Download or read book Women Food and Families written by Nickie Charles and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women, food and families" looks at how women with young families plan, provide, cook and serve food, from daily meals to special occasions. The authors interviewed women from a range of social backgrounds and the result is an account of the role played by food in relationships between women and men, parents and children within contemporary British families. It also reveals the contradictory and often problematic nature of women's own feelings towards food. The authors document the differential distribution of food within families along lines of gender and age and show that social class has a significant impact on diet. They illustrate the way in which practices surrounding food provision both reflect and create social divisions and that food conveys complex messages about power and status, love and anger, inclusion and exclusion.

Book The British Market Hall

Download or read book The British Market Hall written by James Schmiechen and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Britain's market halls--built to replace traditional open-air markets throughout England, Wales, and Scotland--is a tale of exuberant architecture, civic pride, and attempts at social engineering. This book is the first history of the market hall, an immensely important building type that revolutionized the way Britons obtained their consumer goods. James Schmiechen and Kenneth Carls investigate the economic, cultural, political, and social forces that led to the construction of several hundred market buildings in the two centuries after 1750. The market hall was frequently vast in scale, revolutionary in plan, and elaborately ornamented--indeed, it was often the most important architectural statement a proud town might make. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary records, the authors show how municipal authorities used market buildings to improve the supply and distribution of food, convey social ideals, control social and economic behavior, and declare a town's virtues. For the Victorians, Schmiechen and Carls argue, the enormous investment of energy, seriousness, and funding in the market hall reflected a belief that architecture was a primary agent of social reform and improvement. Generously illustrated with more than 180 drawings and photographs, this book also includes a Gazetteer with information about some 300 specific market buildings.

Book Land Shops and Kitchens

Download or read book Land Shops and Kitchens written by Carmen Sarasúa and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses the concept of the food chain from a new perspective, emphasising the historical dimension and conflicts. The inclusion of technology, as a core element, is an original approach to food studies. Thus, technology is related to agricultural production, packaging, transport and storing, wholesale and retailing, catering, and cooking. Also, the so-called middle field, such as political interference, farmers' education and scientific concerns, is addressed. This book pays attention to the history of agriculture, including such varied themes as water supply, fertilisers, land use, greenhouses, and EU policy. It tackles the history of shopping, cooking, health concerns, and fast food eating-places. Technology is not taken for granted, but seen as a field of conflict (action, reaction, and negotiation, perhaps best cast with the opposition fast food versus slow food). The concept of the food chain necessitates to consider all these elements as a whole, and to present them in one, integrated volume.

Book The Subject of Documentary

Download or read book The Subject of Documentary written by Michael Renov and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The documentary, a genre as old as cinema itself, has traditionally aspired to objectivity. Whether making ethnographic, propagandistic, or educational films, documentarians have pointed the camera outward, drawing as little attention to themselves as possible. In recent decades, however, a new kind of documentary has emerged in which the filmmaker has become the subject of the work. Whether chronicling family history, sexual identity, or a personal or social world, this new generation of nonfiction filmmakers has defiantly embraced autobiography. In The Subject of Documentary, Michael Renov focuses on how documentary filmmaking has become an important means for both examining and constructing selfhood. By looking at key figures in documentary filmmaking as well as noncanonical video art and avant-garde artists, Renov broadens the definition of what counts as documentary, and explores the intersection of the personal and political, considering how memory can create a way into asking troubling questions about identity, oppression, and resiliency.Offering historical context for the explosion of personal nonfiction filmmaking in the 1980s and 1990s, Renov analyzes films in which the subjectivity of the filmmaker is expressly defined in relation to political struggle or historical trauma, from Haskell Wexler's Medium Cool to Jonas Mekas's Lost, Lost, Lost. And, looking beyond the traditional documentary, Renov contemplates such nontraditional modes of autobiographical practice as the essay film, the video confession, and the personal Web page.Unique in its attention to diverse expressions of personal nonfiction filmmaking, The Subject of Documentary forges a new understanding of the heightened role and function of subjectivity in contemporary documentary practice.Michael Renov is professor of critical studies at the USC School of Cinema-Television. He is the editor of Theorizing Documentary and the coeditor of Resolutions: Contemporary Video Practices (Minnesota, 1996) and Collecting Visible Evidence (Minnesota, 1999).

Book Cities and Consumption

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Jayne
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2005-12-09
  • ISBN : 1134337787
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Cities and Consumption written by Mark Jayne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-12-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In investigating the mutual and dynamic relationship between urban development and consumption, this book asks: how are cities moulded by consumption, and how is consumption moulded by cities? Consumption stands at the intersection of different spheres of everyday life: between the public and the private, the political and the personal, the individual and the social. It is considered to be a means and motor of social change; as an active ingredient in the construction of space and place, and in constructing subjectivity and social selfhood. Providing a critical review of the ways in which urban development has been conceptualized, this book critiques urban regeneration initiatives, examines ordinary and spectacular consumption, and describes the relationship between consumption and development of the modern and post-modern city. It investigates: consumption and the city consumption and everyday life consumption, cities and identity consumption and urban regeneration. Consumption is understood to have multiple roles as a political, economic and cultural touchstone, and to be an active ingredient in the construction of place and space. Using international case studies and illustrations throughout, this book thoroughly analyzes consumption and the city, and provides a useful text for students of urban studies, sociology and geography.
