Download or read book Jahrbuch Migration und Gesellschaft Yearbook Migration and Society 2022 2023 written by Hans Karl Peterlini and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration is not a state of emergency, but a basic existential experience of humanity. It shapes contemporary societies by challenging established orders, creating transnational spaces beyond national hegemonies, creating new economies, influencing urban and communal ways of life, making inequality and precariousness visible locally and globally. Migration research as a social science does not narrow the focus to 'the migrants', but investigates the conditions for living together and shaping life between ethnicization and pluralization, discrimination and empowerment, division and participation. The Yearbook Migration and Society repeatedly turns the prism of narrative anew. The 2022/2023 edition focuses on the topic »Climate«.

Book Considerations of Territorial Planning Space and Economic Activity in the Global Economy

Download or read book Considerations of Territorial Planning Space and Economic Activity in the Global Economy written by Arias Gomez, Helmuth Yesid and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic activity is embedded in specific surroundings, and ultimately, these conditions determine productivity and efficiency. However, the use of space in the formal models has been troublesome, but in practical activity, the territory is a crucial determinant when the agents make economic decisions. The interaction between economic activity, territory, and space has become a definitive bedrock in theories throughout the history of thought, such as location theory, urban economics, and new economic geography. Considerations of Territorial Planning, Space, and Economic Activity in the Global Economy analyzes the interaction between territory, economic activity, and human development, sharing interesting histories and deploying an extensive set of methodologies, places, and points of view. Covering key topics such as territorial planning, urban economics, and natural resources, this premier reference source is ideal for economists, policymakers, government officials, industry professionals, researchers, academicians, practitioners, scholars, instructors, and students.

Book The Role of Renewable Energy Technology in Holistic Community Development

Download or read book The Role of Renewable Energy Technology in Holistic Community Development written by Alexander Zahnd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-25 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis documents almost twenty years of the author’s work on the development and implementation of a new approach to holistic community development in remote and disadvantaged villages in Nepal. It describes the theoretical basis of the work, the main research activities, and the practical outcomes of the implemented programs. One of the fundamental cornerstones of holistic community development is the provision of appropriate and sustainable solutions for the long-term development of local communities. This requires that people’s own identified needs be recognized and addressed in partnership with them in holistic ways. The author explains the many synergies that result from this holistic approach to community development. Another cornerstone of his approach is to utilise the communities’ locally available renewable resources for long-term sustainable development. One of the key findings of the thesis is that improved access to energy services, such as cooking with a smokeless metal stove in a clean indoor environment, basic indoor lighting, and increased food production and safe food storage (through a greenhouse and a solar drier respectively), need to be at the very heart of any long-term holistic community development project. The thesis demonstrates that tapping into locally available renewable energy resources and converting them, through contextualized and locally manufactured renewable energy technologies, has a central role in long-term holistic community development programs. Such programs are successful because they provide both appropriate technologies and life-changing experiences for the local users involved.

Book excerpt: Through biographical narratives, Claiming Home traces how queer migrant women living in Switzerland navigate often contradictory perspectives on sexuality, gender, and nation. Situated between heteronormative and racialized stereotypes of migrant women on the one hand, and the implicitly white figure of the lesbian on the other, queer migrant women are often rendered ›impossible subjects.‹ Claiming Home maps how they negotiate conflicting loyalties in this field and how they, in their own way, claim a sense of belonging and home.

Book Envisioning the World Mapping and Making the Global

Download or read book Envisioning the World Mapping and Making the Global written by Sandra Holtgreve and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The »global« is permanently made and remade by how it is envisioned in political projects, in language, and in literature. Through a range of case studies, this book shows how practices of referring to the world actually constitute the global in its many facets. It aims to provide a sense in readers of how the global is not something »out there«, but that it is embedded in a wide range of the seemingly »everyday«. The contributions appeal to a readership from a background in Sociology, History, Political Science, Literary Studies, and Social Work.

