Book excerpt: The painter Jacob Duck (c.1600-1667) was active mainly in Utrecht, and his rise to success and recognition paralleled the phenomenon known as the Dutch Golden Age. His style of painting is a unique blend of the humor and eroticism found in the works of the Utrecht Caravaggisti with that of the Haarlem painters of Merry Company scenes. He painted mainly genre themes and was a central contributor to the rise and assimilation of both the Guardroom and the Brothel Scene. His paintings are striking due to their high level of theatricality, humor and sexual innuendo, traits he bestowed upon the following generation of Dutch genre painting. This book is the first ever monograph study of Jacob Duck and includes a complete critical catalogue of all his known works of art.

As with any guide, it can be used in a number of ways and the reader can follow or willfully ignore any of the paths it maps or signposts. Bal's focus for this book is the idea that interdisciplinarity in the humanities - necessary, exciting, serious - must seek its heuristic and methodological basis in concepts rather than its methods. Concepts are not grids to put over an object. The counterpart of any given concept is the cultural text or work or 'thing' that constitutes the object of analysis. No concept is meaningful for cultural analysis unless it helps us to understand the object better on its own terms. Bal offers the reader a sustained theoretical reflection on how to 'do' cultural analysis through a tentative practice of doing just that. This offers a concrete practice to theoretical constructs, and allows the proposed method more accessibility. Kick was active in Amsterdam, the largest and busiest city of the Netherlands, alongside Rembrandt. Simon Kick began painting only at the age of 32, driven to do so only due to the tragic death of his brother-in-law and since the economic situation necessitated it. Nevertheless, he was an excellent painter who focused on painting portraits, histories, and, above all, genre topics. He was one of only ten 17th-century Dutch painters to practice the unique genre formula of the guardroom scene. His guardroom scenes stand out as being more gentrified than others due to the fact that he assimilated in them the elegance of contemporary civic-guard portraits. His figures are particularly striking since they are well-characterized, often depicted in a contemplative mood, and imbued with a strong psychological presence. The fact that he started his career late and passed away at an early age robbed us of a great painter. Critical approaches to genre images have moved past the antiquated notion that they portray uncomplicated 'slices of life,' describing them instead as heavily encoded pictorial essays, laden with symbols that only the most erudite contemporary viewers and modern iconographers could fully comprehend. These essays challenge that limiting binary, revealing a more expansive array of accessible meanings in genre's deft grafting of everyday scenarios with a rich complex of experiential, cultural, political, and religious references.
