Book excerpt: Life is a series of jagged edges, of walking the precipices of choices, falling and getting back up again, opening up the heart to love, and healing from loss. Those Jagged Edges takes you on a poetic journey through love and its many facets, the darkest parts of the soul, and to finding that glimmer of hope somewhere along the way. A compilation of poems that rides the raw waves of life, and sometimes eases, other times, staggers over the losses, the joys, the loves, the relationships, and the challenges faced daily, even moment by moment.

Book Jagged with Love

  • Author : Susanna Childress
  • Publisher : Univ of Wisconsin Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780299212643
  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Jagged with Love written by Susanna Childress and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susanna Childress writes with an earnest desire to understand things physical and things spiritual. What results is a first collection of provocative, honest poetry that explores various human predicaments: a cancer-ridden wife, an explosive father, an infertile couple, various sexual aggressors, a missing girl. Such careful portraiture provokes the reader to consider the complexity of human love: how selfishness, fear, lust and even brutality might coincide with tenderness and loyalty. Ms. Childress's writing is refreshingly naive and clear, her voice essentially inquisitive. She is brave enough to look at the darkness of the world, but she is more courageous to hope.

Book When My Brother Was an Aztec

Download or read book When My Brother Was an Aztec written by Natalie Diaz and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I write hungry sentences," Natalie Diaz once explained in an interview, "because they want more and more lyricism and imagery to satisfy them." This debut collection is a fast-paced tour of Mojave life and family narrative: A sister fights for or against a brother on meth, and everyone from Antigone, Houdini, Huitzilopochtli, and Jesus is invoked and invited to hash it out. These darkly humorous poems illuminate far corners of the heart, revealing teeth, tails, and more than a few dreams. I watched a lion eat a man like a piece of fruit, peel tendons from fascia like pith from rind, then lick the sweet meat from its hard core of bones. The man had earned this feast and his own deliciousness by ringing a stick against the lion's cage, calling out Here, Kitty Kitty, Meow! With one swipe of a paw much like a catcher's mitt with fangs, the lion pulled the man into the cage, rattling his skeleton against the metal bars. The lion didn't want to do it— He didn't want to eat the man like a piece of fruit and he told the crowd this: I only wanted some goddamn sleep . . . Natalie Diaz was born and raised on the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation in Needles, California. After playing professional basketball for four years in Europe and Asia, Diaz returned to the states to complete her MFA at Old Dominion University. She lives in Surprise, Arizona, and is working to preserve the Mojave language.

Book Voice from Afar

Download or read book Voice from Afar written by Tony Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timely poetry collection about peace and war by acclaimed children's poet and author Tony Johnston, stunningly illustrated by Susan Guevara. The poems in this collection present haunting images of war and peace. Set all over the world, from Belfast to Africa to the Middle East, these lyric snapshots show the effects of war on ordinary people, as well as the hope and cautious joy that mark each person's journey to survive. The poems startle with a quiet power: a sister makes up a sweet story for her brother about their house flying away from gunfire; a lentil is wryly asked to fling itself into boiling water so that a desperate family can be fed; a stubborn rosebush blooms, because no matter what it must endure. Full of sweeping, vivid color and emotion, Susan Guevara's accompanying acrylic paintings astonish, move, and provide a fascinating interpretation of and tribute to Tony Johnston's call for peace.

Book Bodies of Poems

  • Author : Lennart Nyberg
  • Publisher : Peter Lang
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9783039113439
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Bodies of Poems written by Lennart Nyberg and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is meaning created by a poem? Through the invisible ideas and thoughts conveyed by the text or through the physical presence of book, paper and print? In Bodies of Poems the author argues that the material properties of poetic texts are meaningful in their own right but often ignored and made invisible in poetry criticism. Through a number of examples ranging from the introduction of print technology in the fifteenth century to late twentieth-century poets such as Adrienne Rich and Seamus Heaney, this study examines the ways in which poems are products of the contemporary state of print technology, legal and social definitions of authors and texts, and culturally and historically determined assumptions about the self and the body. Although indebted to recent innovative work in textual criticism, this book is a pioneering attempt to place the study of poetic texts as material artefacts in a sustained historical narrative.
