Book Jacob and Caleb s Great Adventure

Download or read book Jacob and Caleb s Great Adventure written by Alice Conklin and published by . This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best friends Faith and Daniela and her nephews, Caleb and Jacob, take nature walks through the woods. They learn the art of making maple syrup, see a deer and her fawn, and watch their frisky Jack Russell terrier run after a spunky raccoon. The story takes a twist, and the imaginations begin. Lessons learned at summer camp bring forth an amazing story, and Caleb and Jacob learn the best lesson of all, that theyll never be alone. The enjoyment of North Long Lake and the children inspired me to write this adventure. The woods are filled with animals to see. I live in our cozy lake home with my husband, Dan; daughter, Danielle; and our dog, Bella.

Book excerpt: ONE OF THE YEAR'S BEST BOOKS The Wall Street Journal • Slate • Kansas City Star • Flavorwire • Policy Mic • Buzzfeed “Necessary Errors is a very good novel, an enviably good one, and to read it is to relive all the anxieties and illusions and grand projects of one’s own youth.”—James Wood, The New Yorker The exquisite debut novel by the author of Overthrow that brilliantly captures the lives and romances of young expatriates in newly democratic Prague It’s October 1990. Jacob Putnam is young and full of ideas. He’s arrived a year too late to witness Czechoslovakia’s revolution, but he still hopes to find its spirit, somehow. He discovers a country at a crossroads between communism and capitalism, and a picturesque city overflowing with a vibrant, searching sense of possibility. As the men and women Jacob meets begin to fall in love with one another, no one turns out to be quite the same as the idea Jacob has of them—including Jacob himself. Necessary Errors is the long-awaited first novel from literary critic and journalist Caleb Crain. Shimmering and expansive, Crain’s prose richly captures the turbulent feelings and discoveries of youth as it stretches toward adulthood—the chance encounters that grow into lasting, unforgettable experiences and the surprises of our first ventures into a foreign world—and the treasure of living in Prague during an era of historic change.

Book Slave Breeding

Download or read book Slave Breeding written by Gregory D. Smithers and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over two centuries, the topic of slave breeding has occupied a controversial place in the master narrative of American history. From nineteenth-century abolitionists to twentieth-century filmmakers and artists, Americans have debated whether slave owners deliberately and coercively manipulated the sexual practices and marital status of enslaved African Americans to reproduce new generations of slaves for profit. In this bold and provocative book, historian Gregory Smithers investigates how African Americans have narrated, remembered, and represented slave-breeding practices. He argues that while social and economic historians have downplayed the significance of slave breeding, African Americans have refused to forget the violence and sexual coercion associated with the plantation South. By placing African American histories and memories of slave breeding within the larger context of America’s history of racial and gender discrimination, Smithers sheds much-needed light on African American collective memory, racialized perceptions of fragile black families, and the long history of racially motivated violence against men, women, and children of color.

Book John Calvin s Bible Commentaries On The Book Of Joshua

Download or read book John Calvin s Bible Commentaries On The Book Of Joshua written by John Calvin and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His commentaries cover the larger part of the Old Testament, and all of the new excepting Second and Third John and the Apocalypse. His commentaries and lectures stand in the front rank of Biblical interpretation. The Commentary On Joshua was the last literary labor of its venerable Author. When he engaged in it, his constitution, which had never been strong, was completely worn out by excessive exertion, and almost every line of it must have been dictated to his amanuensis during momentary intervals of relief from severe bodily pain. On this point we possess authentic documents which leave no room for doubt. Such are the circumstances in which this Commentary was composed, and it is impossible, in reflecting on them, not to admire the indomitable energy which Calvin displayed in proceeding with his task, and in meeting the remonstrance's of those who would have withdrawn him from it, with the heroic exclamation, "Would you that the Lord, when He comes, should find me idle!" A Work written at such a time, and in such a spirit, might justly claim exemption from criticism; but it has no need of indulgence, and can well afford to be judged by its own intrinsic merits. Viewed merely as an intellectual effort, it displays all the excellencies which characterize the other Commentaries of its distinguished Author: viewed in a higher and better light, it is his dying bequest to the Church - a solemn ratification of the whole System of Doctrine which he had so long, so earnestly, and so successfully promulgated.
