Book Itinerant Preaching in the Early Days of Methodism Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Itinerant Preaching in the Early Days of Methodism IN these palmy days of Methodism, when its churches are numbered by the thousand and its members by hundreds of thousands, and in our large cities it is even fashionable to be a Methodist, it is difficult for the member of a wealthy society, worshipping in a spacious modern built church, with its luxurious seats, costly organ, cultivated choir, and general surround ings indicative of wealth and refined tastes, to realize that fifty or sixty years ago it cost something more than dollars to be a Methodist, especially to be a Methodist preacher. The little plain, barn-like meet ing house, the district school house, or the town hall accommodated the devoted band, few in numbers, poor in worldly goods but rich in faith, who, with their poorly paid, poorly clad, but persistent and faithful preacher, planted the seeds of Methodism, which, watered by the dews and showers of divine grace and judiciously weeded by the itinerant husbandman, have produced the abundant harvest. The life of William Watters, the first na tive itinerant of American Methodism, and that of my father, Henry Watters, yet living, and a descendant of the same family, more than span the history of the Church in this country. The present prodigious results of the Church, produced in so brief a time, aug ment the worth and importance of first things and first men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Preacher, or Lights and Shadows in the Life of an Itinerant How the manuscript from which the following pages have been printed came into the hands of the publisher, need not here be told. Of the genuineness of the narrative, those most familiar with the trying duties of a Methodist Itinerant Preacher, can best judge. It has been sketched by one who is evidently no stranger to the subject he has presented. Should this first part be well received, further extracts from the journal will be given, in no way inferior to this in interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Heroes of Other Days The present generation of Methodists, it is feared, know few of the names of the Methodists of former days, and still less of the manners and speech of the olden time. Some have an idea that the preachers were uneducated, ignorant ranters, and that their hearers were emotional and easily impressed. The preachers of the early days were sometimes ignorant men, but filled with the love Of Christ and burning with zeal to extend his kingdom. Many were graduates of Brush College, as they facetiously called the itinerant method of study. Their saddlebags contained their library, and whenever they could they studied. Whenever an Older preacher was met the younger one would ask questions and receive instruction and advice. His own representation is to the same effect. When a certain Scribe said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest, he replied}, the foxes have holes and the birds Of the air have nests, but the Son Of man hath not Where to lay his head. Both the question and the answer Show, that he circulated among the people in the largest sense. As the infidelity of the community did not deter him from giving them an offer of life, so neither did their faith or flattery restrain him from leaving them and preach ing to others. The Obscure village was not SO unim portant as to escape his notice, nor the magnifi cent city SO attractive, as to monopolize his efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Early Methodist Preachers, Vol. 6 of 6: Chiefly Written by Themselves IT is a remark of a judicious minister, that he read books in general to enlarge his knowledge and improve his mind, but he read Christian experience with a view to bring his heart into a. Good frame. He was, certainly, correct; for nothing can excite and revive our piety more than models of the most enlivened piety. A personal knowledge of the sub ject of the following memoir enables me to say, with confidence, that he was such a model, while he remained in private life, as well as when he moved in a Sphere of great usefulness, and an enlarged acquaintance with the church of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Life and Ministry of Mr. William Bramwell: Lately an Itinerant Methodist Preacher; With Extracts From His Interesting and Extensive Correspondence A great disparity of style will be perceptible in different parts of the memoir; as it will be seen that But by candid readers this diversity will not be regarded as any disparagement to the work; they will rather be pleased to find, in the mouth of two or three witnesses, every word established respecting the virtues of Mr. Bramwell All the accounts, however varied in style, unite in correctly representing his love to God, "his yearning pity for mankind," and his intense desire for their salvation. These powerful motives were in constant exercise on his mind, and incited him to the performance of labours innumerable. It is probable that there have been but few Christian ministers since the days of the apostles, who have made greater exertions to bring to the fold of Christ the fallen sons of men, and whose labours have been more signally owned by the great Head of the Church. But though the destruction of his journal, the unfulfilled promises of several friends, and the difference of style, have rendered this Memoir an irregular kind of composition; yet I trust that every humble follower of our Lord Jesus Christ will be edified and instructed by the living traits of holiness which it exhibits. Some of the anecdotes may, in the view of cool and calculating characters, seem to savour too much of enthusiasm. But this cannot be charged on Mr. Bramwell as a fauAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Early Methodist Preachers, Vol. 4 of 6: Chiefly Written by Themselves I was born in a very obscure village, near Leeds, in Yorkshire, November 12th, 1737. My parents lived in good repute, were members of the Established Church, and constantly attended public worship; but were entire strangers to the power of godliness. They possessed, however, some degree of the fear of God, and, according to the light they had, trained up all their children in the instruction and discipline of the Lord. They taught us to say our prayers, and repeat the Church Catechism, obliged us constantly to go to church, and would not suffer us to run into open sin. My father maintained his authority in his own house, and his word gave law to his children. I heartily bless God for this, as I am sensible that by this means I was kept from running into many and various evils, which I was exposed to in my childhood.
