Book Exploring the Universe with the IUE Satellite

Download or read book Exploring the Universe with the IUE Satellite written by Y. Kondo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was conceived to commemorate the continuing success of the guest observer program for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite observatory. It is also hoped that this volume will serve as a useful tutorial for those pursuing research in related fields with future space observatories. As the IUE has been the product of the three-way collaboration between the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), European Space Agency (ESA) and the British Engineering and Research Council (SERC), so is this book the fruit of the collaboration of the American and European participants in the IUE. As such, it is a testimony to timely international cooperation and sharing of resources that open up new possibilities. The IUE spacecraft was launched on the 26th of January in 1978 into a geosynchronous orbit over the Atlantic Ocean. The scientific operations of the IUE are performed for 16 hours a day from Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, U.S.A, and for 8 hours a day from ESA Villafranca Satellite Tracking Station near Madrid, Spain.

Book Analytical Derivation and Verification of Zero Gyro Control for the Iue Satellite

Download or read book Analytical Derivation and Verification of Zero Gyro Control for the Iue Satellite written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite was launched January 26, 1978 into a geosynchronous orbit over South America. From its stationary position, the telescope maintains continuous communication with the control centers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and at the European Space Agency's (ESA's) Villagranca del Castillo Satellite Tracking Station in Spain. Since its launch in 1978, the satellite has gradually lost four of the original six gyroscopes in the Inertial Reference Assembly (IRA). In August 1985, the fourth of the original six gyros failed and a two-gyro system developed by NASA-GSFC was uplinked to the satellite and is currently in use. A one-gyro system also developed by NASA-GSFC is ready for use in case of another gyro failure. In the event that the sixth gyro should also fail, a zero-gyro system is being developed. The goal of this system is to provide interial target pointing without the use of gyroscopes. The satellite has sun sensors to provide attitude information about two of the three axes. It relies upon the exchange of reaction wheel momenta to determine angular position and rate of the third axis. Bowles, Tiffany and Croft, John Goddard Space Flight Center...

This book was released on 2018-06-24 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite operated successfully for more than 17 years. Its archive of more than 100,000 science exposures is widely acknowledged as an invaluable scientific resource that will not be duplicated in the foreseeable future. We have searched this archive for objects which were observed 10 or more times with the same spectral dispersion and wavelength coverage over the lifetime of IUE. Using this definition of a time series, we find that roughly half of the science exposures are members of such time series. This paper describes a WEB-based IUE time series browser which enables the user to visually inspect the repeated observations for variability and to examine each member spectrum individually. Further, if the researcher determines that a specific data set is worthy of further investigation, it can be easily downloaded for further, detailed analysis. To date, approximately 65,000 spectra have been stored in an archive at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. A number of procedures have been generated to facilitate access to the data in the IUE spectral archive. This document describes the procedures which include on-line quick look of the displays, search of an observation data base for selected observations, and several methods for ordering data from the archive. Book On Orbit Servicing Next Generation of Space Activities

Download or read book On Orbit Servicing Next Generation of Space Activities written by Annette Froehlich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shares a range of new and diverse insights on On-Orbit Servicing (OOS), and examines its implications especially from political, legal, economic, and security perspectives. OSS has been evolving rapidly and presents both challenges and opportunities, such as in-space repairs, refuelling, refurbishment of spacecraft and servicing satellites, which could play a critical role in extending satellite lifecycles, while also representing a valuable next step in debris mitigation. At the same time, many legal questions have arisen in connection with OOS: the need to prevent hostile actions under the pretext of OSS; the distinction between governmental and non-governmental OOS operators; the status of re-worked and recycled space objects; the issue of control in terms of operations performed in orbit, i.e., in the international sphere; the status of objects manufactured in orbit and applicable law, including liability and registration; and the impacts on insurance law and risk management. Finally, the book examines the implications of OOS for emerging space actors in the Global South, and recommends a paradigm shift to help developing countries fully recognise the necessity and urgency of being involved in discussions on OSS, as opposed to leaving it up to the developed space actors. This book will be of great interest to practitioners, academics, and students working in the space sector and related fields.
