Book excerpt: As the self-proclaimed Huckleberry Finn of Woodbury, New Jersey, who would have guessed that James Wright's life would take him through sports, college, and into the FBI. He spent a carefree childhood roaming the rivers and woods of Woodbury with his dog, Golly. Those rivers, lakes and woods were his Mississippi River. His love for sports led him into another world. What a great day it was - a boy and his dad going to a baseball game together. Next came his wrestling days during high school and college. All of these experiences gave him the self-discipline that he would need later in life. He thought that teaching and coaching would be his life's work, but quite unexpectedly, he ended up in the FBI. He was privileged to work some of the Bureau's highest profile cases such as the Patty Hearst kidnapping, Jim Jones and the People's Temple mass suicide, the Unabomber, the Chowchilla kidnapping of twenty-six children, and many more cases. He's had a great life with many wonderful memories, but the icing on the cake was his induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an Outstanding American. He is proud to be an American and this is his story!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moquedas, or Tonto, The Brave, as he is known to his companions, Mehitabel Lee and Ronnie Jones, with whom he shares many adventures, while hiking with them in the canyons around their town of Highland Boy, come across a deep abandoned mineshaft. When Ronnie drops a pebble into it to determine its depth, instead of a rock-against-rock echo or the sound of a splash, they hear a screeching throbbing wail as though from a tormented witch. Thus begins the adventure of a lifetime for the three companions. They are determined to learn more about the legends, which have caused the people of Highland Boy to be fearful of the thundershowers, whose brilliant flashes of lightening and building-shaking thunder, come to town about the same time each year. The elders, the town marshal and doctor, relate stories of the old days: Of a romance between ill-fated lovers, whose mishaps in days gone by, have led to the mysteries that cause the haunting, screeching laughter and wails of despair that accompany the thunder and lightening. Determined to end the grief of the lovers and end the troubles that plague the town, the adventurers set out to learn all they can and rid the town of its nightmarish history. They bravely face the missions that they have laid out for themselves in order to achieve their goals. Finally, in the coroner's dark, rat-infested warehouse, the adventurers find the key that will help them solve the mystery of the haunted mine and bring peace to their beloved town. They vow to return the key, a message of love, to its rightful place, in the haunted mine.

Book The Securitization of Memorial Space

Download or read book The Securitization of Memorial Space written by Nicholas S. Paliewicz and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Securitization of Memorial Space argues that the National September 11 Memorial and Memorial Museum is a securitized site of memory—what Foucault called a dispositif—that polices visitors and publics to remember trauma, darkness, and victimage in ways that perpetuate the “necessity” of the Global War on Terrorism. Contributing to studies in public memory, rhetoric and argumentation, and critical security studies, Nicholas S. Paliewicz and Marouf Hasian Jr. show how various human and nonhuman actors participated in complicated argumentative formations that have mobilized political, performative, and militaristic practices of anti-terroristic violence in other parts of the world. While there were times that certain argumentative stakeholders—such as local New Yorkers—questioned the necessity of securitizing this site of memory, agentic factions including the families of those who died on 9/11, public supporters, security agents, and politicians created an ideologically oriented security assemblage that remembers 9/11 through counter-terroristic performances at Ground Zero. In chronological order from the 2001 “dustbowl” to the present popularization of 9/11 memories, the authors present seven chapters of rich rhetorical analysis that show how the National September 11 Memorial and Memorial Museum perpetuates grief, uncertainty, and angst that affects public memory in multidirectional ways.

Book Claude McKay Rebel Sojourner in the Harlem Renaissance

Download or read book Claude McKay Rebel Sojourner in the Harlem Renaissance written by Wayne F. Cooper and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1996-02-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Cooper paints a meticulous and absorbing portrait of McKay’s restless artistic, intellectual, and political odyssey... The definitive biography on McKay.”—Choice Although recognized today as one of the genuine pioneers of black literature in this century—the author of “If We Must Die,” Home to Harlem, Banana Bottom, and A Long Way from Home, among other works—Claude McKay (1890–1948) died penniless and almost forgotten in a Chicago hospital. In this masterly study, Wayne Cooper presents a fascinating, detailed account of McKay’s complex, chaotic, and frequently contradictory life. In his poetry and fiction, as well as in his political and social commentaries, McKay searched for a solid foundation for a valid black identity among the working-class cultures of the West Indies and the United States. He was an undeniably important predecessor to such younger writers of the Harlem Renaissance as Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen, and also to influential West Indian and African writers such as C. L. R. James and Aimé Césaire. Knowledge of his life adds important dimensions to our understanding of American radicalism, the expatriates of the 1920s, and American literature. “Mr. Cooper’s most original contribution is his careful and perceptive analysis of McKay’s nonfiction writing, especially his social and political commentary, which often contained ‘prophetic statements‘ on a range of important social, political, and historical issues.”—New York Times Book Review

Book The Manufacture of Consent

Download or read book The Manufacture of Consent written by Stephen M. Underhill and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2020-02-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second Red Scare was a charade orchestrated by a tyrant with the express goal of undermining the New Deal—so argues Stephen M. Underhill in this hard-hitting analysis of J. Edgar Hoover’s rhetorical agency. Drawing on Classification 94, a vast trove of recently declassified records that documents the longtime FBI director’s domestic propaganda campaigns in the mid-twentieth century, Underhill shows that Hoover used the growing power of his office to subvert the presidencies of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman and redirect the trajectory of U.S. culture away from social democracy toward a toxic brand of neoliberalism. He did so with help from Republicans who opposed organized labor and Southern Democrats who supported Jim Crow in what is arguably the most culturally significant documented political conspiracy in U.S. history, a wholesale domestic propaganda program that brainwashed Americans and remade their politics. Hoover also forged ties with the powerful fascist leaders of the period to promote his own political ambitions. All the while, as a love letter to Clyde Tolson still preserved in Hoover’s papers attests, he strove to pass for straight while promoting a culture that demonized same-sex love. The erosion of democratic traditions Hoover fostered continues to haunt Americans today.

Book excerpt: "In 1964, in the midst of the volatile times surrounding the Civil Rights Movement, Sergeants C. Lee Cody, Jr. and Donald R. Coleman, Sr., solved one of our nation's worst hate crimes and paid for it with their careers. In the years since, Cody has collected and catalogued a mountain of documents providing irrefutable evidence that exposes blatant racism prevalent in high places--in both federal and state offices--and he has created a horrifying tale of coverups and corruption resulting in flagrant violations of the 14th Amendment and a disregard for the Civil Rights guaranteed citizens under our nation's Constitution for equal protection under the laws. As told in part on Oprah, the History Channel, Court TV, and Dateline, this is the tragic story of the premeditated murder of Johnnie Mae Chappell, a thirty-five-year-old law-abiding black mother of ten and after her murder, the decades long criminal obstruction of justice. It is a story of racism and public corruption at its ugliest. In addition to the racism, Cody's expose also reveals the persecution of the Duval County detectives who solved the Chappell homicide and their attempts to bring the guilty to justice. Cody details the massive conspiracy on the part of law enforcement and government officials and prosecutors orchestrated by both state and federal officials--including even members of the FBI, who were determined to cover up for those responsible for the Criminal obstruction of justice in Johnnie Mae Chappell's murder"--Cover, p. 4.
