Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The chronology of the Italian Renaissance, its character, and context have long been a topic of discussion among scholars. Some date its beginnings to the fourteenthcentury work of Giotto, others to the generation of Masaccio, Brunelleschi, and Donatello that fl ourished from around 1400. The close of the Renaissance has also proved elusive. Mannerism, for example, is variously considered to be an independent (but subsidiary) late aspect of Renaissance style or a distinct style in its own right."

  • Author : Mitchell Albala
  • Publisher : Watson-Guptill
  • Release : 2011-11-15
  • ISBN : 0823008347

Download or read book Landscape Painting written by Mitchell Albala and published by Watson-Guptill. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because nature is so expansive and complex, so varied in its range of light, landscape painters often have to look further and more deeply to find form and structure, value patterns, and an organized arrangement of shapes. In Landscape Painting, Mitchell Albala shares his concepts and practices for translating nature's grandeur, complexity, and color dynamics into convincing representations of space and light. Concise, practical, and inspirational, Landscape Painting focuses on the greatest challenges for the landscape artist, such as: • Simplification and Massing: Learn to reduce nature's complexity by looking beneath the surface of a subject to discover the form's basic masses and shapes.• Color and Light: Explore color theory as it specifically applies to the landscape, and learn the various strategies painters use to capture the illusion of natural light.• Selection and Composition: Learn to select wisely from nature's vast panorama. Albala shows you the essential cues to look for and how to find the most promising subject from a world of possibilities. The lessons in Landscape Painting—based on observation rather than imitation and applicable to both plein air and studio practice—are accompanied by painting examples, demonstrations, photographs, and diagrams. Illustrations draw from the work of more than 40 contemporary artists and such masters of landscape painting as John Constable, Sanford Gifford, and Claude Monet. Based on Albala's 25 years of experience and the proven methods taught at his successful plein air workshops, this in-depth guide to all aspects of landscape painting is a must-have for anyone getting started in the genre, as well as more experienced practitioners who want to hone their skills or learn new perspectives.

Book The Development of the Italian Schools of Painting

Download or read book The Development of the Italian Schools of Painting written by Charlotte Van Marle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the sudden and immature death of the Author, this work, which was planned to comprise 2I volumes has had to end with the I8th. From a number of students and art critics requests have reached the publisher and myself that an index should be made of the volumes which have been published. Herein their desire has been satisfied. This general index is divided into two parts: one for names of places, so that with the greatest ease and without loss of time the student can find all the Italian paintings from early Christian times up to the end of the Quattrocento, which are scattered throughout the churches, galleries and private collections of Europe and America. For the larger towns the material is divided into the following headings: I Churches and Monasteries. II Public Collections. III Public Buildings and Streets. IV Private Collections. and this order, though not indicated, has always been followed for the smaller localities. The second division contains the names of artists, each one accom panied by dates and where possible an indication of the site of his activity. The chief aim of this index is to make it easier to consult the enormous amount of material treated in the I8 volumes. For the traveller who desires to know what paintings are to be found in any town this index should be a valuable vade-mecum.

Book The Italian Renaissance in Art

Book excerpt: This book has been written for students both in and out of school who bring to the study of art no technical knowledge and little practice in its interpretation, but who feel that they would like to be introduced to what others have found a great treasury of satisfaction. The book is written in the firm belief that appreciation is the goal of study for the average man, and that real appreciation is possible without any professional knowledge of any of the fine arts. - Foreword.

Book The Sword in the Age of Chivalry

Download or read book The Sword in the Age of Chivalry written by Ewart Oakeshott and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resplendent image of the medieval knight is concentrated in the symbolism of his sword. The straight, two-edged, cross-hilted knightly sword of the European middle ages was an object of vital importance, a lethal weapon on the battlefield and a badge of chivalry in that complex social code. Ewart Oakeshott draws on his extensive research and expert eye (and hand, for he has a special sense for the feel of a sword) to develop a typology for and recount the history of the sword, from the knightly successors of the Viking weapon to the emergence of the Renaissance sword - that is, roughly from 1050 to 1550. Within this time-span, two distinct groups of swords successively evolved. Problems of dating are acute, and evidence is adduced from literature and art as well as from archaeology, for a sword (or some parts of a sword) could have been in use several generations after it first saw battle. To deal with such overlap, Ewart Oakeshott develops, refines and illustrates a detailed typology of swords which takes in entire swords, pommel-forms, cross-guards, and the grip and scabbard.
