Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gillian Jagger s complex and moving sculptures are documented in the Elvehjem s (now Chazen's) catalogue of the first museum-organized exhibition of her work. Installation pieces and works on paper are featured, including Jagger s Matrice a deer carcass found on the road near her studio, stabilized by resin, and suspended with dairy cow stanchions and metal rigging, all hanging above broken stones from a New York quarry. In Rift, suspended fragments of weathered board, coiling barbed wire, rusted cutting tools, bones of a deer, a horse skull, and a mummified cat represented the artist s protest against animal abuse. Jagger incorporated sections of a large tree trunk, cast rocks, a grid, chains, hooks, and pulleys in her major recent work, Spiral. Download or read book Jagger Jones and the Mummy s Ankh written by Malayna Evans and published by Month9Books, LLC.. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This delightful book targets junior high age readers, but it's a treat for all ages... a magical fantasy that will make your heart dance then break then dance again. For lovers of Harry Potter, Jagger Jones is a natural." —The Cat That Reads Blog Jagger Jones is a whiz kid from Chicago's South Side. Ask him anything about Ancient Egypt, and Jagger can fill hours describing all that he knows. But when he and his precocious little sister Aria fall more than three thousand years back in time to the court of Amarna, Egypt, Jagger discovers a truth that rocks his world: books don't teach you everything there is to know. Mummies, pyramids, and cool hieroglyphics make awesome movie props, but the ancient court of Amarna is full of over-sized scorpions, magical amulets, and evil deities determined to scare unwanted visitors away. If Jagger and Aria are to return safely home, they must find nine soul-infested gemstones, defeat an evil general, save the royal family, and figure out how to rescue themselves! Armed only with Jagger's knowledge of history and a few modern objects mined from his pockets and Aria's sparkly purse, the siblings have exactly one week to solve supernatural riddles and rescue the royal family. If they can pull it off, Jagger Jones just might return to Chicago a hero. Includes a discussion guide for middle school readers. "This book would make a great classroom read aloud or book club selection, and since it's the first of a planned trilogy, there's more to look forward to. I, for one, can't wait!" —Kristin Thorsness, author of The Wicked Tree

Download or read book Licentious Worlds written by Julie Peakman and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Licentious Worlds is a history of sexual attitudes and behavior through five hundred years of empire-building around the world. In a graphic and sometimes unsettling account, Julie Peakman examines colonization and the imperial experience of women (as well as marginalized men), showing how women were not only involved in the building of empires, but how they were also almost invariably exploited. Women acted as negotiators, brothel keepers, traders, and peace keepers—but they were also forced into marriages and raped. The book describes women in Turkish harems, Mughal zenanas, and Japanese geisha houses, as well as in royal palaces and private households and onboard ships. Their stories are drawn from many sources—from captains’ logs, missionary reports, and cannibals’ memoirs to travelers’ letters, traders’ accounts, and reports on prostitutes. From debauched clerics and hog-buggering Pilgrims to sexually-confused cannibals and sodomizing samurai, Licentious Worlds takes history into its darkest corners.

Download or read book Evaluating Climate Change Impacts written by Vyacheslav Lyubchich and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluating Climate Change Impacts discusses assessing and quantifying climate change and its impacts from a multi-faceted perspective of ecosystem, social, and infrastructure resilience, given through a lens of statistics and data science. It provides a multi-disciplinary view on the implications of climate variability and shows how the new data science paradigm can help us to mitigate climate-induced risk and to enhance climate adaptation strategies. This book consists of chapters solicited from leading topical experts and presents their perspectives on climate change effects in two general areas: natural ecosystems and socio-economic impacts. The chapters unveil topics of atmospheric circulation, climate modeling, and long-term prediction; approach the problems of increasing frequency of extreme events, sea level rise, and forest fires, as well as economic losses, analysis of climate impacts for insurance, agriculture, fisheries, and electric and transport infrastructures. The readers will be exposed to the current research using a variety of methods from physical modeling, statistics, and machine learning, including the global circulation models (GCM) and ocean models, statistical generalized additive models (GAM) and generalized linear models (GLM), state space and graphical models, causality networks, Bayesian ensembles, a variety of index methods and statistical tests, and machine learning methods. The reader will learn about data from various sources, including GCM and ocean model outputs, satellite observations, and data collected by different agencies and research units. Many of the chapters provide references to open source software R and Python code that are available for implementing the methods.
