Book excerpt: The inspiring and hilarious story of Patch Adams's quest to bring free health care to the world and to transform the way doctors practice medicine • Tells the story of Patch Adam's lifetime quest to transform the health care system • Released as a film from Universal Pictures, starring Robin Williams Meet Patch Adams, M.D., a social revolutionary who has devoted his career to giving away health care. Adams is the founder of the Gesundheit Institute, a home-based medical practice that has treated more than 15,000 people for free, and that is now building a full-scale hospital that will be open to anyone in the world free of charge. Ambitious? Yes. Impossible? Not for those who know and work with Patch. Whether it means putting on a red clown nose for sick children or taking a disturbed patient outside to roll down a hill with him, Adams does whatever is necessary to help heal. In his frequent lectures at medical schools and international conferences, Adams's irrepressible energy cuts through the businesslike facade of the medical industry to address the caring relationship between doctor and patient that is at the heart of true medicine. All author royalties are used to fund The Gesundheit Institute, a 40-bed free hospital in West Virginia. Adams's positive vision and plan for the future is an inspiration for those concerned with the inaccessibility of affordable, quality health care. Today's high-tech medicine has become too costly, impersonal, and grim. In his frequent lectures to colleges, churches, community groups, medical schools, and conferences, Patch shows how healing can be a loving, creative, humorous human exchange--not a business transaction.

Book Maria Montessori

Download or read book Maria Montessori written by Rita Kramer and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of a physician, feminist, social reformer, educator, and one of the most influential, and controversial women of the 20th century. Maria Montessori effected a worldwide revolution in the classroom. She developed a new method of educating the young and inspired a movement that carried it into every corner of the world. This is the story of the woman behind the public figure—her accomplishments, her ideas, and her passions. Montessori broke the mold imposed on women in the nineteenth century and forged a new one, first for herself and eventually for those who came after her. Against formidable odds she became the first woman to graduate from the medical school of the University of Rome and then devoted herself to the condition of children considered uneducable at the time. She developed a teaching method that enabled them to do as well as normal children, a method which then led her to found a new kind of school—the Casa dei Bambini, or House of Children—which gained her worldwide fame and still pervades classrooms wherever young children learn. This biography is not only the story of a groundbreaking feminist but a vital chapter in the history of education. “Highly recommended for educators, parents, and moderate feminists who seek inspiration from one of the most accomplished women of this or any other age.”—Publishers Weekly

Book Negotiating the Art of Fatherhood in Late Medieval and Early Modern Italy

Download or read book Negotiating the Art of Fatherhood in Late Medieval and Early Modern Italy written by Juliann Vitullo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negotiating the Art of Fatherhood in Late Medieval and Early Modern Italy examines contested notions of fatherhood in written and visual texts during the development of the mercantile economy in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Italy. It analyzes debates about the household and community management of wealth, emotion, and trade in luxury “goods,” including enslaved women, as moral questions. Juliann Vitullo considers how this mercantile economy affected paternity and the portraits of ideal fatherhood, which in some cases reconceived the role of fathers and in others reconfirmed traditional notions of paternal authority.

Book Father Daughter Succession in Family Business

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To whom does a father, retiring from his life as a successful entrepreneur, pass control of the business he has built? Once it would always have been his eldest son, but increasingly women are becoming involved in family firms having risen to positions of influence and leadership. Using revealing case studies from the daughters who succeeded their entrepreneur fathers in a wide variety of challenging situations, cultures and continents, Father–Daughter Succession in Family Business discusses the changes which have led to daughters gaining influence in more and more family businesses. It looks at the tensions this succession can produce between old notions of how men and women should behave, and the new style of leadership that often comes about when a woman takes the helm. This book will help consultants, business educators, and researchers, as well as those who are themselves involved in significant family managed enterprises to better understand why it can no longer be assumed in any part of the World that the first born son will take over the reins of the family business.

Book Achieving So Much With So Little

Download or read book Achieving So Much With So Little written by Dr. Vincent N. Cefalu and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, my unedited autobiography, I explain how, with my pronounced limited academic ability, I managed to utilize both positive and detrimental factors from my early childhood to my advantage in order to accomplish my ultimate success in life. I discuss the many hardships and hurdles I encountered during my seemingly-impossible educational path. My eventual goal was also undoubtedly attributed to my life-long ability of being able to over-achieve and out-perform. Simply put, I had to be subjected to many needless but necessary stressful situations along with a combination of other factors in order to obtain what seemed to be an un-attainable goal. Along with these factors and endless battles with Bipolar Illness, I managed to convert these deterrents into an incredibly advantageous situation. Even one of my decisions to quit medical school turned out to be a very important impetus in my eventual success. In the second section of this book, I explain the many functions, procedures, and powers of the Coroner's Office, and detail the position of coroner that I held for fourteen years. The purpose of this was to set the stage for my being able to describe and report in depth the many unusual and bizarre cases that I encountered during this time. When things appear to be coming at you from all directions and your outlook appears quite gloomy and hopeless, don't even think about giving up. No matter how many destitute situations you find yourself in along the way, stay persistent and keep trying, because the eventual outcome may not be as predictable as everyone would like to think. This is an autobiography of a rural physician and coroner of a mid-sized Louisiana Parish who was able to accomplish one of the highest-possible goals in spite of his self-admitted limited academic ability. Having been the oldest of nine siblings, six of whom also became doctors, he explains as to how he was forced to encounter numerous hardships and ever-present challenges in order to be able to conquer a goal that seemed virtually impossible. Dr. Cefalu tells of how he managed to utilize both positive and detrimental factors from his early childhood to his advantage in order to accomplish his ultimate success in life. Along with these factors, many other constant struggles and endless battles with Bipolar Illness, he somehow managed to convert these deterrents into an incredibly advantageous situation whereby his ability to over-achieve and out-perform would make up the difference. Even one of his decisions to quit medical school turned out to be a very important impetus in his eventual success. In the second section of this book, he explains the many functions, procedures, and powers of the Coroner's Office, and details the position of coroner that he held for fourteen years. The purpose of this was to set the stage for his being able to describe and report in depth the many unusual and bizarre cases that he encountered during this time.