Book Worldmaking After Empire

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adom Getachew
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-04-28
  • ISBN : 0691202346

Download or read book Worldmaking After Empire written by Adom Getachew and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decolonization revolutionized the international order during the twentieth century. Yet standard histories that present the end of colonialism as an inevitable transition from a world of empires to one of nations—a world in which self-determination was synonymous with nation-building—obscure just how radical this change was. Drawing on the political thought of anticolonial intellectuals and statesmen such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, W.E.B Du Bois, George Padmore, Kwame Nkrumah, Eric Williams, Michael Manley, and Julius Nyerere, this important new account of decolonization reveals the full extent of their unprecedented ambition to remake not only nations but the world. Adom Getachew shows that African, African American, and Caribbean anticolonial nationalists were not solely or even primarily nation-builders. Responding to the experience of racialized sovereign inequality, dramatized by interwar Ethiopia and Liberia, Black Atlantic thinkers and politicians challenged international racial hierarchy and articulated alternative visions of worldmaking. Seeking to create an egalitarian postimperial world, they attempted to transcend legal, political, and economic hierarchies by securing a right to self-determination within the newly founded United Nations, constituting regional federations in Africa and the Caribbean, and creating the New International Economic Order. Using archival sources from Barbados, Trinidad, Ghana, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, Worldmaking after Empire recasts the history of decolonization, reconsiders the failure of anticolonial nationalism, and offers a new perspective on debates about today’s international order.

Book The Production of Consumer Society

Download or read book The Production of Consumer Society written by Ernst Mohr and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a novel quality theory of consumption which treats opulence and self-restraint in consumption styles symmetrically, Ernst Mohr shows how social distance and proximity are communicated by consumption and produced by communication. He positions fringe styles with those of the mainstream in an overall stylistic system of society and analyses their encounters. Rigorously derived, the approach casts fresh light on the cultural and social evolution as well as the business models of the consumer industry. It provides a coherent interdisciplinary access to the aesthetic turn of society that has so far been treated with contradictory paradigms.

Book Understanding the Rights of Nature

Download or read book Understanding the Rights of Nature written by Mihnea Tanasescu and published by Transcript Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rivers, landscapes, whole territories: these are the latest entities environmental activists have fought hard to include in the relentless expansion of rights in our world. But what does it mean for a landscape to have rights? Why would anyone want to create such rights, and to what end? Is it a good idea, and does it come with risks? This book presents the logic behind giving nature rights and discusses the most important cases in which this has happened, ranging from constitutional rights of nature in Ecuador to rights for rivers in New Zealand, Colombia, and India. Mihnea Tanasescu offers clear answers to the thorny questions that the intrusion of nature into law is sure to raise.

Book The Imperial Mode of Living

Download or read book The Imperial Mode of Living written by Ulrich Brand and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Unsustainable Life: Why We Can't Have Everything We Want With the concept of the Imperial Mode of Living, Brand and Wissen highlight the fact that capitalism implies uneven development as well as a constant and accelerating universalisation of a Western mode of production and living. The logic of liberal markets since the 19thCentury, and especially since World War II, has been inscribed into everyday practices that are usually unconsciously reproduced. The authors show that they are a main driver of the ecological crisis and economic and political instability. The Imperial Mode of Living implies that people's everyday practices, including individual and societal orientations, as well as identities, rely heavily on the unlimited appropriation of resources; a disproportionate claim on global and local ecosystems and sinks; and cheap labour from elsewhere. This availability of commodities is largely organised through the world market, backed by military force and/or the asymmetric relations of forces as they have been inscribed in international institutions. Moreover, the Imperial Mode of Living implies asymmetrical social relations along class, gender and race within the respective countries. Here too, it is driven by the capitalist accumulation imperative, growth-oriented state policies and status consumption. The concrete production conditions of commodities are rendered invisible in the places where the commodities are consumed. The imperialist world order is normalized through the mode of production and living.
