Download or read book China s Rural Areas written by China Development Research Foundation and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prosperity of China’s people has advanced very much in recent decades. However, in many respects China is still a developing country, and this is especially true of rural areas where economic progress has not been as marked as in urban areas and where many people still live in relative poverty. The Chinese government recognizes that more hard work is needed in order to improve prosperity in the countryside. This book provides a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the situation in China’s rural areas, assesses the effectiveness or otherwise of current policies, and puts forward proposals for further development. Subjects covered include the changing population profile of rural areas, land ownership, agricultural improvements, and local self-government.

Download or read book Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe Managed Aquifer Recharge written by Christian Kazner and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-14 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of Groundwater Set - Buy all six books and save over 30% on buying separately! Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe Managed Aquifer Recharge has been developed from the RECLAIM WATER project supported by the European Commission under Thematic Priority 'Global Change and Ecosystems' of the Sixth Framework Programme. Its strategic objective is to develop hazard mitigation technologies for water reclamation providing safe and cost effective routes for managed aquifer recharge. Different treatment applications in terms of behaviour of key microbial and chemical contaminants are assessed. Engineered as well as natural treatment trains are investigated to provide guidance for sustainable MAR schemes using alternative sources such as effluent and stormwater. The technologies considered are also well suited to the needs of developing countries, which have a growing need of supplementation of freshwater resources. A broad range of international full-scale case studies enables insights into long-term system behaviour, operational aspects, and fate of a comprehensive number of compounds and contaminants, especially organic micropollutants and bulk organics. Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe Managed Aquifer Recharge depicts advances in water reclamation technologies and aims to provide new process combinations to treat alternative water sources to appropriate water quality levels for sustainable aquifer recharge. Download or read book FAO Regional Technical Expert Workshop on Cage Culture in Africa 20 23 October 2004 Entebbe Uganda written by Matthias Halwart and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cage culture is an established and profitable aquaculture system in many countries but it is a relatively complex culture system that is still in its infancy in the Africa region. This expert workshop was convened with the aim of identifying the key issues for sustainable cage culture in the region and developing a framework of good management practice. It concluded that although cage aquaculture could be an important development opportunity, it will require an effective policy framework to ensure that structural constraints to development are overcome and that development is both equitable and sustainable.

Download or read book Yield gap analysis of field crops written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To feed a world population that will exceed 9 billion by 2050 requires an estimated 60% increase over current primary agricultural productivity. Closing the common and often large gap between actual and attainable crop yield is critical to achieve this goal. To close yield gaps in both small and large scale cropping systems worldwide we need (1) definitions and techniques to measure and model yield at different levels (actual, attainable, potential) and different scales in space (field, farm, region, global) and time (short and long term); (2) identification of the causes of gaps between yield levels; (3) management options to reduce the gaps where feasible and (4) policies to favour adoption of sustainable gap-closing solutions. The aim of this publication is to critically review the methods for yield gap analysis, hence addressing primarily the first of these four requirements, reporting a wide-ranging and well-referenced analysis of literature on current methods to assess productivity of crops and cropping systems.

Download or read book Dirty Work written by Jeffrey Cole and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dirty Work explores the lives and work of recent immigrants from Africa, Asia, and elsewhere to the southern Italian region of Sicily. Using extensive research. Jeffrey E. Cole and Sally S. Booth focus on the experiences of foreigners employed in domestic service, prostitution, and agriculture. Investigation of these key sectors affords a revealing look into Sicily's place in the increasingly international circuit of people, goods, practices, and capital. This book departs from the focus, common in immigration studies, on a single nationality or location by instead describing the experiences of foreigners of diverse origins in rural and urban areas. The Sicilian case epitomizes what is one of the most significant developments in contemporary Europe: the recent transformation of the South from labor exporter to immigrant destination. Probing the material foundations of the contemporary world. Dirty Work's clear and compelling presentation of timely themes will appeal to a broad readership, including students, scholars, and the interested public. Book jacket.
