Victorian attitudes were shocked or shattered by the new drama of Ibsen; the major figure of George Bernard Shaw dominated the period; theatre censorship was the subject of a long and furious contest; and staging conventions changed from the spectacular stylings of Irving and Beerbohm Tree to the masking and statuesque styles of Isadora Duncan and the inner realism of Stanislavsky. This book traces the activities of the leading figures in the English theatre, notably William Archer who introduced Ibsen to this country and who became one of the main promoters of the idea of a National Theatre. Other personalities discussed include Harley Granville Barker, particularly his association with Shaw at the Court Theatre and his part in campaigns against censorship and for changes in the staging of Shakespeare, and Edward Gordon Craig, whose rebellion against the Victorian theatre took and anti-realist direction. This is a stimulating account of the background to the modern English theatre which can only increase appreciation of its standard and variety.

His unexplained death in Paris at the age of 26 cut short a highly promising literary career. The striking realism of Crackanthorpe's first collection of short stories, Wreckage (1893), followed by the psychologically complex Sentimental Studies and posthumous Last Studies (1896), together with the prose poems of Vignettes (1896), were much admired by Henry James and his contemporaries, Dowson, Johnson and Symons, as the work of a leading, innovative writer of critical Decadence. Indeed his stories combine an unrelenting realism with a conscious aestheticizing of their often troubling, bleak subject matter. As co-editor of the short-lived periodical, The Albermarle and campaigning literary journalist, Crackanthorpe was a key critical participant in central literary and artistic debates of the early 1890s: 'facts' versus 'effects' in literature; the efficacy of realism/naturalism; questions of taste, 'reticence' and the handling of controversial subject matter. This fully annotated, critical text comprises the most extensive collection to date of Crackanthorpe's writing. As well as uncollected stories, the volume includes a short story never previously published in book form. This edition also contains a selection of Crackanthorpe's critical writings and a bibliographical survey of his work.

The play appeared at first sight to offer audiences a reassuringly familiar drama of a marriage threatened by an interloper but ultimately reaffirmed when the wiferecognises her true place and her dangerous admirer is sent out into the cold. But, as critics have noted, the play was a re-working by Shaw of Ibsen's A Doll's House in which the husband played the part of the over-protected doll, unaware of the real power dynamics of his marriage.You Never Can Tell (1897) was Shaw's seaside comedy of manners, complete with an all-knowing waiter, exuberant twins, a lovelorn dentist, a long-lost father, lashings of food, and a comic catchphrase to provide the title. Shaw took all these familiar elements of Victorian farce and reworked theminto a modern play of ideas, in which etiquette and ideologies collide. Just as in Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest (a comparison which Shaw always stubbornly rejected), questions of class, marriage, manners, money, sex and identity underpin the plot of love-at-first-sight, mislaid parentsand reunited families.
