Berlin Wall...However, at the start of a new millennium, the world witnessed on television not the ugly face of communism, but that of Islam as two jets crashed into the World Trade Center. Suddenly Christians across America were asking, ‘What is Islam?’ ‘Who are Muslims?’ and ‘Why would they kill innocent people?’ but more importantly, ‘How do we pray for them?’ F. J. Farrokh addresses this challenging question through this book.” --Dr. Tom White, Executive Director, The Voice of the Martyrs Jailbreak! provides a “prayer mat” for Christian intercessors by weaving together unique historical, theological, and cultural threads of insight about Muslims and Islam. Author F.J. Farrokh gives a spiritual perspective on the following: Beyond the stereotypes, what are Muslims really like? Why is it so difficult for Muslims to come to Christ? How is the Spirit of Islam tied to the Spirit of Humanism? What issues are Muslims wrestling with at the heart level—that are opening them to the Gospel? How can your prayers help bring a great move of God to the Muslim world? Jailbreak! encourages intensified prayer for the Muslim world in the months and years leading up to a significant historical milestone. The year 2010 will mark a 1400-year period since the inception of Islam in 610 A.D. Could that be the year the reign of the Spirit of Islam is destined to come to an end?

Book Icelandic Morphosyntax and Argument Structure

Download or read book Icelandic Morphosyntax and Argument Structure written by Jim Wood and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed study of Icelandic argument structure alternations within a syntactic theory of argument structure. Building on recent theorizing within the Minimalist Program and Distributed Morphology, the author proposes that much of what is traditionally attributed to syntax should be relegated to the interfaces, and adapts the late insertion theory of morphology to semantics. The resulting system forms sound-meaning pairs by generating hierarchical structures that can be translated into morphological representations, on the one hand, and semantic representations, on the other. The syntactic primitives, however, underdetermine both morphophonology and semantics. Without appealing to special stipulations, the theory derives constraints on the external argument of causative-alternation verbs, interpretive restrictions on nominative objects, and the optionally agentive interpretation of verbs denoting self-directed motion.
