Book excerpt: A low-income Baltimore neighborhood is targeted for a controversial urban renewal project--an amusement park in the theme of Baltimore itself--that forces its residents to reckon with racism, displacement, and their futures. Peter Cryer is a queer teenager who fantasizes about leaving Baltimore and the instability of his home life while also seeking a place to belong. Ruth Anne, his prickly mother, is terrorized by her estranged husband and the indecision of what to do after the wrecking ball comes through her neighborhood. Thomas, a cleric and History teacher at Peter's school, questions his vocation in the face of the neighborhood's destruction. These three voices braid together a portrait of a neighborhood in flux, the role of community and violence in our time, and the struggles of a very real and oft misunderstood city.

Book New Visions of Collective Achievement

Download or read book New Visions of Collective Achievement written by Darrell Cleveland Hucks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Visions of Collective Achievement: The Cross-Generational Schooling Experiences of African American Males takes you on a journey into the lives of three families of African American males, each with an elementary aged boy. Bear witness to each boy’s observations and insights on his current schooling experiences, also hear what older males in his family have to say regarding their schooling experiences. Employing qualitative methodology to include their frequently unheard voices in educational research, this book endeavors to move toward correcting this oversight. New Visions of Collective Achievement graciously offers each of us, as stakeholders, a most precious gift: a theoretical and practical framework to effect real, meaningful, and long-lasting change if we are courageous enough to take heed. “This refreshingly clear and focused book presents a comprehensive discussion on the schooling experiences of African American males across generations. This invaluable resource should be required reading for all educators who work with this population to show the value of education in the African American community.” – Chance W. Lewis, Ph.D. Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor of Urban Education, UNC Charlotte “New Visions of Collective Achievement provides educators with an important insight into the ways Black males experience their education across time. Through groundbreaking research presented in the voices of three generations of Black males, this book commands attention and calls for multiple stakeholders in our schools and communities to work together to cultivate and advance the social and academic well-being of Black males.” – Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of English Education, Teachers College, Columbia University “New Visions encapsulates the spirit of African American males who are separated by generations, yet bound by a collective struggle against social injustice and a desire for success. Dr. Hucks invokes a reverence for historical oppression, an awareness of present day opportunities and barriers, and a visionary path for future generations of Black men.” – Ivory A. Toldson, Ph.D. Editor-in-Chief, The Journal of Negro Education; Associate Professor, Counseling Psychology Program, Howard University

Book Street Metal Detecting

  • Author : Rosie O'Kelly

  • Release : 2021-05-14
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 54 pages

Download or read book Street Metal Detecting written by Rosie O'Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the kick in the pants the hobby of metal detecting desperately needs today. It doesn't waste time teaching you about your detector. That's not its job. It's far beyond that. It's a plain written, straightforward, guide to rewarding metal detecting I wish existed when I first began detecting years ago! It's the perfect gift, not only for the new metal detectorist, but also the experienced metal detector who has grown bored and frustrated with the hobby. This work will drill down on where and HOW you should spend your time metal detecting today. Truth be told, metal detecting in 2021 is so much different than that of even ten years ago. The "battlefields" of today are barren. The parks and schoolyards are well and truly hunted out. And I am one of the rare few who dares to tell you this. Hunt these places today and you are wasting your time. There, I said it. Yet our hobby mopes along as if we are living back in the 50's, with loads of silver coins and jewelry, there for the taking. Sorry, but the Leave it to Beaver world that existed then ain't the hard scrabble world of today. Old school methods and approaches are outdated and don't give you any leg up, much less any useable knowledge, to undertake metal detecting in an exciting and profitable way today. You can, however, be an early pioneer and open your eyes to a novel way of metal detecting, one which can both help you start the hobby right, or reinvigorate a hobby which has become downright boring. Tired of digging clad coins, chewed up pennies, and cheap costume jewelry? So was I. Out of mad frustration one day, I tried something which blew me away and gave me instant rewards. Actually, the results of the first hunt plain stunned me! I have pursued this method of metal detecting now for a few years, refined it, and finally decided to share it with others. It is a truly a new frontier. It offers rewards enough to make me excited every time I go out.. I couldn't say that five years ago! What is this? Street metal detecting. This guide will tell you about my experiences and show you, with pictures, some of the incredible items I have recovered. More than this it will instill in your mind the foundations of why my approach to detecting today is so amazing. It also explains how you should do street detecting, step by step. This includes where to detect, the proper method, and example after example, all drawn from my experiences, impressing on you why this is the single best way to metal detect today. By the end, you will know what I tell you is grounded in reality and a philosophy. As a result you will adopt it and change your metal detecting forever. If I could drag you with me on one of my hunts, I doubt you would ever go back to a park or schoolyard. Yes, I feel that strongly about what's contained in this manual. Yes, you will read about some of the risks, but in this book I teach you how to mitigate them, and even use them to your advantage. Put another way, this is no pie in the sky read which promises much, and produces little. I am not a sales rep for detector manufacturers telling you to buy the latest most expensive detector if you want to succeed. In my approach, even the cheapest metal detector made will, when following my guidelines and suggestions, yield amazing finds. This hobby needs a "do over" and I think this book at least kick starts the process. Again, to me, if this guidebook was available to me as a raw beginner, I would have been eternally grateful. As for specifics, you will learn the right way to street detect as well as the perils of doing it wrong. I pull no punches here, but deal in plain logic and facts. It is a different world street detecting and there are some risks. But with any worthwhile undertaking, increased risk is usually commensurate with greater rewards. This is 2021, folks. The world has changed but metal detecting has neither recognized, nor has it adapted to, the realities of the challenges facing the hobby today.

