Book Islam in Inter war Europe

Download or read book Islam in Inter war Europe written by Nathalie Clayer and published by Hurst & Company. This book was released on 2008 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the enormous literature on the Muslim world, one of the few gaps in our knowledge is the status of Islam in inter-war Europe, an imbalance this book aims to address. The Muslim population of Europe in the period from 1918-1939 was not one of isolated islands of belief and practice. Rather, there was far more interaction between Muslim communities than had hitherto been imagined. For example, there was much correspondence and exchange of ideas between the Ahmadi-Lahori missions of Berlin and Woking, near London, and Albanian religious leaders. Other topics discussed in this book include the earlier than imagined emergence of notions of a distinctly 'European' Islam, the fraught interplay of politics and Islam, especially the development by some governments of Muslim 'agendas', the richness and importance of debates within Europe's Muslim community, the attempts by the Nazis to foment 'jihad' and the modus operandi of trans-national networks.

Book The Bilingual Text

Download or read book The Bilingual Text written by Jan Walsh Hokenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilingual texts have been left outside the mainstream of both translation theory and literary history. Yet the tradition of the bilingual writer, moving between different sign systems and audiences to create a text in two languages, is a rich and venerable one, going back at least to the Middle Ages. The self-translated, bilingual text was commonplace in the mutlilingual world of medieval and early modern Europe, frequently bridging Latin and the vernaculars. While self-translation persisted among cultured elites, it diminished during the consolidation of the nation-states, in the long era of nationalistic monolingualism, only to resurge in the postcolonial era. The Bilingual Text makes a first step toward providing the fields of translation studies and comparative literature with a comprehensive account of literary self-translation in the West. It tracks the shifting paradigms of bilinguality across the centuries and addresses the urgent questions that the bilingual text raises for translation theorists today: Is each part of the bilingual text a separate, original creation or is each incomplete without the other? Is self-translation a unique genre? Can either version be split off into a single language or literary tradition? How can two linguistic versions of a text be fitted into standard models of foreign and domestic texts and cultures? Because such texts defeat standard categories of analysis, The Bilingual Text reverses the usual critical gaze, highlighting not dissimilarities but continuities across versions, allowing for dissimilarities within orders of correspondence, and englobing the literary as well as linguistic and cultural dimensions of the text. Emphasizing the arcs of historical change in concepts of language and translation that inform each case study, The Bilingual Text examines the perdurance of this phenomenon in Western societies and literatures.

Book The Language of Europe

Download or read book The Language of Europe written by Domenico Cosmai and published by Université de Bruxelles. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to the policy area of multilingualism and to translation practice within the EU institutions. This first edition in English builds on the success, among academics and practitioners alike, of its two preceding Italian editions (published respectively in 2003 and 2007 with the title 'Tradurre per l’Unione europea', Milan, Hoepli), which have closely followed the EU journey through its successive enlargements, and the impact of these multiple accessions on the politics and practice of institutional translation. It proposes an in-depth, up-to-the-minute analysis of the direct relationships between member-state languages and the problems of knowledge transfer between the diverse languages and cultures that make up the patchwork which is the EU. Enriched throughout with practical examples from many among the twenty-four official languages of the European Union, specially selected and adapted for an Anglophone readership, The Language of Europe features detailed studies on the following topics: the background to and arguments in favour of EU multilingualism; the language features of EU documents; variations in translation practice between the different EU institutions, agencies and consultative bodies; the day-to-day working practice of translators and lawyer-linguists; the impact of ICT on translation practice; distinctive genres of EU institutional translation; what the future holds for EU translation. The volume incorporates a range of sample texts from a variety of EU official languages, provided in the source-language original and English target-language translation, in order to give the student and specialist an insight into and overview of the rigour and procedural expertise which are demanded and can be seen at work from initial (co-)draft to final version in the rendering of a “multilingual” EU document.

Book Grammatology and Literary Modernity in Turkey

Download or read book Grammatology and Literary Modernity in Turkey written by Nergis Ertürk and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1928 Turkish alphabet reform replacing the Perso-Arabic script with the Latin phonetic alphabet is an emblem of Turkish modernization. Grammatology and Literary Modernity in Turkey traces the history of Turkish alphabet and language reform from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, examining its effects on modern Turkish literature. In readings of the novels, essays, and poetry of Ahmed Midhat, Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem, Omer Seyfeddin, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar, Peyami Safa, and Nazim Hikmet, Nergis Erturk argues that modern Turkish literature is profoundly self-conscious of dramatic change in its own historical conditions of possibility. Where literary historiography has sometimes idealized the Turkish language reforms as the culmination of a successful project of Westernizing modernization, Erturk suggests a different critical narrative: one of the consolidation of control over communication, forging a unitary nation and language from a pluralistic and multilingual society.

Book Dare to Disappoint

Download or read book Dare to Disappoint written by Ozge Samanci and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR). This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up on the Aegean Coast, Ozge loved the sea and imagined a life of adventure while her parents and society demanded predictability. Her dad expected Ozge, like her sister, to become an engineer. She tried to hear her own voice over his and the religious and militaristic tensions of Turkey and the conflicts between secularism and fundamentalism. Could she be a scuba diver like Jacques Cousteau? A stage actress? Would it be possible to please everyone including herself? In her unpredictable and funny graphic memoir, Ozge recounts her story using inventive collages, weaving together images of the sea, politics, science, and friendship.

Book Shipwreck With Spectator

Download or read book Shipwreck With Spectator written by Hans Blumenberg and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elegant essay exemplifies Blumenberg's ideas about the ability of the historical study of metaphor to illuminate essential aspects of being human. Originally published in the same year as his monumental Work on Myth, Shipwreck with Spectator traces the evolution of the complex of metaphors related to the sea, to shipwreck, and to the role of the spectator in human culture from ancient Greece to modern times. The sea is one of humanity's oldest metaphors for life, and a sea journey, Blumenberg observes, has often stood for our journey through life. We all know the role that shipwrecks can play in this journey, and at some level we have all played witness to others' wrecks, standing in safety and knowing that there is nothing we can do to help, yet fixed comfortably or uncomfortably in our ambiguous role as spectator. Through Blumenberg's seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of letters, from ancient texts through nineteenth-century reminiscences and modern speeches, we see layer upon layer revealed in the meanings humans have given to these metaphors; and in this way we begin to understand what metaphors can do that more straightforward modes of expression cannot. This edition of Shipwreck with Spectator also includes "Prospect for a Theory of Nonconceptuality", an essay that recounts the evolution of Blumenberg's ideas about metaphorology in the years following his early manifesto "Paradigms for a Metaphorology".
