Book excerpt: Based on visual inspection, field survey and calculations, Ponderosa Pines Dam is judged to be in poor condition. As the spillway cannot pass the 1/2 PMF without overtopping at less than 1/2 PMF would cause failure which would significantly increase hazard to loss of life downstream, the spillway capacity is seriously inadequate and the facility is rated unsafe, nonemergency. Although there is no visible evidence of structural instability, the erosion of the downstream slope below the outlet pipe and the leakage below the toe of the dam are of concern. Should the observed erosion and leakage remain unchecked, it could, in time, affect the structural integrity of the dam. The invert elevation of the outlet pipe is but 2.1 feet below the spillway crest. There are no means to lower the reservoir level below the present level of the pipe inlet in case of emergency. The maintenance of the dam is limited to mowing grass on the crest and a portion of the upstream slope of the embankment. The balance of the dam is poorly maintained.

Book excerpt: Based on criteria established for these studies, Lake Watawga Dam is judged to be unsafe, nonemergency, because the spillway capacity is seriously inadequate. The recommended Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the size and hazard classification of the dam varies from 1/2 the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) to the PMF. Based on the criteria and the downstream conditions, the selected SDF is the PMF. Based on existing conditions, the spillway will pass about 14 percent of the PMF before overtopping of the dam occurs. It is judged that the dam would fail during the PMF. Failure of the dam would increase the hazard for loss of life downstream. As a whole, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. Deficiencies exist that are considered to be indicative of potential stability problems for the spillway. There is no functional outlet works at the dam. Maintenance at the dam is inadequate.

Book excerpt: Boyertown Reservoir Dam is an earth and rockfill embankment with a concrete corewall and a 20-foot wide, broad-crested, concrete spillway. The upstream portion of the dam is rolled earth embankment; the downstream section is earth and rockfill. The dam is approximately 620 feet long with a maximum height of 55 feet and impounds a reservoir with a normal pool storage capacity of 105 acre-feet. The dam is located on Popodickon Creek and serves as a source of water supply for Boyertown, which is situated approximately 2.5 miles downstream (east) of the dam. The Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for this 'Intermediate' size, 'High' hazard dam is the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The spillway is capable of discharging 37 percent of the PMF without overtopping of the embankment. The spillway is classified as 'Inadequate'. The spillway is not classified as 'Seriously Inadequate' because the depth and duration of overtopping are not considered sufficient to cause a failure of the embankment at 50 percent of the PMF. Based on the visual observations and review of the information obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, Division of Dam Safety, Boyertown Dam is considered to be in good condition.