Book Metal Detecting Hidden Places

Download or read book Metal Detecting Hidden Places written by Rob Mustin and published by Rob Mustin. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Detecting is Easy Finding New Places that are Old & Forgotten is the Tricky Part… If we all had a Treasure Map then this would be too easy and there would be no buried Treasure left to go out and find. My guide will help you create your own real treasure map. I quickly learned about 6 months after I started metal detecting that I need to do something different. I have hunted the beaches, hunted all kinds of parks and every school yard within 30 miles, I want to hunt something different. I wanted to hunt something really old; I want to hunt somewhere that would give me the chance to find something worth bragging about on all the Social Media outlets. I wanted to find relics that have a story. I was so tired of reading and seeing all the pictures on Facebook and other social media outlets about these great finds from the 1800’s or even older, why can’t I dig up something like what other people seem to be finding? So I started researching about old places and the history right here in my own zip code, I was shocked at what I was quickly learning about my own city. I couldn't believe how much history had taken place within a few miles from my own front porch. Even though I grew up here, I most have forgotten about all the land marks that I have passed by over the last 40 years, tunnel vision as most would call it. So after finding all kinds of new hunting places, I did what anyone else would do these days, I created a group page on Facebook and I started posting information and the pictures of all the new locations I had found to go out and hunt. Next thing I know, I have over 600 followers. Then people started posting request for me to help find Old & Forgotten places where they lived. I started posting those new places for them to go out and hunt. Then I started to get even more request on a daily basis. A lot of the new requests were coming in as a private message asking me if I “would not post the info I had found publicly”. We Treasure Hunters DO NOT like to share information about a great location; hmmmm seems when we do share a location, everyone shows up with a Metal Detector looking for buried Treasure. After getting more request then I could get to on a daily bases, someone had asked me if I had an eBook or any kind of Instructable guide, which could show them how to Research and Locate Old and Forgotten Places. What a Great Idea… So here is my complete step by step guide on how to research online, using several FREE interactive tools and websites available to anyone. I would also like to add, there is nothing to sign up for or purchase with the websites and online resources I use. By following my Guide, I explain in great detail how to use each of these FREE tools available. When you use these tools in conjunction with each other, you will see that you have a complete arsenal of information that will help anyone locate new hunting places quickly. Let the hunt begin…

Book excerpt: The evil in East Salem is no longer content to hide in the shadows. The stakes—and the darkness—are rising. Dani Harris thought there wasn’t much left that could surprise her after serving as a forensic psychiatrist in East Salem. And Tommy Gunderson has faced few challenges in his life that he couldn’t overcome by either physical strength or his celebrity status. But as they race to uncover what’s really happening behind the high walls of St. Adrian’s Academy, it becomes clear that supernatural forces have been at work here for generations. And now their focus is on making sure Dani and Tommy don’t interfere. When the unseen becomes seen, faith is the only weapon strong enough to fight in a battle involving not just murder and betrayal—but angels and demons. “Wiehl’s latest is a truly creepy story with supernatural undertones that seem eerily real.” -Romantic Times review of Waking Hours
