Book The Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection

Download or read book The Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection written by David Shields and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type Collection is a comprehensive collection of wood type manufactured and used for printing in nineteenth-century America. Comprising nearly 150 typefaces of various sizes and styles, it was amassed by noted design educator and historian Rob Roy Kelly starting in 1957 and is now held by the University of Texas. Although Kelly himself published a 1969 book on wood type and nineteenth-century typographic history, there has been little written about the creation of the wood type forms, the collection, or Kelly. In this book, David Shields rigorously updates and expands upon Kelly’s historical information about the types, clarifying the collection’s exact composition and providing a better understanding of the stylistic development of wood type forms during the nineteenth century. Using rich materials from the period, Shields provides a stunning visual context that complements the textual history of each typeface. He also highlights the non-typographic material in the collection—such as borders, rules, ornaments, and image cuts—that have not been previously examined. Featuring over 300 color illustrations, this written history and catalog is bound to spark renewed interest in the collection and its broader typographic period.

Book Only on Saturday Deluxe Edition

Download or read book Only on Saturday Deluxe Edition written by Chuck Byrne and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only on Saturday is the singular, definitive volume of Jack Stauffacher's beautiful and experimental typographic prints. Highly collected in his lifetime, these prints reveal Stauffacher's whimsical yet meticulous studies in composition and craft. After inheriting a box of old and mismatched wood type in 1966, Stauffacher began playing with the weathered letterforms "only onSaturday" as a break from his work week. These arrangements-some patterned with letters in different sizes and typefaces, some layered with multiple presses of a single letter, others awash insolvent-morphed from exploratory sessions in his off hours to formal studies of what was possible between the positive and negative spaces on a page. Only on Saturday examines five limited-edition portfolios of these dynamic and inventive prints, as well as his unbound individual and series prints. A selection of images from each project is paired with an essay detailing the process behind the work and tracing his influences-from his filmmaker brother Frank to modernist designer Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. In addition, many of Stauffacher's long-time collectors and collaborators contribute first-person stories about his process and legacy, painting a portrait of a printer-scholar at the top of his craft.Available in regular and deluxe editions, Only on Saturday is a celebration of this master printer, who introduced typography as a subject for modern print making.

Book Unseen Cinema

Download or read book Unseen Cinema written by Bruce Charles Posner and published by Filmmakers Showcase. This book was released on 2001 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

The poems are laments speaking of climate catastrophe and its felt consequence, in ways both direct and indirect. One poem mourns the loss of a neighbor's eighty-foot-tall Monterey pine, another holds refugees crossing the Mediterranean, another recalls harrowed war fields of medieval Japan and 1916 France." --
